  • The purpose of this study was to examine that marital conflict, maternal parenting behavior, and a child's friendship quality varied as a function of bully/victim groups. A sample of 227 elementary school children and their mothers participated in the study. Children answered questionnaires regarding maternal parenting behavior, friendship quality, and bullying/victimization and mothers rated their marital conflict. The data were analyzed by frequencies, factor analysis, one-way ANOVAs, and Duncan's post-hoc analyses. The bully/victim distribution was 8.4% bullies, 7.9% victims, 4.4% bully-victims, and 79.3% normative contrasts when reported by children themselves and 9.3% bullies, 4.8% victims, 5.3% bully-victims, and 80.6% normative contrasts when reported by peers. Bullies and bully-victims experienced higher marital conflict than normative contrasts. Bully-victims perceived higher maternal warmth than bullies and both bullies and victims perceived higher maternal rejection/punishment than normative contrasts. Victims perceived their mothers to be more permissive/neglected than normative contrasts, and bully-victims perceived them to be more overprotective than both bullies and normative contrasts. Both bullies and bully-victims showed higher negative function of friendship quality than victims.

  • This study investigated associations between attachment and friendship. This study also examined the mediating effects of empathy on the association between two variables. Participants consisted of $4^{th}$ to $6^{th}$ grade elementary school children including 173 boys and 141 girls. Two elementary schools were located in Seoul and Bucheon. Children participated in a peer nomination interview. They nominated their three most liked peers. Children's responses to the best friend of the peer nomination identified the children's best friends. A Friendship Quality Scale measured children's positive friendship quality and friendship satisfaction. Children completed the Inventory of the Parent and Peer Attachment Scale that assessed maternal and paternal attachment. In addition, they completed a children's version of the Empathy Quotient that measured empathy. Pearson's correlation and Structural Equation Modeling were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that attachment had a direct influence on friendship network. Children who had the high levels of attachment security had large friendship network. However, attachment did not have a significant effect on friendship quality. Moreover, empathy had mediating effects on the association between attachment and friendship quality as well as the friendship network. The results of this research highlight the importance of attachment and empathy on children's friendship.

  • The main purpose of this study was to assess the effects of SES, mother's psychological well-being, child-rearing behavior and child's peer relationship on school adjustment. A total of 237 children enrolled in the 5th and 6th grade and their mothers were used for this study. Data was collected via questionnaires completed by children and their mothers. The path analysis of antecedent variables influencing child's school adjustment revealed two different patterns. Firstly, socioeconomic status influenced child's school adjustment through maternal psychological well-being. Secondly, maternal psychological well-being affected by socioeconomic status contributed to child's school adjustment through positive child-rearing behavior and positive peer relationship. Focusing on maternal psychological well-being and mother's child-rearing behavior, the implication for promoting child's school adjustment are discussed.

Method: Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire method from 362 university students in four different regions. The data were analyzed through various statistical methods such as t and F tests, Pearson's correlation analyses, and multiple regression analyses. Results: First, there were significant differences in the level of psychological well-being according to gender and the monthly family income, showing that males and higher family income group reported greater psychogocal-well-being level. Males also reported lower level of anxious attachment. Second, correlational analyses results indicated that college students' psychological well-being was positively related with family strengths and secure attachment, and was negatively correlated with avoidant and anxious attachment. Finally, the results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that college student's psychological well-being was influenced by family communication, secure attachment, and anxious attachment, showing that anxious attachment was the most influential variable. Conclusions: This study suggests the importance of providing education and/or counseling services focusing on strengthening the positive relationship with their friends and on increasing the family communication for college students' psychological well-being.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of Korean older adults' use of Social Network Service (SNS) and text messages with frequency of contact with 1) non-coresident adult children, 2) siblings and relatives, or 3) friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. Data were drawn from the 2017 Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons 65+ (N=8,392), and older adults were categorized into 4 groups depending on their familiarity with use of SNS and text messages. Ordinary Least Squares regression models were estimated for analyses. Results revealed that older users of both types of communication media reported frequent exchanges of calls, text messages, etc. with both family and friends. However, using SNS and text messages was consistently related to more face-to-face contact with non-family members. To conclude, older adults' familiarity with communication media could be key to exchanges of emotional and instrumental support with informal social network members and quality of life in the community. Overall, our results highlight the importance of information communication education targeting older adults for continued involvement with their informal social network members.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of successful ageing and the influencing factors focusing on social support from family and friends to improve elderly's quality of life. The 300 respondents, all participants in programs at facilities for the elderly, were interviewed via a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results are as follows. First, the average score for successful ageing among the participants was above average. Second, the level of successful ageing varied according to income and religion. Third, the common variables affecting active or emotionally successful ageing were support from friends, subjective health conditions, and gender. It is suggested that the community should be informed of the importance of support from family through educational programs, as the elderly still want the support of family despite family's reduced role.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of family relations on facility adaptation of the elderly. In January and February of 2018, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 5 ~ 6 elderly residents of each long-term care facility, and finally 353 data were used for analysis. The main results of the study were as follows: First, the adaptation level of the elderly was high. As for 'maladjustment of group behavior' and 'movement shock', the level of maladjustment is low as 2 points, and adaptation dimension such as 'accept of new residence' and 'making friend' is above the middle level. Second, the influence of family variables was more influential than the demographic characteristics of the elderly and the influence of the facility-related variables. Among them, the closeness with family is the most influential. Therefore, it is suggested that the elderly need active support and efforts to maintain the intimacy with the family from the entrance to the facility and the time after the entrance.
