  • Gravity, magnetic and high-resolution seismic surveys were carried out in the Powell Basin to examine tectonic structure and recent sedimentation on Dec. 2002. The trend of negative gravity anomalies along the spreading axis of the Powell Basin changes from northwest to east-west toward south. Both boundaries of the basin with the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Orkey micro-continent show negative magnetic anomalies, which indicates that the boundaries were continental rift areas in the initial stage of spreading. Magnitude of the magnetic anomalies corresponding to the axis of the basin is rather small compared to those of normal spreading axises in other regions. Such small anomalies would be caused by reduction of magnetic strength of oceanic crust below thick sediments due to thermal alternation. High-resolution (3.5 kHz) seismic profiles reveal that top of the South Scotia Ridge is a flat terrain coverd with thin coarse sediments by glacial erosion. Thick oceanic sediments are deposited in the central part of the basin. Little deformation in the oceanic sediments indicates that the Powell Basin has been in stable tectonic environment after spreading of the basin stopped.

  • Specific survey objectives often cannot be met using only one geophysical method, as each method's results are influenced by the specific physical properties of subsurface materials. In particular, areas susceptible to geological hazards require investigation using more than one method in order to reduce risks to life and property. Instead of analyzing the results from each method separately, this work develops a four-quadrant criterion for classifying areas of levees as safe or weak. The assessment is based on statistically determined thresholds of seismic velocity (P-wave velocity from seismic refraction and S-wave velocity from multichannel analysis of surface waves) and electrical resistivity. Thresholds are determined by subtracting the standard deviation from the mean during performance testing of this correlation technique applied to model data of four horizontal and inclined fracture zones. Compared with results from the crossplot of resistivity and P-wave velocity, crossplot analysis using resistivity and S-wave velocity data provides more reliable information on the soil type, ground stiffness, and lithological characteristics of the levee system. A loose and sandy zone (represented by low S-wave velocity and high resistivity) falling within the second quadrant is interpreted to be a weak zone. This interpretation is well supported by the N values from standard penetrating test for the central core.

  • A high-resolution seismic profile acquired across the middle part of the Pungam Basin, one of the Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea, has been interpreted to delineate subsurface geological structures. Boundary faults, intrusive bodies, and unconformity surfaces are identified on the seismic section. Basin fills are divided into five depositional units (Units I, II, III, IV, and V in descending order). The normal faults were formed by transtentional movement along a sinistral strike-slip fault zone. Unconsolidated sediments, a weathered layer, and sedimentary layers overly the Precambrian gneiss. The granite body intruded at the southeastern part contacts the adjacent sedimentary rocks by a near-vertical fault. Granitic intrusions caused tectonic fractures and normal faults of various sizes. An andesitic intrusive body indicates post-depositional magmatic intrusions. Continuous strike-slip movements have deformed basin-filling sediments (Units I and II).

  • In order to study unconsolidated sediments upstream of the Soyang Dam, seismic refraction data were recorded along five profiles of 94 m length. Receiver interval and record length were 2 m and 204 ms, respectively. Recorded data were analyzed using the traveltime tomography and delay-time methods in order to reveal sediment distribution in the investigation site. The acoustic basements are buried at approximately 14 m deep and their thickness shallows to southeast approaching to a hill. On the basement, pre-existing sediments deposited before construction of the Soyang dam lies. This sedimentary layer is composed of paleo-soil and sandy sediments. Above this layer, recent sediments comprise the top layer which is believed to have been deposited since the formation of the dam. Average thickness of this uppermost layer is approximately 1.6 m, which is much thicker than in the downstream.

  • Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection profiles acquired from the southwestern margin of Ulleung Basin reveals that the cut and fill structures, which show U-shaped or V-shaped morphology, occur on variable size. The cut and fill structure mostly consists of fine-grained sediments on the well data and is characterized by transparent or semitransparent seismic facies on the seismic section. Such cut and fill structures dominantly occur in the syn-compressional megasequence (MSQ3), which was deposited during basin deformation of late Miocene, among the four megasequences of the study area. These cut and fill structures can be divided into three groups based on their size and formation time. The cut and fill structures of Group I were formed when Dolgorae structure was active, and occurred on a small scale. The cut and fill structures of group II were formed when both Dolgorae structure and Gorae V structure were active, and the number and size of those increased compared with group I. The cut and fill structures of group III were formed when Dolgorae structure was weaken gradually but Gorae V structure kept active, and the number and size of those decreased in comparison with group II. Consequently the cut and fill structures in the southwestern margin of Ulleung basin are interpreted as submarine canyon based on spatial distribution, size and fill sediment. They were controlled by the tectonic movement in response to basin closure and tectonic-induced sediment supply variation.

  • Seismic waveform inversion can be solved by using the classical Gauss-Newton method, which needs to construct the huge Hessian by the directly computed Jacobian. The property of Hessian mainly depends upon a source and receiver aperture, a velocity model, an illumination Bone and a frequency content of source wavelet. In this paper, we try to invert the Marmousi seismic data by controlling the huge Hessian appearing in the Gauss-Newton method. Wemake the two kinds of he approximate Hessian. One is the banded Hessian and the other is the approximate Hessian with automatic gain function. One is that the 1st updated velocity model from the banded Hessian is nearly the same of the result from the full approximate Hessian. The other is that the stability using the automatic gain function is more improved than that without automatic gain control.

  • Laboratory measurement of compressional wave velocity for two piston cores has been carried out successfully. The cores penetrated into the Holocene mud deposit located just off the Pusan harbor. Differences between the mercury delay method using a mercury column and the time delay method utilizing a digital processing oscilloscope for the observed velocity are negligible. Thus, both methods can be used independently to determine the velocity of unconsolidated marine sediment. The core velocity is, however, always higher than the velocity calculated from the seismic profile. This result should be considered seriously to interprete a seismic profile, otherwise one may encounter systematic error in calculating sediment thickness.

  • Physical, mechanical, hydraulic, and geophysical tests were applied to validate methods of inspecting the effectiveness of grouting on an agricultural reservoir dam. Data obtained from series of in situ and laboratory tests considered four stages: before grouting; during grouting; immediately after grouting; and after aging the grouting for 28 days. The results of SPT and triaxial tests, including the unit weight, compressive strength, friction angle, cohesion, and N-value, indicated the extent of ground improvement with respect to grout injection. However, they sometimes contained errors caused by ground heterogeneity. Hydraulic conductivity obtained from in situ variable head permeability testing is most suitable for identifying the effectiveness of grouting because the impermeability of the ground increased immediately after grouting. Electric resistivity surveying is useful for finding a saturated zone and a seepage pathway, and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) is suitable for analyzing the effectiveness of grouting, as elastic velocity increases distinctly after grouting injection. MASW also allows calculation from the P- and S- wave velocities of dynamic properties (e.g., dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic Poisson's ratio), which can be used in the seismic design of dam structures.

  • Seismic tomography has been widely used as high resolution subsurface imaging techniques in engineering applications. Although most of the techniques have been using travel time inversion, waveform method is being driven forward owing to the progress of computational environments. Although full-waveform inversion method has been known as the best method in terms of model resolving power without high-frequency restriction and weak scattering approximation, it has practical disadvantage that it is apt to get stuck in local minimum if the initial guess is far from the actual model and it consumes so much time to calculate. In this study, 2-D full-waveform inversion algorithm in acoustic medium is developed, which uses result of traveltime tomography as initial model. From the application on synthetic data, it is proved that this approach can efficiently reduce the problem of conventional approaches: our algorithm shows much faster convergence rate and improvement of model resolution. Result of application on physical modeling data also shows much improvement. It is expected that this algorithm can be applicable to real data.
