Facture Prediction in SiC Fiber Reinforced $Si_3N_4$ Matrix Composites from Electrical Resistivity Measurements (전기저항측정에 의한 SiC섬유강화 $Si_3N_4$기 복합재료의 파괴예측)

  • SiC fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ matrix composites combined with electrical conductive phases of carbon fiber and WC powder fabricated by hot pressing at 1773K. The ability to predict fracture in the ceramic matrix composites was evaluated by measuring simultaneous load-deflection and electrical resistanc difference-deflection curves in four point bending tests. The changes in electrical resistance differences closely corresponded to the fracture behavior of the composites. Different electrical conductive phases are suited to predicting different stages and rates of fracture. These obsevations how that it is possible to perform "in situ" fracture detection in ceramic composites.

  • The composites composed of conducting polymer (MEH-PPV), CdTe nanoparticles, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were spectroscopically and electrically characterized in their thin films. The composite films were prepared by spray coating. These composites were prepared from the mixture solution of MEH-PPV and CdTe-embedded MWNTs, in which CdTe nanoparticles were electrostatically bound to MWNTs. UV/vis and PL spectra were analyzed to investigate the optical absorbance and emission of the composite films. In addition, their structural, electrochemical, and electrical properties were studied by transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and I-V measurement.

Effect of Carbon Content on the Shape of WC Grains during Liquid Phase Sintering of WC-Co Hard Metals (WC-Co 초경합금의 액상소결시 WC 입자형상에 미치는 탄소량의 영향)

  • The effect of carbon content on the shape of WC grains dispersed in the Co-rich matrix during liquid phase sintering of WC-35%Co hard metals has been determined. The shape of WC grains was observed using SEM stereography after removing cobalt matrix with boiling hydrochloric acid solution. The WC grains changed from hexagonal to trigonal prism as the carbon content increased in the two-phase region of(WC + $\beta$ - Co), while the morphology of WC grains changed from trigonal to hexagonal shape as the carbon content decreased. The morphology of WC grains changes reversibly along with carbon loss or carbon pick-up. Morphology change of WC grains is attributed to crystal structure of WC, which has an asymmetric array of carbon atoms. There are two types of prismatic planes having different numbers of broken W-C bonds in WC grains. It is scrutinized that as the carbon content increases, the high energy prism planes grow fast and the crystals change from hexagonal to trigonal shape. On the other hand, when the carbon content decreases, the high energy prism planes are dissolved accompanying split of (100) plane into (101) and (101) planes.

  • Extraction of manganese was investigated with nitric acid from the dust which was generated in the AOD process producing a medium-low carbon ferromanganese from a high carbon ferromanganese. Content of manganese oxide in the dust was about 90%, and phase of it was confirmed as $Mn_3O_4$, The $Mn_3O_4$ particles was agglomerated as spherical shape, and had a lot of pore and crack inside. Maximum recovery of Mn from the sample in the leaching step was about 67% and residue was the amorphous $MnO_2$. The extraction of Mn increased with increasing temperature, but decreased in proportion to concentration of nitric acid. The extraction rate was in good agreement with the pore diffusion model.

A Study on Thermal Characteristic Carbon and other Elements in Suspended Particulates (대기 입자상물질중 탄소(C)등의 열적특성에 관한 조사연구)

  • An analytical method for particulate carbon and other elements by using elemental analyzer was investigated. Carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen was determined as CO$_{2}$, H$_{2}$, and N$_{2}$, respectively. Organic was determined after scparation from elemental carbon(Cae) by volatilization and thermal decomposition in a heated helium flow. With organic materials examined in this reprot, more than 90% of carbon was detected as above 600$^{\circ}$C. But it is considered that a few percents of some compounds were charred above 550$^{\circ}$C. A small amount of Cae was oxidized in the inert atmosphere above 850$^{\circ}$C, but the reason was not explained clearly. Based on the thermal chracteristics of Cao it was found that the optimum temperature of heating in the helium flow of an elemental analyzer for Cao analysis is 630$^{\circ}$C. Carbon in a sample after removing Cao was assumed as Cae and the gramatom ratio of hydrogen to carbon in the sample was 0.4 and less. Rescovery of nitrogen derived from some ammonium salts and nitrates was 100% by two-step measurement with elemental analyzer. By the analytical method investigated in this report, carbon and other elements in suspended particulates(S.P) collected at an urban area in Seoul were measured. There was a good correlation between total nitrogen in SP measured by elemental analyzer and nitrogen estimated form ammonium ions and nitrate ions in SP. The nitrogen from these ions accounts for 80% of the total nitrogen. It is further suggested that the residue(20%) of the total nitrogen is attributed to the other nitrogeneous compounds.

  • Although combustion is essential in most energy generation processes, it is one of the major causes of air pollution. Circle fin exhaust pipes were designed to study the effect of cooling the recirculated exhaust gases (EGR) of Diesel engines on the chemical composition of the exhaust gases and the reduction in the percentages of pollutant emissions. The designs adopted in this study were exhaust pipes with solid and hollow fins around them direct surface force measurement in water using a nano size colloidal probe Technique The direct force measurement between colloidal surfaces has been an essential topic in both theories and applications of surface chemistry. As particle size is decreased from micron size down to true Carbon nano Colloid size (<10nm), surface forces are increasingly important. Nanoparticles at close proximity or high solids loading are expected to show a different behavior than what can be estimated from continuum and mean field theories. This paper use Water and CNC fluid at normal cooling system of EGR. Experimental result showed all good agreement at Re=$2.54{\times}10^{4}$.

  • The increasing numbers of automobiles keep causing air-pollution problems worse than ever. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modern technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. This research emphasized on the development of Continuously Regenerating DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technology because of its superior comparability and high applicability. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a Continuously Regenerating DPF ona displacement 7,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on engine performance and characteristics on exhaust emissions with the application of a Continuously Regenerating DPF in a heavy-duty diesel vehicle.

  • 발열체는 전기 에너지를 열 에너지로 변환시키는 전기 저항체인데, Ni-Cr계 합금이 발열 가능 온도가 범위가 크고 열 효율 및 내 산화성, 내 부식성이 우수하여 발열체로 많이 사용되고 있다. 그리고 기존의 선형 발열체의 효율성을 개선한 면상 발열체가 개발되었고, 최근 나노 기술의 발달로 나노크기의 ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) 입자나 탄소나노튜브가 코팅된 형태의 투명 면상 발열체가 개발되어 주목을 받고 있다. 투명 면상 발열체는 발열체의 형태를 거시적으로 확인할 수 없기 때문에 자동차의 전면 유리 히터 및 건축용 기능성 창호 등의 심미적 효과를 요구하는 제품에 사용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 PVP(Poly vinyl Pirrolidone)을 이용하여 Ni-Cr Nanofiber 제조를 위한 효율적인 전기 방사 조건을 도출한다. PVP 질량에 따라서 Ethanol과 Methanol, 물을 이용하여 viscosity와 ion conduciviy를 조절하였고, 전기방사 조건으로 bead를 최소화 하는 나노섬유를 얻었다. 이어서 Ni-Cr/PVP 용액은 Metal Precursor wt.% 조절 및 방사조건으로 100~300nm의 직경을 가진 나노 섬유를 얻을 수 있었다. 산화/환원 열처리 후 PVP와 Oxide가 제거된 Ni-Cr nanofiber를 합성하였다. Nanofiber 형상은 FE-SEM으로 측정하였으며, XRD, FT-IR 분석을 통해 제작된 나노 섬유의 구조적 특성을 확인하였다.

Literature Review of Clinical Usefulness of Heavy Ion Particle as an New Advanced Cancer Therapy (첨단 암 치료로서 중입자치료의 임상적 유용성에 대한 고찰)

  • Heavy ion particle, represented carbon ion, radiotherapy is currently most advanced radiation therapy technique. Conventional radiation therapy has made remarkable changes over a relatively short period of time and leading various developments such as intensity modulated radiation therapy, 4D radiation therapy, image guided radiation therapy, and high precisional therapy. However, the biological and physical superiority of particle radiation, represented by Bragg peak, can give the maximum dose to tumor and minimal dose to surrounding normal tissues in the treatment of cancers in various areas surrounded by radiation-sensitive normal tissues. However, despite these advantages, there are some limitations and factors to consider. First, there is not enough evidence, such as large-scale randomized, prospective phase III trials, for the clinical application. Secondly, additional studies are needed to establish a very limited number of treatment facilities, uncertainty about the demand for heavy particle treatment, parallel with convetional radiotherapy or indications. In addition, Bragg peak of the heavy particles can greatly reduce the dose to the normal tissues front and behind the tumor compared to the photon or protons. High precision and accuracy are needed for treatment planning and treatment, especially for lungs or livers with large respiratory movements. Currently, the introduction of the heavy particle therapy device is in progress, and therefore, it is expected that more research will be active.

Toxic air pollutants and motor vehicle emissions (독성대기오염물질과 자동차공해)

  • 현재 주요 가스상물질은 미국의 경우 규제전보다 일산화탄소가 96%, 탄화수소 96%, 질소산화물 76%가 개선되어 어느정도 안정단계에 들어 갔다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나, 입자상물질규제는 디이 젤자동차의 증가와 더불어 1986-1994기간동안 대폭적으로 강화되고 있다. 그러나 자동차 배출 가스중에는 수백가지의 화학물질이 존재하고 인체에 유독한 물질은 규제물질외에도 엄청나게 많다. 따라서 1977년 8월에 개정된 미국의 대기정정법(CAA, clean air act)에는 "신규 제작자동 차나 엔진에 사용되는 어떠한 방지장치, 시스템 또는 부품도 공중보건, 복지 및 안전에 부당한 위험을 일으키거나 일으키는 요인이 될 수 없다"(참조, CAA 202 (a) 및 CFR 86.084-5)고 규 정하고 있다. 이에 따라 미국환경청에서는 회람 등을 통하여 가능한 독성물질에 대하여 경우에 따라 측정할 것을 요구하고 있다. 국내 환경보전법에도 자동차연료첨가제 사용할 때 현저하게 유해한 물질이 배출된다고 인정하는 때에는 그 사용을 규제할 수 있게 되어있고 새로 제정될 자동차 배출가스 시험검사방법 및 절차에 관한 규정에 이에 관한 사항을 추가할 움직임이 있다. 물론 미규제물질의 규제하는 인체에 대한 피해정도나 측정방법 등의 여러 가지 문제가 수반되나 장기적인 국민보건과 환경보전 측면에서 신중하게 다루어져야 되리라 봐서 여러 가지 오염물질의 현황이나 분석방법 등에 대하여 기술코자 한다.여 기술코자 한다.
