  • Slurry shield tunnelling ensures stability by pressurizing the tunnel face with the slurry contained in the chamber. It resists water and earth pressure in order to prevent the failure in the tunnel face during tunnel excavation. If the ground is relatively coarse, slurry can not clog the tunnel face and excessive slurry infiltration will occur. In this case chemical compounds or additives should be added to the slurry in order to improve the clogging phenomena at the tunnel face. In this study, the effect of the carbon dioxide gas as an additive to the slurry instead of chemical compounds on the capability of enhancing the clogging in the tunnel face is investigated. Bubbles arising from the carbonate-added slurry are trapped in the soil voids enhancing the clogging capability. This effect is studied in this paper by performing laboratory model tests simulating in-situ conditions, and by adopting the fine particle clogging theory. Tunnel face stability analysis was also performed and it was found that the effective size ($D_{10}$) of soils which can guarantee tunnel stability utilizing the carbonate-added slurry increased from 1.0 mm up to 2.6 mm. Moreover, Stability analysis showed that the tunnel face is stable if the ${\lambda}$(deposition coefficient) value is greater than $0.007sec^{-1}$.

  • The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of diverse carbonate rocks can be investigated by using VNIRSWIR(visible near infrared-short wavelength infrared) spectroscopic analysis as a rapid, nondestructive, and inexpensive tool. Comparing whole rock analysis to VNIR-SWIR spectroscopic analysis, the analytical method was investigated to estimate CaO contents, mud impurity, and whiteness of carbonate rocks involved in high-grade limestones in the field. We classify typical carbonate rocks in the upper Pungchon Formation in high-grade limestone mine area such as the Gangweon, Chungmu and Baegun mine in the Jeongseon area. The results show that powdered specimen has much higher reflectance than cutted specimen between the same sample. Whiteness is highly correlated with reflectance(0.99) for powdered specimen. The absorption of mineral mixtures shifts in position as a result of the mass ratio of calcite and dolomite in the Chungmu mine by changing to 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75. The absorption peak position in carbonate mixtures is highly correlated with CaO contents(0.98~0.99). Based on color system, the carbonate rocks are grouped into (milky) white, light grey, light brown, grey, and dark grey. The absorption peak position shifts from 2340 nm to 2320 nm as CaO contents decrease from 55.86 wt.% to 29.71 wt.%. We confirmed that absorption peak position shifts depending on the amount of Ca, which is bonded to $CO{_3}^{-2}$, Mg, and Fe contents replacing Ca. This result suggests that CaO contents in carbonate rocks can be considered to quantitative analysis in the field by spectroscopic analysis.

  • For the evaluation of storage stability of kiwifruit, the conditions of CA storage were based on the following gas compositions; 2% oxygen and 2, 4, 6% carbon dioxide, respectively. The results obtained from the experiment were as follows; The flesh softening was considerably reduced at the storage atmospheres of 4% $CO_2$ plus 2% $O_2$, and fruit firmness of 3.0kg was marked in this CA condition after storage for 180 days. The concentration of $CO_2$ affected clearly on the respiration rate and organic acid compositions of kiwifruit during CA storage. The respiration rate at the storage condition of 6% $CO_2$ was lower than those at 2 and 4% $CO_2$. Quinic and succinic acid contents were obviously increased in the kiwifruit stored at all the CA conditions studied. In comparision of the developed amounts of off-flavor substances, ethanol and acetaldehyde, depended upon the concentration of $CO_2$ in the CA conditions, the larger amount were produced in the storage condition of higher concentration of $CO_3$. From the results mentioned above, it could be concluded that the optimum atmosphere combination for CA storage of kiwifruit was 4% $CO_2$ plus 2% $O_2$.

  • The $CO_2$-rich springs in the Kyungpook Province has been found at 16 locations. Most of the $CO_2$-rich springs outflow along either fault zones or the geologic boundary between Mesozoic granites and their adjacent rocks. The $CO_2$-rich water samples show a high $CO_2$ concentration ( $P_{CO2}0.46 to 5.21 atm), weak acidic pHs, wide electrical conductivity values ranging from 422 to 2,280 $\mu\textrm{S}$/cm, and high re content. They are classified into the ca-HC $O_3$ type in chemical composition.$\delta$$^{18}$ O and $\delta$$^2$H data indicate that $CO_2$-rich water is meteoric origin. The $\delta$$^{13}$ C values (-1.5$\textperthousand$ to -6.1$\textperthousand$ PDB) suggest that dissolved $H_2$C $O_3$$^{0}$ C $O_3$- are mainly derived from a deep-seated $CO_2$ and carbonate minerals. The thermodynamic equilibrium state between $CO_2$-rich water and major minerals, and hydrochemical characteristics indicate that major source minerals determining the chemical composition of $CO_2$-rich water are carbonate minerals, plagioclase, K-feldspar and Fe-oxides. Under high $CO_2$ pressure and the weak acidic condition, most of the $CO_2$-rich water samples are thermodynamically in the dissolution state with respect to albite and carbonate minerals.

  • This study was carried out to examine the $H^+$ transport mechanism by observing the properties of cellular membrane having an ${\alpha}$ type of carbonic anhydrase (CA)-containing cells in turtle urinary bladder. The urinary bladder consists of a heterogenous population of cells. As a result of fine observation with traditional thin-section electron microscopy. the bladder epithelium has three different cell types on mucosal surface. They are a basal cell, a granular cell and a third type of CA-rich cell. The CA-rich cells are divided into two distinct smaller groups within them and called them ${\alpha}$ type and ${\beta}$ type of CA cells. The ${\alpha}$ type of CA cells are responsible for the proton secretion using the proton pumps on the apical plasma membrane, while the ${\beta}$ type of CA cells secrete bicarbonate via an oppositely-directed proton pumps in their basolateral plasma membrane. After performing the freeze-fracture technique, it was shown that there were distributed a large number of intramembranous particles having a special structure on the apical membrane of ${\alpha}$ type of CA-rich cells in the process of their $H^+$ secretion. In turtle bladder ${\alpha}$ type of CA-rich cells, this particle was the only prominent structure in the apical membrane. These intramembrane rod-shaped particles probably represent the integral membrane components of the proton pump. This result may explain that carbonic anhydrase within epithelial cell of urinary bladder takes part in formation of $H^+$ and bicarbonate, that active transport of $H^+$ is done, and that the reabsorption of bicarbonate suggests transport mechanism containing $H^+$ secretion. However, it seems that more studies are required for considering their regular transport pathway.

  • It is laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) that enables qualitative and quantitative analysis of the elements contained in unknown specimen by comparing the wavelength characteristics of each element obtained from the spectral analysis of the standard specimen with the wavelength analysis results from unknown specimens. In this study, the applicability of LIBS to the analysis of major deterioration factors affecting concrete durability was experimentally analyzed. That is, the possibility of applying LIBS to the diagnosis of concrete deterioration by studying the quantitative detection of harmful deteriorating factors on chloride, sulfate and carbonated mortar specimens using LIBS was studied. As a result of LIBS test for each chloride and sulfate specimen, the LIBS spectral wavelength intensity of chlorine and sulfur ions increased linearly with increasing concentration. Carbon ion LIBS spectral wave intensities of carbonated specimens increased nonlinearly over the duration of carbonation exposure. From the above results, it can be partially confirmed that LIBS can be applied to the diagnosis of concrete deterioration. In case of concrete carbonation, it is presumed that carbon content is contained in the cement itself and is different from the detection of chloride and sulfate specimen. Therefore, it is considered that more various parameter studies should be performed to apply LIBS to concrete carbonation.

  • Molten carbonate oxidation (MCO) is one of the promising alternative technologies for the treatment of the chlorinated organic compounds because it is capable of trapping chlorine during a destruction of them. In this study, destructions of chlorinated organic compounds ($C_6H_5Cl$, $C_2HCl_3$ and $CCl_4$) and an insulated oil containing PCBs were performed by using the two stage molten carbonate oxidation system. MCO reactor temperature largely affected the destruction of the chlorinated organic compounds. Destruction of the chlorinated organics very efficient in the primary MCO reactor however a significant amount of CO was emitted from the MCO system. This CO emission was gradually decreased by an increase in the primary reactor temperature and oxidizing air feed rate. The HCl emission from the MCO system was below 7 ppm regardless of tested conditions. The chlorine collection efficiencies were in the range of 99.95-99.99%. The destruction of PCBs in the insulated oil was efficient at a temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ and overall destruction efficiency of them was determined as over 99.9999%.

  • The effect of carbonic anhydrase on $CO_2$ absorption rates and the heat of reaction were evaluated in various amine solutions for post combustion $CO_2$ capture process. The $CO_2$ absorption rate was analyzed in 30 wt% MEA, AMP, DMEA, MDEA aqueous solutions with and without carbonic anhydrase (250 mg/L) from bovine erythrocyte. $CO_2$ absorption rates were increased in all solutions with carbonic anhydrase. The effect of carbonic anhydrase on absorption rates was more in tertiary amine (DMEA and MDEA) solutions than in primary amine (MEA) and hindered amine (AMP) solutions. The heat of reaction of MEA, DMEA, MDEA aqueous solutions with and without carbonic anhydrase were measured using reaction calorimeter. Carbonic anhydrase decreased the heat of absorption in all solutions. The results suggested that tertiary amines that have the excellent desorption ability were suitable for applying carbonic anhydrase to the post combustion $CO_2$ capture process and the effect of carbonic anhydrase was best in MDEA solution.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical and carbon-capture properties of foam concrete containing stainless steel argon oxygen decarbonization(AOD) slag. AOD slag was used as a binder, and foam concrete having a foaming ratio of 69 ± 0.5 % and a slurry density of 573.2 to 578.6 kg / ㎥ was produced. In order to examine the effect of carbonation, blended specimen was cured by two types : normal curing and CO2 curing. As a result of the experiment, the specimens incorporating AOD slag showed higher compressive strength than Plain after CO2 curing. According to the analysis of the image of foam concrete, it was confirmed that the ST30 has a lower total pore volume and average pore size than plain, resulting in high compressive strength. The SEM analysis confirmed the formation of calcite by carbonation of AOD slag. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, the increase of CO2 uptake was confirmed by the incorporation of AOD slag. Foam concrete has a higher porosity than normal concrete, so it is expected that carbon-capture performance can be improved by using a AOD slag.
