A Study on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Vapor Grown Carbon Nanofibers-Reinforced Epoxy Matrix Composites (기상성장 탄소나노섬유/에폭시 복합재료의 열적 및 기계적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this work, the thermal and mechanical properties of vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs)-reinforced difunctional epoxy (EP) composites were investigated in the presence of the 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and $2wt\%$ VGCNFs. The thermal properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were studied by thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The mechanical properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were also examined by universal testing machine (UTM), falling impact test, and the friction and wear tests. From experimental results, the thermal and mechanical properties of the VGCNFs/EP composites were improved with increasing the VGCNFs contents. This was due to the increase of crosslinking structure of the composites, resulting in improving the mechanical interlockings between VGCNFs and epoxy resins in the present composite system.

Effect of sliding velocity on the wear and friction characteristics of a carbon fiber composites (탄소 섬유 복합재의 마찰 및 마모 특성에 미치는 속도 효과)

  • This paper presents an experimental study of friction and wear properties of a unidirectional oriented continuous crbon-fiber reinforced epoxy composite at the ambient temperature. Friction and wear experiments were conducted in the three principal sliding direction of the fiber orientation in the composite were selected against the stainless steel counterpart specularly processed were using a pin -on-disc apparatus. Friction coefficient and specific wear rate at various normal loads and sliding velocities wear determined. When sliding took place against smooth and hard counterpart, the hightest were resistance and the lowest friction coefficient were observed in the anti-parallel direction. The wear track of the worn specimens was examined with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) to observe the damaged fibers on the surface. In addition, SEM observations of the worn surfaces allowed to identify the involved different wear mechanisms.

  • Electrically conductive carbon fiber/high density polyethylene (CF/HDPE) composite films were fabricated by new method, so called electron-ion technology (EIT) and the effects of CF epoxy sizing on the volumetric resistivity. tensile strength and interphase properties of the films were investigated. While epoxy sizing increased conductivity of composite films resulting from enhanced tunneling effect it reduced interphase adhesion between CF and HDPE because polar epoxy sizing and nonpolar HDPE are incompatible. Consequently epoxy sized CF(CF(S)) caused significant reduction in the volumetric resisitivity and tensile strength of composite films when compared with unsized CF(CF(U)). Epoxy sizing reduced nucleating efficiency of CF(S), therefore CF(S)/HDPE composite films showed nonuniform transcrystalline layer when compared with CF(U)/HDPE composite films.

Effect of Diffusion on the Interfacial Adhesion of Poly(hydroxy ether) Coated Caron Fibers (계면확산에 의한 Poly(hydroxy ether) 코팅된 탄소섬유의 계면접착력 변화 연구)

  • Carbon fibers were coated with carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE, water dispersed), water soluble polymers poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine)(PHEA) or water insoluble poly(hydroxy ether)(PHE). Interfacial shear strength of polymer coated carbon fibers was measured by micro-droplet tests with vinyl ester resin, and approximately 30 samples were tested. The interfacial adhesion of poly-mers to carbon fibers was also evaluated, and diffusion behavior of polymer films in vinyl ester resin was investigated. The carbon fibers after testing and diffusion samples were analysed by SEM in order to understand adhesion mechanism. Interfacial shear strength of carbon fibers was enhanced by the coating of PHE and C-PHE which have good or marginal solubility in vinyl ester resin, respectively, but not by the coating of PHEA possibly due to the poor solubility in vinyl ester resin.

  • 세계적으로 석유 기반 자원의 고갈에 따른 부족, 기후변화협약 및 환경규제 강화에 의해 세계적으로 바이오소재를 이용하고자 하는 연구와 더불어 유리강화복합재료의 대체물질로 적합한 천연섬유를 보강재로 사용하는 바이오복합재료의 연구 또한 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 최근 새로운 신재생에너지원으로 각광 받고 있는 바이오에너지 중 해조류는 가장 자연친화적이고 생산력이 뛰어난 바이오매스로 알려져 있다. 해조류는 바닷물 속에 녹아 있는 탄소를 흡수할 뿐만 아니라 광합성을 통해서도 탄소를 흡수하면서 성장하기 때문에 탄소흡수원의 역할을 하게 되며, 해조류 바이오에너지를 생산할 경우 화석연료를 대체하여 지구온난화의 주범인 온실가스를 감축하는 기능을 한다. 본 연구에서는 해조류를 이용한 바이오에너지 생산 공정에서 2차적으로 발생하는 부산물을 보강재로 사용한 바이오복합재료의 제조와 제조된 바이오복합재료의 열적 특성 및 동역학적 특성을 분석하였다. 해조류 부산물의 화학적 전처리에 따른 Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) 분석 결과로 cellulose 함량이 가장 높고 불순물이 적은 황산 처리한 파래를 이용해 파래/Polypropylene(PP) 바이오복합재료를 다양한 보강비율 (20-50wt%)로 압축성형 하였다. 파래/PP 바이오복합재료의 저장탄성률은 파래 함량이 40wt%일 때 4.0 Gpa으로 최대값을 보였으며 이는 PP 매트릭스와 비교했을 때 약 8.1% 향상된 결과이다. 파래/PP 바이오보합재료의 열팽창 특성은 파래 함량이 증가함에 따라 열팽창계수가 낮아지는 경향으로 50wt%일 때 가장 낮은 값을 나타내었으며 이는 PP 매트릭스와 비교했을 때 약 56% 향상된 결과이다. 따라서 비생분해성 고분자에 새로운 신재생 바이오매스인 해조류를 보강재로 사용하여 열적 특성 및 동역학적 특성이 향상된 친환경적인 바이오복합재료의 제조 가능성을 확인하였다.

  • Carbon particle based nanocomposites have been studied. Nanocomposites containing CNT and graphite particles were manipulated by aligning the micro/nano-size particles with electric field. Electric field is applied to the suspension of epoxy matrix and particulate inclusions in order to align them along the direction of the electric field. Particles aligned in a uniform direction act as a fiber in a CFRP composite. The mechanical strength and physical characteristics highly depend on particles' distribution pattern and amount. In this study, the characteristics of radioactive barrier are emphasized, which has been rarely discussed in the literature. A number of sample coupons were tested to verify their performance. The procedure of manufacturing nanocomposites by means of extremely small size particle alignment is presented in sequence. Several physical and structural performances of composites containing aligned and randomly distributed particles were compared. The results show particle alignment is very effective to enhance directional strength and radioactive barrier performance.

  • 여러가지 두꺼운 복합재료 구조물은 3차원 압축 부하 상태에 노출되는 경우가 발생한다. 이런 경우에 있어 서의 복합재료 압축 강도는 압축 평균 응력을 이용하면 예측이 가능할지도 모른다. 이번 연구 에서는 압축 평균 응력을 이용하여 탄소섬유 강화 복합재료들의 압축 강도를 예측하는 모델을 개발 하고자 한다. 이 모델은 압축강도에 영향을 주는 요소, 초기 misalignment를 고려하였고, 탄소섬유와 수지사이에 접합강도가 임계값을 초과할때 복합재료의 파괴가 일어난다고 가정한다. 또 여라가지 문헌들을 통하여 유압이 접합강도에 미치는 점들을 보여준다. 본 모델을 이용한 예측값들은 가해지는 유압에 따라 증가되며, 실험값들과 비교 분석될 것이다.

  • Liquid silicon infiltration, which is one of the methods of producing fiber reinforced ceramic composites, has several advantages such as low fabrication cost and good shape formability. In order to confirm LSI process feasibility of SiC fiber, $SiC_f/SiC$ composites were fabricated using three types of SiC fibers (Tyranno SA, LoxM, Tyranno S) which have different crystallinity and oxygen content. Composites that were fabricated with LSI process were well densified by less than 2% of porosity, but showed an obvious difference in 3-point bending strength according to crystallinity and oxygen content. When composites in LSI process was exposed to a high temperature, crystallization and micro structural changes were occurred in amorphous SiOC phase in SiC fiber. Fiber shrinkage also observed during LSI process that caused from reaction in fiber and between fiber and matrix. These were confirmed with changes of process temperature by SEM, XRD and TEM analysis.

Effects of Electrochemical Oxidation of Carbon Fibers on Mechanical Interfacial Properties of Carbon Fibers-reinforced Polarized-Polypropylene Matrix Composites (전기화학적 산화처리가 탄소섬유/극성화된 폴리프로필렌 복합재의 기계적 계면 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this work, the effects of electrochemical oxidation of carbon fiber surfaces on mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced polarized-polypropylene matrix composites were studied with various current densities during the treatments. Surface properties of the fibers before and after treatments were observed by SEM, AFM, XPS, and contact angle measurements. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were measured in terms of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results it was found that $O_{1s}$ peaks of the fiber surfaces were strengthened after electrochemical oxidation which led to the enhancement of surface free energy of the fiber, resulting in good mechanical performance of the composites. It can be concluded that electrochemical oxidation of the carbon fiber surfaces can control the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and polarized-polypropylene in this composites system.

  • 고온, 고압의 추진제 연소가스로부터 노즐 구조물을 보호하기 위해 사용되는 열 차폐용 삭마성 내열재료(ablative material)의 종류와 재료선정을 위한 시험방법, 설계 및 제작기법, 성능평가 기준 등에 관한 연구동향을 검토하고 본 연구팀의 연구결과를 제시하였습니다 고체추진제 연소 환경하에서의 노즐 보호재료로서는 고분자계 삭마성 내열재가 주로 사용되는데, 이 ablative material에는 여러 종류가 있으나 높은 heat flux와 빠른 mass flow에 대한 내열을 위해서는 페놀, 폴리이미드 등 열경화성 수지인 charring material이 모재로 주로 사용되며 강도향상을 위해서 탄소, 실리카, 석면, 유리등의 강화섬유가 보강재로 사용됩니다 현재는 모재로서 고분자계 수지외에도 세라믹과 같은 무기재료, 금속재료등과 강화섬유를 조합하여 내열성과 강도가 향상된 재료를 개발하는 연구도 진행되고 있습니다
