  • Rock mass contains discontinuities such as faults and joints, and their mechanical properties and spatial distribution dominate the stability of rock mass. Because the deformation of rock mass occurs discontinuities in many cases. However in the case of poor quality rock mass under high stresses, the deformation along intact rock can also influence the structure's stability. In this study, two dimensional finite element program was developed with a rheological model to analyze the stability of the structure excavated in jointed rock mass. The “equivalent material” approach was used assuming intact rock, joints and rock bolts as visco-plastic materials. The program was verified by analysing an intact rock model, a jointed rock mass model and a reinforced jointed rock mass model. The displacement was examined in each model with changing the intact rock behaviour as elastic and visco-plastic. In the case of poor quality rock mass under high stresses, e assumption of visco-plastic behaviour of intact rock resulted in larger displacement than when assuming elastic behaviour for intact rock. Therefore it is recommended to add intact rock's visco-plastic behaviour to the existing model, which only assumes visco-plastic behaviour of joints and rock bolts.

  • The high precision analysis by the p-version of the finite element method are fairly well established as highly efficient method for linear elastic problems, especially in the presence of stress singularity. It has been noted that the merits of the p-version are accuracy, modeling simplicity, robustness, and savings in user's and CPU time. However, little has been done to exploit their benefits in elasto-plastic analysis. In this paper, the p-version finite element model is proposed for the materially nonlinear analysis that is based on the incremental theory of plasticity using the constitutive equation for work-hardening materials, and the associated flow rule. To obtain the solution of nonlinear equation, the Newton-Raphson method and initial stiffness method, etc are used. Several numerical examples are tested with the help of the square plates with cutout, the thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure, and the circular plate with uniformly distributed load. Those results are compared with the theoretical solutions and the numerical solutions of ADINA

  • A general purpose of 4-node co-rotational resultant shell element is developed for the solution of nonlinear problems of reinforced concrete, steel and fiber-reinforced composite structures. The formulation of the geometrical stiffness presented here is defined on the mid-surface by using the second order kinematic relations and is efficient for analyzing thick plates and shells by incorporating bending moment and transverse shear resultant forces. The present element is free of shear locking behavior by using the ANS (Assumed Natural Strain) method such that the element performs very well as thin shells. Inelastic behaviour of concrete material is based on the plasticity with strain hardening and elasto-plastic fracture model. The plasticity of steel is based on Von-Mises Yield and Ivanov Yield criteria with strain hardening. The transverse shear stiffness of laminate composite is defined by an equilibrium approach instead of using the shear correction factor. The proposed formulation is computationally efficient and versitile for most civil engineering application and the test results showed good agreement.

  • Calculating the distribution of stresses and displacements around a circular tunnel excavated in infinite isotropic rock mass subjected to hydrostatic stress condition is one of the basic problems in rock engineering. While closed-form solutions for the distribution are known if rock masses are considered as elastic, perfectly plastic, or brittle-plastic media, a few numerically approximated solutions based on various simplifying assumptions have been reported for strain-softening rock mass. In this study, a simple numerical method is introduced for the analysis of strain-softening behavior of the circular tunnel in Mohr-Coulomb rock mass. The method can also applied to the analysis of the tunnel in brittle-plastic or perfectly plastic media. For the brittle-plastic case where closed-formsolution exists, the performance of the present method is verified by showing an excellent agreement between two solutions. In order to demonstrate the strain-softening behaviors predicted by the proposed method. a parameter study for a softening index is given and the construction of ground reaction curves is carried out. The importance of defining the characteristics of dilation in plastic analysis is discussed through analyzing the displacements near the surface of tunnel.

  • A coupled T-H-M(Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical) analysis was carried out for KENTEX (KAERI Engineering-scale T-H-M Experiment for Engineered Barrier System), which is a facility for validating the coupled T-H-M behavior in the engineered barrier system of the Korean reference HLW(high-level waste) disposal system. The changes of temperature, water saturation, and stress were estimated based on the coupled T-H-M analysis, and the influence of the types of mechanical constitutive material laws was investigated by using elastic model, poroelastic model, and poroelastic-plastic model. The analysis was done using ABAQUS, which is a commercial finite element code for general purposes. From the analysis, it was observed that the temperature in the bentonite increased sharply for a couple of days after heating the heater and then slowly increased to a constant value. The temperatures at all locations were nearly at a steady state after about 37.5 days. In the steady state, the temperature was maintained at $90^{\circ}C$ at the interface between the heater and the bentonite and at about $70^{\circ}C$ at the interface between the bentonite and the confining cylinder. The variation of the water saturation with time in bentonite was almost same independent of the material laws used in the coupled T-H-M processes. By comparing the saturation change of T-H-M and that of H-M(Hydro-Mechanical) processes using elastic and poroelastic material mod31 respectively, it was found that the degree of saturation near the heater from T-H-M calculation was higher than that from the coupled H-M calculation mainly because of the thermal flux, which seemed to speed up the saturation. The stresses in three cases with different material laws were increased with time. By comparing the stress change in H-M calculation using poroelasetic and poroelasetic-plastic model, it was possible to conclude that the influence of saturation on the stress change is higher than the influence of temperature. It is, therefore, recommended to use a material law, which can model the elastic-plastic behavior of buffer, since the coupled T-H-M processes in buffer is affected by the variation of void ratio, thermal expansion, as well as swelling pressure.

  • Seismic design of a building is usually performed by using the linear static procedure. However, the actual behavior of the building subjected to earthquake is inelastic and dynamic in nature. Therefore, inelastic dynamic analysis is required to evaluate the safety of the structure designed by the current design codes. For the validation, a RC special moment resisting frame building was chosen and designed by IBC 2003 representing new codes. Maximum plastic rotation and dissipated energy of some selected members were calculated for examining if the inelastic behavior of the building follows the intention of the code, and drift demand were calculated as well for checking if the building well satisfies the design drift limit. In addition, the effect of including internal moment resisting frames (non lateral resisting system) on analyses results was investigated. As a result of this study, the building designed by IBC 2003 showed the inelastic behavior intended in the code and satisfied the design drift limit. Furthermore, the internal moment resisting frames should be included in the analytical model as they affect the results of seismic analyses significantly.

  • This study is concerned with an application of the Boundary Element Method to 2-dimensional elastoplastic stress analysis on the material nonlinearities. The boundary integral formulation adopted an initial stress equation in the inelastic term. In order to determine the initial stress increment, the increment of initial elastic strain energy due to elastic increment in stressstrain curve was used as the convergence criterion during iterative process. For the validity of this procedure, the results of B.E.M. with constant elements and NISA with linear elements where compared on the thin plate with 2 edge v-notches under static tension and the thick cylinder under internal pressure. And this paper compared the results of using unmedical integral with the results of using semi-analytical integral on the plastic domain integral.

  • Advanced analysis and optimal design of steel arch bridges is presented. In the design method using an advanced analysis, separate member capacity checks after analysis are not required because the stability and strength of the structural system and its component members can be rigorously treated in the analysis. The geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability function. The Column Research Council tangent modulus is used to account for gradual yielding due to residual stresses. A parabolic function is used to represent the transition from elastic to zero stiffness associated with a developing hinge. An optimization technique used is a modified section increment method. The member with the largest unit value evaluated by AASHTO-LRFD interaction equation is replaced one by one with an adjacent larger member selected in the database. The objective function is taken as the weight of the steel arch bridge and the constraint functions account for load-carrying capacities and deflection requirements. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those given by other approaches.

  • Steel frame structures are widely used in construction because of their efficient strength and rigidity and considered proper cases for design and analysis using concept of plastic behavior. The purpose of plastic analysis is to determine the collapse load of a structure when the plastic moments of its members are given, and optimal plastic design is to compute the plastic moments of the members that minimize total structural weight. In this paper, the plastic analysis and optimal design are performed by using the static approach and solved by the simplex method. From the result of the analysis the solutions by this study show more efficiency in calculations. Also, the structural weight solved by the simplex method in case of two story frame is proved more economical than the one using the elastic design around 24%.
