  • Recently, the rational methods of pavement design and analysis using the resilient modulus, MR, as fundamental input material property have been increasingly adopted in major advanced countries. Since the development of 1986 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, many researches concerning the resilient characteristics of various pavement materials as well . as development of reliable testing methods have been actively performed. Anticipating the use of Mn-based pavement design and analysis such as resilient characteristics and Mn - CBR relat - ionship of domestic subgrade soils were performed including development of a standard MR test procedure suitable for subgrade soils in our country.

  • Polyolefin block copolymer has been taking a great deal of attention due to their great potential in polymer industry since a new metallocene catalytic method for producing polyolefin block copolymer was developed by Dow Chemicals. However, so far, there was no systematic study of olefin block copolymer. In this review, Linear polyolefin block copolymers, containing semicrystalline poly (ethylene) (E) blocks and a rubbery block as a thermoplastic elastomer, were investigated in the viewpoint of microphase separation mode, microstructure, deformation behavior, and molecular architecture.

  • Analysis of correlation and behavior characteristics at elastic wave velocity have studied on Korean rock data after checking population size and Chi-square method. Behavior characteristics are quite different from each rock and mechanical parameters at elastic wave velocity. This study shows it is necessary to analize correlation to rock behavior characteristics for correct answer from natural rock.

  • Domestic or international existing researches regarding rail damage factors are focused on laying, vehicle conditions, driving speed and driving habits and overlook characteristics of track structure (elasticity, maintenance etc). Also in ballast track, as there is no special lateral spring stiffness of track also called as ballast lateral resistance in concrete track, generally, existing study shows concrete track has 2 time shorter life cycle for rail replacement than ballast track due to abrasion. As a result of domestic concrete track design and operation performance review, concrete track elasticity is lower than track elasticity of ballast track resulting higher damage on rail and tracks. Generally, concrete track has advantage in track elasticity adjustment than ballast track and in case of Europe, in concrete track design, it is recommended to have same or higher performance range of vertical elastic stiffness of ballast track but domestically or internationally review on lateral spring stiffness of track is very minimal. Therefore, through analysis of service line track on site measurement and analysis on performance of maintenance, in this research, dynamic characteristic behaviors of commonly used ballast and concrete track are studied to infer elasticity of service line track and experimentally prove effects of track lateral spring stiffness that influence curved rail damage as well as correlation between track elasticity by track system and rail damage to propose importance of appropriate elastic stiffness level for concrete and ballast track.

  • Choosing a seismic source and geophone type including a coupling method can be the most important factor in shallow seismic surveys. We studied the characteristics of seismic signals by analyzing 6 different seismic data sets that collected from several sources and geophone conditions. Geophones attached to weight plate (1.8 kg) can be easily and economically installed on the paved road where geophones with spikes would cause the coupling problem. In addition, experiments in this study revealed that a small handy hammer can be used as a seismic source by striking the paved road to generate the seismic signals within 200 ms two-way travel time. Attaching weight plates to geophones may change the geophone response curve which generally depends on the geophone mass, but the change seems not to give significant differences in the first arrival of refracted wave and in the pattern of reflection events. Consequently, using weight plates on paved roads can be an efficient and cost-saving method in the near-surface high-resolution seismic surveys.

  • Multicomponent seismic data including both P- and PS-waves have advantages in discriminating the type of pore fluid, characterizing the lithologic attributes and producing the high resolution image. However, multicomponent seismic data recorded at the vertical and horizontal component receivers contain both P- and PS-waves which have different features, simultaneously. Therefore, the wavefield separation of P- and PS-waves as a preprocessing is inevitable in order to use the multicomponent seismic data successfully. In this study, we analyzed the previous study of the wavefield separation method suggested by Jeong and Byun in 2011, where the approximated reflection angle calculated only from one refernce depth is used in rotation transform, and showed its limitation for seismic data containing various reflected events from the multi-layered structure. In order to overcome its limitation, we suggested a new effective wavefield separation method of P- and PS-waves. In new method, we calculate the reflection angles with various reference depths and apply rotation transforms to the data with those reflection angles. Then we stack all results to obtain the final separated data. To verify our new method, we applied it to the synthetic data sets from a multi-layered model, a fault model, and the Marmousi-2 model. The results showed that the proposed method separated successfully P- and PS-reflection events from the multicomponent data from mild dipping layered model as long as the dip is not too steep.

  • Abstract: Surface topography has a significant influence on seismic wave propagation in a reflection seismic exploration. Effects of surface topography on two-dimensional elastic wave propagation are investigated through modeling using a weighted-averaging (WA) finite-element method (FEM), which is computationally more efficient than conventional FEM. Effects of air layer on wave propagation are also investigated using flat surface models with and without air. To validate our scheme in modeling including topography, we compare WA FEM results for irregular topographic models against those derived from conventional FEM using one set of rectangular elements. For the irregular surface topography models, elastic wave propagation is simulated to show that breaks in slope act as a new source for diffracted waves, and that Rayleigh waves are more seriously distorted by surface topography than P-waves.
