  • This study was aimed at searching for the wintering Cd hyperaccumulators as the life cycle of existing hyperaccumulators were mostly from spring to early winter season. The wintering hyperaccumulators can be effective for saving time loss during the winter. A pot experiment was conducted to search for hyperaccumulators through out the native wintering plants. Seven species of native wintering plants were applied; Bromus catharticus, Oxatis corniculata, Festuca rubra, Thlaspi. arvense, Agastache rrgosa, Viola seoulensis, and Patrinia rapestris. Among them, Bromus catharticus and Thlaspi arvense were selected as Cd hyperaccumulators; the two plants accumulated 112.35 and $86.69mg\;kg^{-1}$ of Cd in the shoot, respectively.

  • Accumulation of cadmium (Cd) was investigated in organs (gill, liver, kidney, intestine) of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) exposed to sub-lethal concentration (5, 10, 50, 100 $\mu$g/L) of Cd for 30 days. Cd exposure resulted in an increased Cd accumulation in liver of flounder for exposure periods and Cd concentration, and Cd accumulation increased linearly with the exposure time. At 20 days of Cd exposure. the order of Cd accumulation in organs was Bill>intestine>liver>kidney and after 30 days of exposure, Cd accumulation in organs was intestine>liver>gill>idney. An inverse relationship was observed between the accumulation factor (AS) and the exposure level, but AE shows an increase with exposure time.

  • In this study the authors investigated the distribution of cadmium accumulated in cadmium-iun tolerant Hansenula anomala B-7 cells and also the effect of cadmium on protein synthesis. 84.9% of the cadmium accumulated was distributed in the soluble fraction (cytosol, etc.). The intracellular protein content was decreased by cadmium (1,000 $\mu g$/ml), but the content of soluble protein preeipitated by ammonium sulfate (30-75% saturation) was increased compared with the content of it obtained from the cells grown without cadmium. Furthermore, in the cells grown with 1,000 $\mu g$/ml of cadmium t h higher molecular weight soluble protein was increased compared with the cells grown without caa, mium, but the lower molecular weight soluble protein was decreased. These results suggested that the protein synthesis was inhibited by cadmium, but synthesis of higher molecular weight soluble protein was remarkably stimulated by cadmium.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of pork on the cadmium detoxification in rats. Ninety male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $125.3{\pm}1.4g$ were divided into five groups based on cadmium treatment(0, 25, 50, 100, 250ppm) and five levels of Cd in AIN-76 purified diet had been fed for 8 weeks. Cadmium was supplemented with a form of $CdCl_2$.. During following 8 weeks of intoxication, casein was replaced by pork and the effect of pork on cadmium- detoxification was compared with casein. After 8 weeks of Cd intake had resulted in apparent cadmium intoxication; reduced growth rate, enlarged kidney and testis, decreased hematocrit value and hemoglobin content in response to the supplemented Cd levels in the diets. Discontinuing cadmium feeding, the body weights were relieved. Pork-fed groups seemed to have higher body weight than casein-fed groups. Hemoglobin content and hematocrit value became normal range at detoxification stage. The weights of liver, kidney, and testis were decreased along with cadmium intake. However, organ weight ratio was not affected by cadmium. Cadmium accumulation in liver and kidney showed a tendency to increase in the cadmium-exposed groups. The levels of metallothionein were also significantly elevated in the tissues of liver in response to the levels of Cd supplemented(p<0.05). Cadmium concentration in kidney was two times higher than that in liver. Cadmium removal rate of liver was higher than that of kidney. Cadmium accumulation of the pork-fed group was lower than that of casein. Especially, the factors which affected the cadmium contents in kidney were $Cd^{***}$ and $Cd{\times}pork^{***}$. Metallothionein(MT) was increased with cadmium, and MT was not likely to be affected by pork. Based on the findings from gross lesion, rats fed 250ppm of Cd were externally emaciated, had exposed penis and observed atrophies of kidney and testis. Histopathological observation seemed that the liver of groups feeding Cd supplemented diets showed cellular degeneration and accumulation of eosinophilic materials in the capillaries. In kidney, rats fed Cd diets had shown tubular epithelium degeneration and lesions of basophilic materials, while testis were weakened in numbers of spermatid and sporadically enlarged of giant cells. But the rats administered cadmium-detoxified diet supplemented pork for 7 weeks were shown individually decreased lesions compared with the rats supplied with casein diet.

  • To find out the protective effects of Kamdootang against accumulation of cadmium in rats, the experimental rats were divided into 2 groups. One group was administered with cadmium alone and the other group administered with cadmium mixed with Kamdootang. Each group has been orally administered with different doses of cadmium such as 1.7 ${\mu}g/g/day$, 3.4 ${\mu}g/g/day$ and 6.8 ${\mu}g/g/day$, respectively, for 1 to 8 weeks. As a results, body weight gained has a tendency to decrease more in the Kamdootang treated groups and non-treated groups than in control group. Cadmium accumulation in kidney showed a significant difference between the Kamdootang treated group and Kamdootang non-treated group. As the experiment period is longer and longer, both groups have got more significantly cadmium accumulation amounts. The kidney system was researched through histopathological observation that Multiple foci of necrosis, hemorrhagic necrosis in glomeruli and cloudy swelling of tubules in kamdootang non-treated group. but tissue lesion of kidney was showed less kamdootang treated group than Kamdootang non-treated group. As remarked above results, when dose low concentrated Cd in rat, Kamdootang was reduced accumulation of Cd. in kidney.

  • The effect of $Cd^2+$ on chlorophyll content, water potentials, ion transport, photosynthesis, stomatal apertures and $Cd^2+$ accumulation of organs in Commelina communis was investigated. 3-weeks old Commelina. communis was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution in the presence or absence of 5 mM $Cd^2+$ for 4 days. $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in all parts of the organs including leaves, roots and stem. The proximity from the root and the age of leaf were significant factors responsible for the distribution of cadmium. Most of $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in the first leaf which was the nearest from the root. $Cd^2+$) accumulation in the leaves led to significant reductions in a series of physiological metabolism. $Cd^2+$ reduced total chlorophyll content up to 70%, and changed chlorophyll a/b ratio to 2. $Cd^2+$ also reduced about 20% of water potential. The treatment of $Cd^2+$ showed about 60% inhibition of photosynthetic activity when measured at various light intensity (100-1,000 $\mu$mol $Em^-2s^-1$). Similar effect was found in terms of stomatal conductance. Therefore, it could be concluded that the treatment of $Cd^2+$ decrease or block various physiological activities. • This study was performed to investigate the growth response of earthworm (Eisenia foetida) in cow manure added Cadmium (Cd) and therefore, to estimate the toxic threshold level of Cadmium and the levels of Cadmium in cow manure for obtain-ing the maximum Cadmium-concentration enable to accumulate in earthworm tis-sue. Seven different concentrations of Cadmium added in cow manure were 0 (control), 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 mg/kg, respectively. Survival rate (SR), mean fresh weight of adult worm at final time ($FW_2$), increasing rate (IR), number of cocoon (NC), number of young worm (NY) and residual matter (RW) were not significantly different among Cadmium concentrations in cow manure. Of the measured growth-characteristics, survival rate (SR) had a significantly positive correlation (p<0.001) with number of cocoon (NC). But mean fresh weight of adult worm at final time ($FW_2$) had a significantly negative correlation (p<0.05) with residual matter of cow manure. The maximum Cadmium concentration accumulated in tissue was ranged from 283.8 mg/kg to 396.2 mg/kg. It was obtained at the level of 956.5 mg/kg and 1116.6 mg/kg in cow manure added Cadmium, respectively.

  • This experiment was studied to obtain basic environmental effects and biological information on the early growth of larval mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Mitten crabs were maintained for each larval stage with solutions containing 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 ppm of cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg). The relationship between survival rate of mitten crabs and metal content in the growth chamber showed a positive correlations. However, it showed a significant difference in the 96 $hr- LC^{50}$ values of Cd and Hg for the E. sinensis larvae from the first zoea larva to juvenile. Hg was more toxic to E. sinensis larval than Cd. When Cd and Hg are released into the water, they enter E. sinensis larval and are biological magnified. These results of survival rate and bioaccumulation are very important when considering the survival of the mitten crab.
