  • Effect of monoterpene composition in pine needles on the susceptibility to pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye) has been pursued. The pines studied include 5 susceptible and 2 resistant species. Also included were severely damaged or unaffected P. densiflora in the pine gall midge affected region. From the needles of the pine trees, 9 monoterpenes were identified by GLC. No correlationship, was found to hold in the monoterpene composition between pine gall midge susceptible and nonsusceptible pine species. Concentrations of limonene, however, gradually increased following oviposition in the unaffected P. densiflora while the concentrations of the monoterpene remained constant in the damaged P. densiflora. Effect of high limonene concentration in the needles of P. densiflora is discussed as a possible factor inducing resistance toward the pest in the unaffected Pinus densiflora.

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data for using domestic structural softwood lumber efficiently and ensuring structural safety of timber structures. The ratios (k-factor) between static and dynamic MOE measured by ultrasonic device for $2{\times}6$ domestic softwood structural lumber are 1.0602 for Korean red pine, 1.0013 for Korean white pine and 1.2320 for Japanese larch. In machine grade using nondestructive method, 76% of Korean red pine was classified into higher than E9 grade, 85% of Korean white pine was sorted into higher than E7 grade and 68% of Japanese larch was classified into higher than E11 grade. Correlation between MOE and MOR by static bending with k-factor from nondestructive method provide a possibility to predict bending strength and allowable stress of domestic softwood structural lumber.

  • Pine forests existing in Hong-do island were examined as regarding such characteristics, tree form, needle length, branch diameter, bark colors, ratio of summer wood to springwood, location and number of resin canal and other measurements. Hong-do island, located the furthest west part of Korea, suports only Pinus densiflora but very few Pinus thunbergii, in fact the present authors could not find any black pine individuals at all through investigation. Checking 14 individual trees of red pine, more than age of 20, of the genetic contamination by black pine, in a certain degree, exist. Here, a very dense foliage type and a very sparse foliage type tree of red pine growing nearby was examined and the unique fact was that each of those type has only one (average number 1.3) accessory resin canal, while other trees have three as minimum or more. The present authors thought this island had not been covered by any Pinus thunbergii but by Pinus densiflora. It was thought that Pinus thunbergii stands grown along the sea-coast of Korean Peninsula are pollen donors to this island.

  • This study was conducted to examine biomass production and its allocation characteristics by the planting density for 12- year - old Pinus densiflora forma erecta Uyeki plantation located in Chilbo Experimental Forest of Seoul National University in Suwon, Kyonggj-do. Different sample trees were selected for harvest by the planting density as follows; six trees from 1.0m X 1.0m, five trees from 1.8m X 1.8m, four trees from 3.0m X 3.0m. Stem, previous year branches, current year branches, previous year needles and current year needles were weighed respectively with the stratified clipping method, and biomass production and its allocation characteristics were analyzed : (1) Total biomass of the above-ground was the highest at the planting density of 1.8m X l.8m and followed by 1.0m X l.0m. (2) The higher the planting density was, the lower the ratio of biomass in branches and needles. (3) As the planting density decreased, the moisture contents of stem and current year branches increased but those of needles and previous year branches decreased. (4) Maximum photosynthetic layer appeared in the upper portion of the tree at higher density plantation.

  • Resistant and susceptible pine (Pinus thunbergii, Parl) trees to pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis, Uchida et Inouye) were selected and monoterpene composition in one year old branches, shoots and needles of both groups have been analysed by GLC. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Monoterpene composition in either one year old branches or shoots were not affected by their directions (North or South). 2. Major monoterpenes in one year old branches were ${\alpha}-pinene,\;{\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene. 3. In addition to ${\alpha}-pinene$, camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, myrcene, ${\Delta}^3-carene$, limonene, ${\beta}-phellandrene$ and terpinolene, several less volatile components which appear to be monoterpenes were also present in shoots and needles. 4. Compared with the susceptible pine, the resistant tree was found richer in limonene composition. 5. ${\beta}-Pinene$ composition in the resistant pine was less than that in the susceptible pine. 6. The difference in the composition of limonene or ${\beta}-pinene$ between two groups of pine trees was discussed in relation to the resistance to pine gall midge.

  • The goal of this study was to review the visual grading and allowable stress determination methodologies for the domestic softwood. Previous studies used different grading (KFRI 1995-27, KFRI 2000-39, KFRI 2007-3, KFRI 2009-1) and allowable stress determination methodologies (ASTM D 245, KS F 2152, JAS 1990). The results of the visual grading were different by each researcher. Compared to the $1^{st}$ grade proportion from the previous studies using the previous specification on visual grading (KFRI 1995-2007), a higher $1^{st}$ grade proportion was found from the studies using the current specification (KFRI 2009). Compared to the allowable stress values from the small clear sample, the higher allowable stress values from the structural size were found. The results indicated that the strength reduction factor used in small clear sample was too conservative for the different grades. To obtain consistent results for the grade, it is required to have experts in visual grading and authorized organizations. An official standard methodology for the allowable stress value determination needs to be defined for the reliable stress value.

  • Tropical hard wood produces a number of extracts, especially hot-water extracts. The lignin content in the two kinds of bangkirai and red lauan belonging to genus Shorea, was as high as in temperate zone soft wood, mangrove wood of genus Rhizophara contained it on the same level as temperate zone hard wood and keruing of genus Dipterocarpus was in between the two kinds of bangkirau and red lauan, and keruing wood. The xylose content of saccharose composition in the tree of genus Shorea, was as low as in needle-leaved trees, mangrove wood contained it on the same level as broad-leaved trees and the xylose content in keruing wood was in between the above two kinds of wood. The total retrieving rate of alditol acetate acetificated with sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride, did not reach 100%, even if it was supplemented. There was no difficulty in analyzing alditol immediately after acetification but, when it was left for four or five days, the acetificated alditol acetate was dissolved. The pyridine alditol acetificated with pyridine and acetic anhydride, showed the same result.

  • Artificial acid rain (pH 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) was treated on the seeded pots of 4 species to examine its effects on germination, leaf injury and seedling growth. Artificial acid rain was prepared by diluting sulfuric acid with ground water and ground water (pH 6.5) was used as control. Artificial acid rain was sprayed to seeded pots three times per week. About 5mm of artificial acid rain was treated each time from early April to early October, 1991. Germination, seedling establishment, leaf injury, soil acidity and seedling growth were measured and compared among the treatments. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Germination and seedling establishment rate of Pinus thunbergiana was highest on the pH 4.0 pot whereas that of Picea abies was highest on the pH 3.0 pot. Those of Pinus densiflora and Abies holophylla were not significantly differed among the treatments. 2. The differences in seedling height of all species were not significantly differed among the treatments. 3. Seedling dry weight of Pinus densiflora differed significantly among the treatments. but that of Pinus thunbergiana did not differ. 4. With decrease of pH value of artificial acid rain. the number of injured needle and injured individual tended to be increased. 5. The differences of soil acidity were significant among the treatments for all species.

  • Landsat satellite images were analyzed to study vegetation change patterns of warm-temperate forests from 1991 to 2002 in Wando. For this purpose, Landsat TM satellite image of 1991 and Landsat ETM image of 2002 were used for vegetation classification using ENVI image processing software. Four different forest types were set as a classification criteria; evergreen broadleaf, evergreen conifer, deciduous broadleaf, and others. Unsupervised classification method was applied to classily forest types. Although it was impossible to draw exact forest types in rocky areas because of differences in data detection time and rough resolution of image, 2002 data revealed that total 2,027ha of evergreen broadleaf forests were growing in Wando. Evergreen broadleaves and evergreen conifers increased in total areas compared to 11 years ago, but there was sharp decrease in deciduous broadleaves. GIS-based management system for warm-temperate forest was done using Arc/Info. Geographic and attribute database of Wando such as vegetation, soils, topography, land owners were built with Arc/Info and ArcView. Graphic user interface which manages and queries necessary data was developed using Avenue.
