  • Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) could be stored in the form of Ca and Mg compounds including alkaline earth metal by carbonation. The possibility of $CO_2$ storage was tested by using desulfurized ash from fluidized bed type boiler as raw material. Autoclave was used for maintaining the reaction pressure and temperature for the carbonation. The analysis of weight change rate, XRD, and TG/DTA proved that more than 15 % of carbonation rate was obtained under 10 $kgf/cm^2$ and $120^{\circ}C$-10 min.

  • At present, about 40 million tons of concrete is dismantled each year, which accounts for the largest portion of the total amount of construction waste with 60.8%. It is known about 97.5% of it is recycled. However, most of the usage of waste concrete is limited to lower value-added business areas, and considering the increasing amount of waste concrete generated due to the deterioration of structures, the need for converting waste concrete to structural concrete is urgent. Therefore, this study aims at estimating the period for the optimum carbonation reforming to improve the quality of recycled aggregate, by making use of the method of accelerated carbonation reforming of the bonding heterogeneous (cement paste and mortar) for the purpose of converting recycled aggregate to structural concrete. Based on the period appropriate for the heterogeneous thickness and each bonding thickness of recycled aggregate which was drawn from previous studies, the changes in the characteristics and physical properties of pore structure according to progress of accelerated carbonation were analyzed. The result shows that with the progress of carbonation, the pore volume and the percentage of water absorption of the bonding heterogeneous decreased and the density increased, which indicates improvement of the product quality. But after certain age, the tendency was reversed and the product quality deteriorated. Synthesizing the results of previous studies and those of the present study, this study proposed 4 days and 14 days respectively for the period for the optimum carbonation reforming of recycled fine aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of blast-furnace slag on chemical attack and carbonation of latex-modified concrete (LMC) and ordinary portland cement concrete as slag contents. Main experimental variables were performed latex contents (0%, 15%) and slag contents (0%, 30%, 50%). The compressive strengths, chemical attacks resistance and carbonation depth were measured to analyze the characteristic of the developed LMC and BS-LMC(latex-modified concrete added blast-furnace slag) on hardened concrete. The test results showed that compressive strength of BS-LMC with blast-furnace slag content 30% was quite similar to it of OPC without slag content. The structural quality deterioration was concerned when blast slag content was up to 50%. However, carbonation restraint of BS-LMC with blast-furnace slag 30% was bigger then that of opc. Also, the effects of added latex on OPC and BS-LMC were increased on the carbonation restraint and chemical attacks resistance.

  • In this study, the waste concrete sample obtained as various particle size (0~2.36 mm) was carried out the basic measurements and carbonation for analyzing the possibility of its carbonation. It was then investigated some analysis such as crystallization (XRD pattern), microstructure (SEM), and the production of CaCO3 through the ignition loss (TG-DTA). The content of CaCO3 in the waste concrete sample before carbonation was found in 14.51 % and 28.52 % after carbonation in 24 hours. Moreover, the content of CaCO3 carbonated in 24 hours with fine grinded waste concrete sample was 32.73 %. The carbonation of the waste concrete sample was rapidly performed up to 6 hours, but gradually increased from 12 to 24 hours. Especially, the amount of CaCO3 between 12 and 24 hours was only produced 2.32 %. The calcite-shaped CaCO3 crystals after carbonation of the waste concrete sample were found in microstructure and their peaks were strongly detected on XRD pattern.

  • This study investigated the impact of accelerated carbonation on Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC) paste that had undergone steam curing at 500℃·hr. Two carbonation environments were examined: atmospheric carbonation(1atm, 20% CO2) and pressurized carbonation(5atm, 99% CO2). Chemical analysis using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) were conducted, along with physical characterization via scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and compressive strength testing. Results indicated that atmospheric carbonation with 20% CO2 concentration significantly densified the internal microstructure of the OPC paste, leading to enhanced compressive strength. Conversely, pressurized carbonation at 5atm with 99% CO2 concentration resulted in rapid densification of the surface structure, which hindered CO2 diffusion into the sample. This limited the extent of carbonation and prevented the improvement of physical properties.

  • Recently, people are concerned about how to maintain structure well because of safety. For effective maintenance of the structure, it should be resolved about carbonation, Durability, and Service Life issues. Solving that problem will Increase Safety of Structure. The carbonation velocity is produced an effect on carbon dioxide density of surrounding near structures, the concrete quality Therefore, This study compares the Velocity of carbonation due to maintenance of the structure. Also, this study will find Service Life of Concrete Structure through Predicting Carbonation Depth.

  • As the importance of maintenance of reinforced concrete structure recently has emerged, the attention of durability of structure has been increasing. There are many studies about durability decline especially due to the carbonation. In order to study carbonation progress after surface repair of carbonated concrete, each carbonation penetration velocity from different repair materials of concrete structure is compared through the experiment of carbonation accelerating CO2 concentration to 100%. As carbonation infiltration progress is predicted through this study, the counterplan of service life evaluation will be prepared on selection of repair materials of concrete structure.

  • Carbonation (step I) and cryo-crystallization (crystallization at low temperature) (step II) were performed to synthesize Na compounds from sodium concentrated solution. In the step 1, the solubility and pH of carbon dioxide (95 wt.%) affecting carbonation could be changed by the variation of reaction temperature. The step II was performed at 2 ℃ after carbonation. The injection of carbon dioxide was carried out twice for the stable production and the saturated solubility of carbonate ions in solution. Firstly, we tried to inject CO2 for controlling the solubility of CO2 by changing the reaction temperature from 35 ℃ to 10 ℃, and the second injection was aimed at 10 ℃ for inducing nucleation of Na compound through carbonation after NaCl solution addition. In the cryo-crystallization step, the crystal growth of Na compounds could be induced by slowing the carbonation rate through reaction temperature change from 10 ℃ to 2 ℃. In this study, the effect on NaOH concentration was examined and the purity of Na compound was increased when 2M NaOH was used. In addition, the synthesized Na compounds were mostly rod-shaped and consisted of sodium carbonate or sodium carbonate with monohydrate.
