  • A numerical analysis of cable-stayed bridge is conducted to determine optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity which represents the boundary condition between the tower and main girder. The effect of longitudinal modulus of elasticity is investigated for different loading condition (live load, wind load, seismic load), respectively. There are significant changes in the member forces as variations of longitudinal modulus of elasticity, such as, $k_h$=e=100tonf/m/bearing (live load), $k_h$=e=1000tonf/m/bearing (seismic load), However, the wind loads do not affect member forces. The optimum longitudinal modulus of elasticity is determined from considering minimum member forces in the numerical analysis results.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross-sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by D. H. Kim in 1974. This method has been developed for two-dimensional problems including the laminated composite plates and was proved to be very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the building slabs with passive and active control devices is presented. Finite difference method is used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of compressive tapered members resting on elastic foundation using the Differential Quadrature Method. Based on the differential equation subjected to the boundary conditions, adopted from the open literature, which governs the free vibrations of such member, this equation is applied to the Differential Quadrature Method. For computing natural frequencies, the numerical procedures are developed by QR Algorithm, in which the Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto method is used for choosing the grid points. The numerical methods developed herein for computing natural frequencies are programmed in FORTRAN code, and all solutions obtained in this study are quite agreed with those in the open literature.

  • The extended framework of Hamilton's principle provides a new rigorous weak variational formalism for a broad range of initial boundary value problems in mathematical physics and mechanics in terms of mixed formulation. Based upon such framework, a new variational numerical method of linear elasticity is provided for the classical single-degree-of-freedom dynamical systems. For the undamped system, the algorithm is symplectic with respect to the time step. For the damped system, it is shown to be accurate with good convergence characteristics.

  • The finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis are both well established numerical techniques for determination of stress and displacement distributions at underground excavation. The finite element method presents antithetical advantages and limitations. Complex constitutive behaviour may be modelled, at the expense of numerical efficiency and, for infinite domain, inadequate representation of remote bounadry conditions. The inherent advantages of the boundary element method are the ease with which infinite domain problems may be analysed, and the efficiency of analysis typically associated with a boundary value solution procedure. Application of the method is limited by the requirements linear constitutive behaviour for the medium. A combined of the finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis is shown to preserve the advantages of each procedure, and, eliminates their individual disadvantages. Procedures employed in this papers described combined FEBEM algorithm. Solutions of underground excavation verifying the performance of combined FEBEM code are compared with theoretical solution, boundary element solution and finite element solution.

  • Turbulent boundary layer over an underwater vehicle is formed when it moves underwater and wall pressure fluctuation within the turbulent boundary layer generates flow-induced noise by exciting the elastic hull of the underwater vehicle. One of the methods to reduce this flow noise is to attach a compliant layer on the surface of the vehicle. In order to observe the possibility of noise reduction in the water when the compliant layer treatments are applied on the surface, three types of specimens those are a bare steel plate, a steel plate coated with neoprene and a steel plate with polyurethane coating material are tested at various flow speeds in a low noise cavitation tunnel. This paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of wall pressure fluctuations which is a main source of flow noise, within the turbulent boundary layer on three specimens. Its results could be shown that about 10dB reduction of wall fluctuation pressure at high frequencies was achieved due to the dissipation of turbulent energy by the compliant coating while it makes the turbulent boundary layer thicker and changes the behavior of turbulent flow in the layer.

  • Delamination reduces an elastic buckling load of the laminated composite structures and lead to global structural failure at loads below the design level. Therefore, the problem of the delamination buckling of laminated composite structures has generated significant research interest and has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations. However, questions still remain regarding a complete understanding and details of the phenomena involved. In this paper an efficient finite element model is presented for analyzing the elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with square embedded delamination using a solid element based on a three-dimensional theory. The solid finite element, named by EAS-SOLID8, based on an enhanced assumed strain method is developed. The study for elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with embedded square delaminations are focused on various parameters, such as support condition and width-to-thickness ratio. Both graphs and buckling modes in this paper are good guide for design of the laminated composite plates with embedded square delamination.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the Timoshenko beam supported by two elastomeric bearings at two far ends. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam is derived, in which both effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included as the Timoshenko beam theory. Also, boundary conditions of the free end are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The ordinary differential equation is solved by the numerical methods for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes. Both effects of the rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. Also, relationships between natural frequencies and slenderness ratio, foundation modulus and bearing length are presented. Typical mode shapes of bending moment and shear force as well as deflection are given in figures which show the positions of maximum amplitudes and nodal points.
