  • Flexural properties were investigated on clear specimens made from small diameter thinned trees of pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.), Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), and sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.). MOR and MOE values of small clear specimen were depended on the species. The highest density of sawtooth oak shows the highest values of MOR and MOE. However, the lowest density of Japanese larch shows the lowest values of MOR. It was also shown that flexural properties could be predicted by stress wave MOE, since the correlations between stress wave MOE and flexural properties were relatively good.

  • A board was manufactured for each resin and sawdust addition using the chaff made by carbonizing the chaff charcoal, an agricultural by-product that emerge during the rice pounding process, and sawdust. And effects of the additions of resin and sawdust on coefficients of dynamic and static modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, as well as the relationship between the dynamic modulus of elasticity, statis modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rupture were investigated. As phenol resin addition of chaff charcoal-sawdust compound board increases to 10~25%, the bending performance has increased. This suggests that resin addition largely effects the bending performance. Although the bending performance was gradually increased with the increase in sawdust addition, since the coefficients of determination (R2) between the sawdust addition with the coefficients of dynamic, static modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rupture were 0.4012, 0.0809, and 0.1971, respectively. Thus, it showed a relatively lower correlation, and the effect of sawdust on bending performance was small. Since a high correlation was confirmed between dynamic and static modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rupture of chaff charcoal-sawdust compound board, it was confirmed that prediction of static modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture can be made in a nondestructive way from the dynamic modulus of elasticity.

  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for ceramics made by different carbonizing temperatures (600, 800, 1000, $1200^{\circ}C$) after impregnating the phenol resin with Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascen particle boards. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing carbonizing temperature. There were a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to modulus of rupture (MOR). However, the result indicated that correlation coefficient was higher in dynamic modulus of elasticity to MOR than that in static modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency by free vibration mode is more useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of ceramics made by different carbonizing temperature for Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens particle boards.

  • The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.

  • Strength relationships are presented through experimental data from the concrete strength tests in this study. Various strength tests such as the compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength and the modulus of elasticity are included. An experimental work was performed to determine the various strength characteristics for various mix designs. Three different coarse aggregates such as granite, limestone, sandstone were used and included were fine aggregates such as natural sand, washed sand and crushed sand. Also included was cement amount as experimental variable. It was confirmed that each strength value with respect to curing time is to follow a typical strength development curve. With this somewhat reliable test results various strength relationships such as flexural strength-compressive strength, splitting tensile strength-compressive strength, modulus of elasticity-compressive strength, splitting tensile strength-flexural strength were analyzed through statistics. Experimental data were well fitted to the 0.5-power relationship of flexural strength and compressive strength which has been commonly accepted. The splitting tensile strength is expected to be best in the linear relationship from the flexural strength data. Finally splitting tensile strength was found to be proportional to the 0.87 power of the cylindrical compressive strength.

  • An energy method has been used for an elastic formulation of bending vibration and buckling analysis of laminated composite plates on two-parameter elastic foundations. A quasi-elastic method is used for the solution of viscoelastic analysis of the laminated composite plates. The third-order shear deformation theory is applied by using the double-fourier series. To validate the derived equations the obtained displacements for simply supported orthotropic plates on elastic foundations are compared with those of LUSAS program Numerical results of the viscoelastic bending vibration and buckling analysis are presented to show the effects of layup sequence number of layers material anisotropy and shear modulus of foundations.

  • It is necessary to review the non-destructive indexes in order to estimate the bending strength performance of the domestic larch lumber. In this study, MOEs (modulus of elastic) the larch lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) were evaluated through non-destructive methods such as the ultra-sonic method, longitudinal vibration method, and non-destructive bending method. The non-destructive measurement method which best represented the static MOE was determined and applied as the MOR(modulus of rupture) estimation index. The MOE that was measured through the longitudinal vibration method showed the highest correlation with the static MOE. The MOR was highly related to the static MOE. Therefore, the non-destruction MOE measured through the longitudinal vibration method was used to estimate the MOR of the lumber.

  • In this study, analytical investigations on the flexural behavior of FRP reinforced concrete slab were discussed. In the derivation of analytic solution, the FRP reinforced concrete slab was modeled as a structural orthotropic plate. To determine the flexural rigidities of an orthotropic plate model, the elastic equivalence method was employed. In the finite element analysis, the approximate method to determine the rigidity matrix of orthotropic plate element was also suggested using the elastic equivalence method. The results obtained by the analytical solution and the finite element analysis were compared with that of experiment.

  • This study investigated the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of simply supported beams under a central concentrated load and a uniformly distributed load. A line-type finite element, method was incorporated with the "so-called" simplified and polynomial patterns of residual stresses. The effect of the load height was also considered in this study. The polynomial residual stresses assumed in this study was a quartic distribution in the flange and a parabolic distribution in the web. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beam was analyzed with four different I-sections manufactured in Korea. Results obtained in this study were compared with KSDM(design method in the 1995 Korean Steel Designers' Manual). The design method in KSDM was found to be generally conservative with and without a sub-beam attached to the main beam, which acted as an intermediate restraint.

  • This study examined true modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rigidity (G) for domestic woods with different slenderness ratios (L/D) using the static bending and stress wave tests. Bending properties of small clear wood specimen of three domestic wood species were determined at 12% moisture content. The results of this study indicated that both MOR and MOE of domestic woods were affected by the slenderness ratio. As the slenderness ratio increased, MOR and MOE increased. G and true MOE of domestic timber beams were obtained at different slenderness ratios by flexure test and stress wave test. The values reported here can be useful if these species woods are used for structural purposes. However, the reported values are only indicative and do not represent the true average of wood species due to the limited number of specimens tested.
