  • To evaluate growth adaptation of the soybean in paddy field, five soybean cultivars were grown in Yeoncheon with two cultivating methods, level row and high ridge. Growth characters of the top plants, such as stem lengths, numbers of branches, diameters of stem, were higher under high ridge than under level row. However, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods in each cultivar. Comparing the growth of top plants, dry matters in level row were higher than those in high ridge in V5 stage, however, via verses as growth progressed with significant differences among the cultivars. Roots were more developed under high ridge than those under level row during whole growth stages, such as V5, R2, and R5 stages. T/R ratio in level row was significantly higher than that in high ridge with significant differences among the cultivars.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effect of planting date and cultivation method on soybean growth and yield in paddy field. The plant height of soybeans in single cropping(SC) was higher than those in cultivating after barley culture (CB). Considering planting date and cultivation method, plant height tend to be higher in SC with level row cultivation(LR) and in CB with high ridge cultivation(HR). In this SC method, nodule formation in LR was better than in HR, but number of nodules of cv. Hwangkeumkong was highest, regardless of planting date and cultivation method. In the progress of growth stage, leaf areas of all cultivars were distinctively increased in CB than in SC. However, dry weight of top plants and roots in SC was comparably higher than that in CB due to growing periods of the soybeans. In cultivation methods, general type of dry weight of top plants was higher in LR than in HR, however, root dry weight was via verses. Growth responses varied depending on cultivars, cultivation methods, and planting date and these factors affected to shoot root (T/R) ratio. The T/R ratios in LR and SC were higher than those in HR and CB. In R8 stage, number of pods and ripened seed varied depending on cultivars. cv. Hwaeomputkong, which showed early maturing trait, was lowest. However, both yield factors tended to be higher in HR and CB than in LR and SC. The ratios of ripened seeds percentage of cv. Hwangkeumkong and cv. Eunhakong were higher in CB than in SC. However, yields of cv. Daewonkon and cv. Taekwangkong were higher in CB than in SC.

  • Seven varieties of soybeans(Paldal, Danyeob, Jangbaek, Baegun, Jangyeob and 2 cultivars of Local 1 and Local 2) were investigated to compare the water uptake properties and volume changes during soaking in water. The hydration properties showed that the equilibrated weight increase ratio decreased as the soaking temperature raised to higher than $40^{\circ}C$, while the initial water uptake rate increased upto $80^{\circ}C$. The increase in hydration showed a linear relationship with the square root of the soaking time at $4^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. Local 1 was the highest in water uptake rate constant while Local 2 was the lowest. The activation energy calculated was in the range of $3,246{\sim}4,694\;cal/mole$. The Jangbaek and Local 1 were the highest and the Paldal was the lowest in the rate of volume increase. The activation energy for volume increase was in the range of $3,310{\sim}4,190\;cal/mole$. The z-values calculated from volume change was a little higher than those obtained from weight change.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations for developing new varieties and cultural techniques for vegetable soybean at the Crop Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration, Suwon, Korea in 1992. Two vegetable soybean varieties, 'Hwaeom-putkong' and 'Seokryangputkong', and the other 'Jangyeobkong' for soy-paste were planted at three planting dates(April 15, May 15, June 15). The characteristics of growth, yield, and quality were compared between vegetable and soy-paste soybean genotypes in response to different planting dates.Vegetable soybean varieties, 'Hwaeomputkong' and 'Seokryangputkong' were more resistant to lodging, earlier in maturity, higher in the density of pod set on stem and percentage of poded nodes, and larger in grain size than Jangyeobkong for soy-paste. Earlier planting (April 15) of vegetable soybean varieties increased the yield of green pod as well as improved quality in number of green pods per 500g and length and width of green pod.

  • Three lipoxygenase isozymes in soybean seeds are thought to be a major contributor to lipid peroxidation and generation of free radicals which may result in seed deterioration. This study was conducted to get the basic information for changing lipoxygenase activity during seed germination in lipoxygenase-lacking soybeans. Fresh weight of soybean seedling of Jinpumkong 2 and Taekwangkong increased more rapidly than that of Jinpumkong. Hypocotyls of Jinpumkong and Jinpumkong 2 were longer and thicker than that of Taekwangkong. Type I lipoxygenase activity (pH 9.0) in cotyledon of Jinpumkong lacking lipoxygenase-2, 3 showed higher than that of Taekwangkong, and Type I lipoxygenase activity of two cultivars decreased continually. On the other hand, Type II lipoxygenase activity of Taekwangkong began to increase continually two days after germination, reached to the maximum between 4 days and 5 days, and began to decrease continually five days after germination. Type I and II lipoxygenase activity in hypocotyls was not detected in all soybean cultivars.

  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate the mfluence of honeybees pollinatIOn on yield and YIeld components of soybean at the Kyungbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration from 1990 to 1991. SIX soybean varieties were cultivated in net houses with and without bees. Italian honeybees(Apis melhfem L.) were used. The Vlsiting frequency of bees in net house wIth bees was 58% higher than that of field honeybees, and it was the highest at 10 A.M. during a day. Number of pods per plant and podding ratio of soybean were higher with bees compared with Wlthout bees, especially for the varieties Paldalkong and Dankyongkong. The number of seeds per pod was not significantly different between with bees and without bees, although the percentage of three seeded pod of varieties Danyeobkong and Muhankong and one seeded pod of varieties Hwangkeumkong and Milyangkong 'was increased. The percentage of three seeded pod of Paldalkong and Dankyeongkong, however, was decreased with bees compared with without bees. At the same time no varietal difference was found in two seeded pods between with bees and without bees. Yield of soybeans was increased 0 to 12 % with bees compared with that of without bees. Yield increase was the hIghest in Paldalkong and Dankyongkong. The ratIO of soybean hybrid plant was mcreased with-bees compared with that of without-bees, especially m Paldalkong and Dankyongkong. A negative correlation was found between the ratio of hybrid plant and the duration of flowering in soy¬beans.

  • This study was conducted to find on the screening of a optimal variety after compare with characteristics of a colored soybean recommended and a vegetable soybean by pure line isolation from the indigenous variety in Chungnam area. The budding period in results compared with a budding property of testing varieties between the recommended colored soybean 6 varieties and the indigenous 3 varieties, was showed that it was delayed by increasing of a grain weight but the budding rate was not significant. And the harvest period was the most early day at the black colored soybean plot at the 30th July and was the latest day at the native variety (Nonsan jaerae) at the 21 th October. The stem length was showed a wide range from 25 to 104 cm, and the Asan jaerae in this result was the highest on 104 cm, but the Geomjeongolkong was the lowest on 25 cm. The number of pod per plant was searched about 9 to 111 range, and the most numerous plot in this experimental varieties was the Ilpumgeomjeongkong as 111 number, on the other hand, the least variety was the Asan jaerae as 9 number. The rate of more than 2 seed per pod in the vegetable soybean property was the highest at the Geomjeongolkong about 82%. Additionally, the Hwangkuemkong and Geomjeongkong 1 was relatively the high levels as 78% and 73%, respectively. At the pod yield per $1000\;m^2$ (10a) was the most much as 1,567 kg at the Ilpumgeomjeongkong. Also, the Sunheukkong and the Galmikong was 1,468 kg, 1,397 kg, respectively. Therefore, the Ilpumgeomjeongkong, Sunheukkong, and Galmikong were proper varieties for the vegetable cultivation.

  • Little is known about the genetic variability in lutein content for soybeans (Glycine max L.) cultivated in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to screen high quality soybean cultivars for lutein content. The lutein contents of 23 recommended varieties, 56 sauce varieties, 44 sprout varieties, and 40 local varieties were determined by saponification followed by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We found that IT No. 153398 and 22789, originating from sauce and local varieties, respectively, contained significantly higher amounts of lutein as compared to the other 161 samples. Moreover, relevant quantitative differences were found among the samples, which had lutein contents ranging from 83 to $402{\mu}g/100g$ in the recommended varieties, from 39 to $778{\mu}g/100g$ in the sauce varieties, from 52 to $589{\mu}g/100g$ in the sprout varieties, and from 106 to $861{\mu}g/100 g$ in the local varieties, respectively. In summary, this study provides reliable lutein data for soybean cultivars that can be used for breeding studies and the development of functional foods.

  • Five soybean varieties of two early maturing Karikei73 and SS 79168, and three late maturing Tohoku76, Baegunkong and Jangbaegkong were used and evaluated in the study. Of the varieties examined, Karikei73 was characterized by the delayed leaf senescence. The varieties were planted in the pots of 1/3500 a filled with volcanic ash soil at the experimental fields of the National Institute of Agrobiological Resources in Japan. Major agronomic characteristics including the activity of nitrogen fixation for root nodules during the grain filling period were measured. Measurements during the stages were followed by the stage of development descriptions for soybeans made by Fehr and Carviness (1977). The acetylene reducing activity (ARA) per dry weight of root nodule measured using acetylene reduction assays was the highest at R4-R4.5 with decreasing trends thereafter for the early matruing varieties, while it continuously increased up to R6 but decreased rapidly thereafter for the late maturing varieties. The dry weights of root nodules and all parts of the host plant at each stage checked were greater in the late maturing varieties being the same in ARA per pot.
