  • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition. A total of 319 pregnant women were recruited at 21 to 24 weeks of gestation. Information on demographics, health status and health behaviors including regulary use of interdental cleaning aids, that can influence periodontal condition was collected. Full mouth periodontal probing was performed. Periodontitis was defined as CAL of 4.0 mm or greater on 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. Gingivitis was defined as 15 percent and more sites showed bleeding on probing. Gingival crevice fluid sample was collected for bacterial analysis. We studied a total of 319 subjects, comprised of 116 subjects who use interdental cleaning device regularly and 203 subjects who didn't. Subjects who do not use interdental cleaning regularly had 2.3 times higher risk of gingivitis and 2.7 times of periodontitis, 2.3 times more amount of P. gingivalis. There was a significant relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting the health behaviors and urinary tract tests of adults and their effects on periodontitis by using raw data from the 6th National Health and Nutrition Survey (1st, 2nd, 3rd year). The subjects were 40 years older who had oral examination and urine tests such as glycosuria and ketonuris. The final 11,036 subjects were analyzed using SPSS. ${\chi}^2-test$ and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and differences in urine levels and presence or absence of periodontitis. There was statistically significant difference between the urine test values and the incidence of periodontal disease in urine glucose and proteinuria. Risk factors were male, age, income and education level, rural, smoking, obesity, urine glucose. These results suggest that improvement of health behavior and aggressive management of systemic disease factors are necessary and development of management and preventive program of Periodontitis is necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting the health behaviors and Cardiovascular Disease and their effects on periodontitis by using data from the 6th KNHANES(2013~2015). The subjects were 19 years older who had Periodontitis and Cardiovascular Disease(hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction, stroke) The final 14,940 subjects were analyzed using SPSS (SPSS 23.0 Windows). Chi-quare test and complex sample logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and Cardiovascular Disease and presence or absence of periodontitis. Results were related to hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction and stroke. The prevalence of periodontal disease was 0.684 times lower in the absence of hypertension. Men, age, education, pre-sleep brushing, floss and interdental toothbrushes were statistically significant. As a result, it is necessary to improve health behavior and systematic management of both diseases, and to help develop preventive education programs between diseases in the future.

  • This study was to examine whether an middle-aged adults can depression by the mediating effect of periodontal status on the association between health practice behavior and depression. The analysis was conducted on 2,064 of the aged 45 to 64 in middle-aged by using raw data from the 2015 National Health and Nutrition Survey. The data were analyzed using SPSS for windows version 24.0 and SPSS PROCESS-macro. As a result, middle-aged depression was higher in female(0.15) than in male(0.10). The living alone were the lowest in the health practice behavior(3.92) and the highest in the depression(0.25) and the periodontal status(1.76). Also, analysis using the PROCESS macro indicated that the periodontal status has a mediating effect between health practice behavior and depression. These findings suggest that periodontal status is closely related to depression and this will be used as basic data for development of mental health promotion programs for middle-aged adults.

  • This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the health-related quality of life in terms of periodontal disease by using the data from 8,035 respondents aged ≥40 years, excepting those with cancers having an serious impact on the quality of life, in the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2016-2018). The risk of quality of life deterioration was 1.32 times higher in the periodontal disease group than in the healthy periodontal group, those who were ≥50 years of age and had ≥2 comorbidities showed lower quality of life in the periodontal disease group. These results have confirmed that adults with periodontal disease get aware of the adverse quality of life though they have only a few chronic conditions and are expected to be useful as basic data necessary to develop health promotion programs that can help prevent periodontal disease and improve the health-related quality of life for adults.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to confirm health behaviors that affect periodontal health status. Based on these results, we also intended to provide information for the prevention of gingivitis prior to periodontitis and establish strategies for maintaining healthy periodontal tissues. Methods: Data for this descriptive study were extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015. A total of 2,710 adults, aged 19-39 years were included in this study. Complex logistic regression analyses were performed to confirm relationships between health behaviors and periodontal health, after adjusting for socio-demographics, oral and systemic health status. Results: Dental clinic visits (odd ratio [OR] = 1.761, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.391-2.229), use of floss (OR = 1.504, 95% CI; 1.213-1.865), and non-smoking (OR = 1.269, 95% CI; 1.040-1.549) were found to support periodontal health. Conclusions: Dental visits for continued professional oral health care, self-oral care including interdental flossing, and a non-smoking habit, are necessary for periodontal health maintenance. Additionally, the results suggest that physical activities such as regular walking can help. These methods should be considered as the primary preventative care strategies for minimizing the occurrence of gingival inflammation.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between the Korean healthy eating index (KHEI) and periodontal disease in the Korean adult population. Methods: The data used in the analyses were obtained from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018). Data were analyzed by chi-square tests and t-test. Multiple regression analysis was also performed to assess the association between KHEI and periodontal disease. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for socioeconomic variables showed that medical and health behavior variables were significantly related to the KHEI 1 (<63.7, odds ratio [OR]: 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.46), KHEI 2 (63.7-79.9, OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 0.97-1.34), and risk for periodontal disease. Conclusions: The results showed a significant association between the KHEI and periodontal disease in the Korean adult population.
