This paper presents the closing analysis of a symmetric steel cable-stayed bridge erected by a free cantilever method. Two independent structural systems are formed before the closing procedure of a bridge is performed, and thus the compatibility conditions for vertical displacement and rotational angle are not satisfied at the closing section without the application of proper sectional forces. Since, however, it is usually impossible to apply sectional forces at the closing section, the compatibility conditions should be satisfied by proper external forces that can be actually applicable to a bridge. Unstrained lengths of selected cables and the pull-up force of a derrick crane are adjusted to satisfy nonlinear compatibility conditions, which are solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Cable members are modeled by the elastic catenary cable elements, and towers and main girders are discretized by linear 3-D frame elements. The sensitivities of displacement with respect to the unstrained lengths of selected cables and the pull-up force of the derrick crane are evaluated by the direct differentiation of the equilibrium equation. A Monte-Carlo simulation approach is proposed to estimate expected construction errors for a given confidence level. The proposed method is applied to the second Jindo Grand Bridge to demonstrate its validity and effectiveness.

Geometrical non-linearity due to the flexibility of cables must be considered efficiently in the dynamic analysis of cable structures. In this paper, formulation of tangent stiffness matrix of elastic catenary cable is derived by using relative nodal displacements, self-weight and unstressed cable length. Free vibration analysis of simply supported cable using elastic catenary cable elements is conducted and compared with that using truss elements. The result shows that elastic catenary cable elements are more compatible than truss elements in the case of analysis of cable structures. Furthermore, the characteristic of dynamic behaviors of cable structures by temporary unstability phenomenon is confirmed.

Finite element analyses are conducted with stochastic elastic moduli when truss structures are subjected to static loads of a deterministic nature. Stochastic stiffness matrix is derived from stochastic shape functions and numerical analyses are performed within the framework of the Monte Carlo method. Analysis methods are verified for the space truss and applied to cable stayed bridge for determining the cable force.

In this paper, a non-linear finite element formulation for the spatial cable-net structures is simulated and using this formulation, the characteristics of structural behaviors for the elastic catenary cable are examined In the simulating procedure for the elastic catenary cable, nodal forces and tangential stiffness matrices are derived using catenary parameters of the exact solutions by a governing differential equation of catenary cable, cable self-weights and unstressed cable length. Dynamic Relaxation Method that considers kinetic damping is used for the structure analysis and Newton Raphson Method is used to verify the accuracy of solutions. In the analysis of two dimensional cable, the results obtain from the elastic catenary elements are shown more accurate than does of truss elements and in the case of spatial cable-net structures, Dynamic Relaxation Method is more stable to be converged than Newton Raphson Method.

In the study, we analyzed the collision characteristics of a so-called arch-type submarine cable protector by considering the changes in drop heights of a stock anchor and material models for concrete and steel reinforcing bars. We considered plastic kinematics model and Johnson-Holmquist Concrete model for the concrete and linear elastic model and plastic kinematics model for the reinforcing bars. The drop heights of 2-ton stock anchor were selected as 3, 5, and 8.83m, respectively. ANSYS, a finite element analysis program, was used for the collision analysis. To save computational time, we converted those drop heights into initial velocities by the principle of energy conservation. From the sensitivity of the material models on the drop height changes, it is shown that the collision response of the reinforcing bars is sensitive firstly on the steel models and secondly on the concrete models, while the collision response of the concrete is sensitive only on the concrete models.
Wind tunnel test results and their interpretations focused on the behavior of girder, which were performed to study the aerodynamic stability of a self-anchored suspension bridge with lateral sag of main cable, are presented in this paper The shape of the girder which has the best aerodynamic stability was selected based on the section model test under uniform and turbulent flow conditions. Good performance of the selected section was confirmed in the full bridge model test. Measured flutter derivatives are presented for further study. Buffeting response was investigated to check the fatigue problem and serviceability of the bridge but it was found to be acceptable from the engineering point of view. Even though the drag coefficient of the girder had high value, the amplitude of the lateral vibration was found to be very low. This may be due to the restraint provided by the lateral sag of the cables.

The girders of cable stayed bridge are subjected to not only the bending moments but also additional compressive axial forces due to the horizontal components of cable forces. Because of these axial forces, the stiffness of girder can be decreased, and this problem should be considered especially for under-construction model rather than the full model. Korean domestic design specification suggests the linear elastic eigen value analysis for the stability problem of cable stayed bridges. However, this method cannot be applied to the under construction model because various geometric nonlinear characteristics cannot be considered. Therefore, in this study, 3 models which are assumed to be constructed by balanced cantilever will be considered experimentally and analytically to analyze the behavior of steel cable stayed bridges.

Mobile harbor is characterized by the lightweight compact structure when compared to the conventional above-ground port container crane. A new concept RORI crane system, which was devised for mobile harbor to satisfy the compactness and light weightness, not only can load/unload containers with high speed on sea but can be completely folded at maneuvering mode. This study is concerned with the tip deflection of the horizontal boom of mobile harbor at container loading operation. Both the theoretical method utilizing the Castigliano's theorem and the numerical approach by finite element method are employed, and the reliability of the latter approach is verified through the comparison with the theoretical results. And then, the effect of the initial cable tension on the tip deflection is parametrically examined by the finite element analysis.
Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is an optimization process of fitting observed and modeled data to reconstruct high-resolution subsurface physical models. In acoustic FWI (AFWI), pressure data acquired using a marine streamer has mainly been used to reconstruct the subsurface P-wave velocity models. With recent advances in marine seismic-acquisition techniques, acquiring multi-component data in marine environments have become increasingly common. Thus, AFWI strategies must be developed to effectively use marine multi-component data. Herein, we proposed an AFWI strategy using horizontal and vertical particle-acceleration data. By analyzing the modeled acoustic data and conducting sensitivity kernel analysis, we first investigated the characteristics of each data component using AFWI. Common-shot gathers show that direct, diving, and reflection waves appearing in the pressure data are separated in each component of the particle-acceleration data. Sensitivity kernel analyses show that the horizontal particle-acceleration wavefields typically contribute to the recovery of the long-wavelength structures in the shallow part of the model, and the vertical particle-acceleration wavefields are generally required to reconstruct long- and short-wavelength structures in the deep parts and over the whole area of a given model. Finally, we present a sequential-inversion strategy for using the particle-acceleration wavefields. We believe that this approach can be used to reconstruct a reasonable P-wave velocity model, even when the pressure data is not available.
