In this study, the hydration and carbonation properties of circulating fluidized bed boiler (CFBC) ash with different free-CaO contents were investigated. In addition, the possibility of utilizing CFBC ash with a high free-CaO content as a cementitious material was investigated by carbonation curing as a pretreatment. The CFBC ash with high free-CaO content exhibited rapid setting behavior and low early compressive strength when mixed with cement. For CFBC ash with high free-CaO content, carbon dioxide capture increased with the duration of carbonization curing. In addition, the free-CaO value decreased together, indicating that the free-CaO reacted with carbon dioxide. When the CFBC ash with high free-CaO content was pretreated by carbonation, no fresh set appeared, and the initial compressive strength was improved. From the results of this study, it is confirmed that CFBC ash with high free-CaO content has a high potential to be utilized as a cementitious material through proper carbonation curing.
Purporse : It is known that detection of calcification by MRI is difficulty in intracranial calcified lesions, but author tried to evaluate the signal intensity image of calcification by MR with experimental model. Subjects & Methods : Author analyzed and compared with values of calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite phantoms by each concentration (10, 20, 30, 40, 50%) and size(1-10mm), measured ROI attenuating from CT and MRI(TlWI & T2WI). Results : The high concentration of calcium carbonate is, the lower the signal intensity of calcium carbonate phantom is both T1 & T2WI. For concentration of Hydroxyapatite of up to 30% by weight the signal intensity on standard T1 weighted images increased but subsequently decreased. Hyperintensity does not preclude calcification as a cause of the signal alteration-an observation that all radiologists interpreting MR images need to be aware of. Conclusion: The signal intensity of intracranial calcification is various on MR imaging in concerning with components, concentration, & size of calcification, and especially high signal intensity of intracranial calcification noted differencial diagnosis.

Erosion is believed to be the predominant cause of teeth wear in children and young adults, although there will at ways be a contribution from attrition and abrasion. The pH of cola is known to be low and have, therefore, been implicated in the increasing incidence of erosion. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effect of cola on the progression of erosive demineralization in human enamel using demineralization model in vitro. Six groups of human enamel slap were immersed(5 min each bath) in fresh cola, with immersions taking place with or without agitation, and under 3 regimes of frequency intake(low intake, 1 immersion/day; medium, 5/day; high, 10/day). Quantitative assessments of surface erosion were done over an 8-day interval using surface microhardness testing. 1. The average pH of cola was 2.5, which was acidic enough to cause tooth erosion. 2. All the enamel specimen exposed to cola showed erosion like lesions and surface hardness decreased in proportion to the length of immersion (p<0.05). 3. The surface hardness of enamel decreased in proportion to the frequency of immersion (p<0.05). 4. Increased degassing from the drink by gitation accelerated the enamel softening compared with those without agitation.
Ettringite and thaumasite were observed in some concrete. The morphology and occurrence of these minerals were closely examined by performing SEM/EDAX analyses. We also experimentally induced the concrete deterioration using $Na_2SO_4$ solution with application of various environmental conditions. The stability of these minerals and deterioration characteristics under applied experimental conditions were determined. Abundant ettringite formed by“through solution reaction”occurred in many open spaces, and some microscopic ettringite formed by "tophochemical replacement" of calcium aluminate also occurred in cement paste. Severe cracking of cement paste causing premature deterioration was often associated with ettringite location. Under specific condition, ettringite was transformed to thaumasite, tricthloroaluminate, or decomposed. Thaumasite occurred with association of ettrinsite in concrete containing carbonate aggregate being subject to dedolomitization or in some concrete being subject to carbonation. Thaumasite appears to be formed under the similar condition to the general ettringite forming condition, but it formed solid solution with ettringite by substituting pre-existing ettringite. Ettringite can also be transformed to trichloroaluminate in the presence of abundant chlorides, but trichloroaluminate changed back to ettringite in late sulfate attack. It is considered that the substitution reaction direction solely depend on the concentration of chloride and sulfate ion.
Hierarchically controlled sequence stratigraphic analysis shows that the Lower Ordovician mixed carbonatesiliciclastic Mungok Formation, Korea consists of three depositional sequences: T1, T2, and T3 in ascending order. Sequence boundaries are generally marked by abrupt transition from coarse-grained shallow-water carbonates to finegrained deeper-water carbonates mixed with fine-grained siliciclastics, and show indication of subaerial exposure such as karstification. Within this sequence stratigraphic framework, facies characteristics indicate that the Mungok sequences were mostly deposited on a subtidal ramp without slope break. The Mungok ramp had been under the influence of frequent tropical storm activity during deposition. The difference in lithology of tempestites seems to have been controlled by the nature of substrates and by proximality. High-frequency cycles consist of upward-shallowing facies successions. Cycles of shallow-water and basinal deposits are not well represented, probably due to cycle amalgamation. Cycle stacking patterns do not show a consistent thickness change that is usually associated with a large-scale sea-level change probably because of unfilled accommodation space.
The fire resistance of particulate polypropylene composite systems were investigated by using various reinforced particles such as zeolite, talc, $CaCO_3$ particles. In this study, The effect of particle size on the thermal properties of composite and the effect of reinforced particles on the fire resistance were studied. The inorganic reinforced particles used in this study were recycled zeolite(average particle diameter=85.34 $mu extrm{m}$), $CaCO_3$ (33.93 $mu extrm{m}$), and talc (18.51 $mu extrm{m}$). The fire resistance of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring limited oxygen index (LOI, ASTM D2863) and cone calorimetry (ASTM E1354, ISO 5660). Thermal stability of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring TGA. The flame retardants (DBDPO) and reinforced particles reduce the maximum heat release rate (M-HRR) in the order of Talc > $CaCO_3$ > recycled Zeolite. Comparing the cone calorimetry experimental results of the particle reinforced polymer composite system exhibited twice higher efficiency than DBDPO in polypropylene systems, and the LOI also showed similar trends to the cone calorimetry experiments. The optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to investigate the composites ash layer and the core fracture surfaces in the burning process. The reinforcing inorganic particles seemed to accumulate at the surface of ash layer, and subsequently intercept the oxygen transport and heat transfer into the core area.

On-site diagnosis applied to soil having a symptom of yellowing and whitening in cucumber leaf and stem. Soil pH determined 4.2 by methods of on-site analysis and 4.5 by soil test analysis. High aluminum in soil solution extracted with water saturation was detected. Leaf and stem tissue were abundant in Al content but not in Ca. Also, N content of leaf and stem was low compared to normal N ranges. This symptom of cucumber assumed to be from the Al and nitrous acid gas toxicity by low soil pH and Eh. Conclusionally, symptom in leaf and stem of cucumber was alleviated and cucumber normally recovered during cultivation period by applying calcium hydroxide solution to correct soil pH up to 6.5. These results showed that low soil pH resulted in aluminum toxicity and N deficiency to plant growth in on-site farming.
The carbonate rocks of the Daegi Formation are composed of the limestone at the upper and lower zones, and the dolomite at the middle zone, in which the upper zone has higher CaO content than others. The colors of carbonate rock in the Daegi Formation can be divided into five types; white, light brown, light gray, gray, and dark gray. The white to light gray colored rocks correspond to the high purity limestone with 53.15 ~ 55.64 wt. % CaO, and the light brown colored rocks contain 20.71 ~ 21.67 wt. % MgO. The bleaching of carbonate rocks are not related to CaO composition of the rocks, as light gray rocks tend to be higher in CaO content than those of the white rocks at the lower zone. The pelitic components are also occasionally increased in white limestone than light grey one. $Al_2O_3$ is one of the most difficult content to remove during hydrothermal processes, so the interpretation that the limestone is purified together with hydrothemral bleaching, has little merit. The wide range (over 16 ‰) of ${\delta}^{18}O_{SMOW}$, smaller variation (within 2 ‰) of ${\delta}^{13}C_{PDB}$ are apparent in both the upper and lower zones, which indicate the Daegi Formation had been affected overall by hydrothermal fluids. The K-Ar isotopic age of hydrothermal alteration in the GMI limestone mine is $85.1{\pm}1.7Ma$. Gradual change from grey through light grey to white limestone is accompaned by lower oxygen stable isotope values, which is major evidence that the hydrothermal effect is the main process of the bleaching. Although the Daegi Formation has suffered from hydrothermal activity and increase in whiteness, there is no clear evidence demonstrating the relationship between bleaching and high purity of limestone. The purification of limestone has nothing to do with the hydrothermal activity in this area. Instead, it should be considered that the change of sedimentary environment related to see-level fluctuation which can prevent deposition of pelitic components especially $Al_2O_3$ contrbuted to the formation of the high purity limestone in the upper zone of the Daegi Formation. Considering the evidences such as increase in CaO content of limestone by depth, gradual change from calcite to dolomite at the lower zones, and occurring the high purity limestone at the upper zone, the interpretation of sequence stratigraphic aspect to the formation of the high purity Daegi limestone appears to be more suitable than that of hydrothermal alteration origin.
Microbialites are defined as rocks formed by microbial organisms. After their first appearance around 3.5 billion years ago, microbialites occur in various depositional environments throughout geological periods. Microbial organisms form microbialites by trapping and binding detrital sediments and/or precipitating carbonate cements, resulting in formation of various microstructures and mesostructures. Four major types of microbialites are distinguished based on their mesostructures: stromatolite, thrombolite, dendrolite, and leiolite. In the geological records, occurrences of microbialites are influenced by calcium carbonate saturation of seawater and interaction of microbialites with metazoans. Stromatolites mainly flourished during the Precambrian, and diminished as level of atmospheric carbon dioxide declined. On the other hand, thrombolites, mainly formed by calcified microbes, began to flourish from the Neoproterozoic. As metazoans diversified in the Phanerozoic, proportion of the microbialites within sedimentary record declined. Since then, microbialites only occasionally flourished during the Phanerozoic, such as shortly after mass-extinction events. In the Korean Peninsula, microbialites occur in the Neoproterozoic Sangwon System, the Early Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup, and the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup, which form different shapes according to their age and depositional environments. By performing detailed studies on these Korean microbialites, it is possible to understand how microbes affected geological records and sedimentary environments, as well as their interaction with other organisms.

Pearl is the organic gemstone which does not come from mines but from the biomineralization inside mollusc. Mollusc with nacre on inner surface of the shell is inevitable to make pearl. In this paper we researched and analyzed the pearls cultured using Pen shell (Atrina pectinata) which is not used in pearl farming industry but has potential to make pearls because it has thick and beautiful nacre inside the shell. SEM analysis was conducted to reveal the pattern of nacre on the Atrina pectinata pearl. Specific characteristics as sea-water pearl are detected by further analysis with ED-XRF. Aragonite specific peaks such as $1083cm^{-1}$ and $705cm^{-1}$ were shown by Raman analysis. UV-Vis analysis of Atrina pectinata pearl showed different pattern of spectrum compared with Pinctada margaritifera pearl. The reason for this discrepancy is assumed by the metabolic difference of each species.
