An Intelligent Character Manipulation System Suitable for Wireless Broadband Network Environment (휴대인터넷에 활용 가능한 지능형 캐릭터 제작 시스템 개발에 대한 연구)

  • The aim of this paper is to design an intelligent character manipulation system suitable for the wireless broadband network environment named as Wibro and for the recent social networking service (SNS). The main feature of our proposed system is an automatic synthesis of a character utilizing the meta data which is attached to each component stored in a character database. It is the second advantageous feature that a user can make or modify his or her own character by modifying the component animation clip of its character. Once the character database is created, it can be represented and utilized in several ways by utilizing the meta data which is related to personal properties including emotion, life style, favorite things, and so on. The system can be evolved to a more powerful one by adopting the more user-related information and the more intelligent synthesis module.

  • This paper suggests our own new brand, Kirin. Not only we are able to design the symbolic animal of UOU, but also we are able to use the character to advertize UOU and merchandize it. These days many men between teens and 30s contact with the various characters through internet games, also they purchase goods related with the characters. For women between elementary students and workers, they purchase the various character goods such as stationery, clothes, and dolls. However, there are not many universities that produce their own characters to advertize their schools and to merchandize them. From this point of view, developing new brand would be the medium of transmitting joy to attract excellent students and to elevate the love of school. Originating the distinctive character in UOU can be used as various merchandising through licensing. Moreover, this friendly brand using character would be produced as skin image of fun and stories and spread through internet homepage. Finally, it would accord with the brand needs of consumer and contribute to advertize UOU.

  • As game and character animation industries are growing, techniques for reproducing realistic character behaviors have been required in various fields. Therefore, intensive researches have been performed in order to find various methods for realistic character animation. The most common approaches to character animation involves tedious user input method, simulation with physical laws based on dynamics, and measurement of actors' behaviors with input devices such as motion capture system. These approaches have their own advantages, but they all have common disadvantage in character control. In order to provide users with convenient control, the realistic animation must be generated with high-level parameters, and the modification should also be made with high-level parameters. In this paper we propose techniques for developing an automated character animation tool which operates with high-level parameters, and introduce techniques for developing actual games by utilizing this tool.

  • Uncanny Valley is a theory proposed by Japanese robot engineer Masahiro Mori in 1970, and refers to the point where the likability drops sharply when the appearance of a robot becomes very similar to a human being without a fully equipped robot. In this study, the theory of existing literature, related papers, and experimental data were analyzed to examine the Uncanny Valley effect that affects character design. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Uncanny Valley effect is applied to modeling virtual characters distributed in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. To this end, 15 characters were selected based on the similarity with humans in the Marketplace of the Unreal Engine, and similarity with humans and likability were investigated and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the Uncanny Valley effect was similarly applied to virtual character modeling, and through this, guidelines for the use of characters by indie game developers or individual developers using Unreal engines were presented. In addition, through result analysis, we tried to examine the direction to be pursued when designing characters.

  • The users need the communication that interaction is possible in digital communication environment. It is necessity to develop the Interactive Character that various emotional expression was possible while a user-centered emotional display tool was necessary. It is a fundamental research that is going to develop the Interactive Character that individualized emotional expression is possible. In other words, I have the purpose that is going to show the aromaticness of the technology development to express feelings. Therefore, I am going to analyze whether no matter how much technology to express feelings mainly on a face expression is incarnated through an example. And, I am going to show the development direction of the Interactive Character as an emotional display tool through this.

  • 현대 영상산업에서 컴퓨터 그래픽스가 차지하는 비중은 크게 늘어나고 있다. 컴퓨터 그래픽스 기술의 발달로 인한 디지털 영화나 애니메이션이 점차 증가함에 따라 이러한 장면이 등장하는 가상캐릭터를 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 이런 가상 캐릭터를 이용하여 가상 해저 환경을 생성하기 위해서는 3D 모델링 및 애니메이션 기술을 개발해야 한다. 국내에서는 가상 해저 환경을 구축하여 실감 체험을 할 수 있는 VR 콘텐츠 기술 개발에 관련하여 군중 장면 처리 및 군중 행동 시스템의 설계 및 구현 등의 연구가 있었으나 군중 행동 모델러 기술 개발을 실용화 할 단계까지는 미치지 못하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 가상 해저환경에 존재하는 다수의 캐릭터의 움직임을 수작업으로 제공하는 것이 시간과 비용이 많이 소요되기 때문에 이를 자동화하여 보다 사실적이고 효율적인 가상 해저환경 속에서 군중 행동 장면을 생성하기 위해서 Fish 군중 행동 모델러 기술을 개발한다.

  • Customizing system is acting a main role for the character production system of MMORPG. However, since using the high degree of freedom in MMORPG, these characters are too individual and lack of awareness. We can describe each character's emotional characteristics and understand the correlation of characters more easily by adjusting design factors capable of cognitive decision to characters. Game character developer should consider seeking efficient character design process that is suitable to MMORPG game environment and users for proper character recognition and promoting character preferences. In addition, this research being extended on the article vol.13, no.3, "A Study on Cognitive and Preference of Games' Character" on Korean Society of Basic Design in June 2012 issue and this study is expected to have effectives as one method for the purpose of this research is to inquire and present what type of relation lies between recognition and preference of game characters of MMORPG.

  • 소셜네트워크게임이 대중적인 산업으로 인정받은 이후 국내외의 수많은 전문업체들이 비슷한 유형의 게임들을 제작 및 발표하고 있다. 본고는 2년간의 연구개발을 통하여 개발된 소셜네트워크게임의 작품개발 계획과 목표에 관하여 분석한 후 개발되어진 캐릭터디자인의 요소들을 분석하여 각 매개체들이 갖고있는 이미지의 형상화에 관한 의미를 되짚어 보고자 하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 사진 이미지를 이용하여 사용자가 직관적으로 이미지상의 3차원 물체의 특이점을 바탕으로 대화적 방법을 이용하여 메쉬를 생성하고 렌더링을 거쳐 3차원 모델로 완성시키는 캐릭터 개발 도구에 대해 기술한다. 3차원 물체를 모델링하는 데에는 CAD 분야에서 많이 쓰이는 것과 같이 기하학적 모델링을 근거로 하여 개발된 많은 3차원 그래픽 도구를 이용하여 정교한 모델을 구성하는 방법도 있겠지만 응용에 따라서는 정교한 구성보다는 짧은 시간에 쉽게 모델링과 애니메이션 장면을 구성하는 방법이 필요할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 응용 분야에서 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 도구의 개발 과정을 설명한다.
