  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of adolescents' Internet Usage Levels on their oral symptoms using the data from 60,040 students in the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey in 2018. The logistic regression for the effects of Internet Usage Level on the oral symptoms were analyzed using a logistic regression method. Symptoms of toothache when eating and throbbing symptoms, and gum pain symptoms showed high levels of stress, and high awareness of pain when lower daily frequency of tooth-brushing. In addition, the less time spent on the Internet, the more subjective health awareness, the higher sleep satisfaction, the less smoking and drinking experience, Results were significantly lower. In conclusion, health education that mitigates adolescents' excessive use of the Internet is believed to enable proper health practices and is intended to help develop health education programs that can prevent such oral symptoms.

  • The Purpose of this study was to estimate relative importance among the causative factors o( arch length discrepancy(ALD) and Possibility of prediction of the ALD in the mixed dentition. The sample consisted of the casts of the 142 young adults who had no abnormal muscle function, no skeletal abnormalities and Class I molar relationship. We classified the sample by gender and the extent of ALD, and measured mesiodistal diameters of each tooth and the dimensions of the dental arch. The computerized statistical analyses was carried out with SPSS win program. The results were as follows ; 1. Most of the variables of spacing group and some variables of dental arch dimension of crowding group were significantly different between genders. But in normal group, there were few differences. 2. In male crowding and female spacing group, mainly measurements of tooth dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 3. In male spacing and female crowding group, measurements of dental arch dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 4. The measurements of dimension of dental arch were highly correlated with ALD in correlation analysis and factor analysis. 5. Prediction equations for adult's ALDs by means of what can be measured in the mixed dentition(mesiodistal dimensions of incisors and first molar, intermolar width and arch length) showed R square from $63\%$ to $80\%$.

  • Bolton analysis is widely used to predict tooth size discrepancy. but its accuracy has been challenged. The purpose of this study was to describe true anterior tooth size discrepancies among orthodontic patients and to evaluate the factors that affect true anterior tooth size discrepancies. The subjects consisted of 80 patients with varying malocclusions (Class I. Class II. Class III. and Class III surgery) who were treated orthodontically. Pre-treatment models. set-up models from post-treatment models. and lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed The results were as follows. The means. the standard deviations. and ranges of anterior Bolton ratio in the present study were somewhat higher than those of Bolton's samples and Korean normal samples. The number of patients showing maxillary deficiency was larger than that of patients showing maxillary excess in view of true anterior discrepancies. There was a significant difference between anterior Bolton discrepancy from pre-treatment models and true anterior discrepancy from set-up models (p < 0.05) There was no significant difference in true anterior discrepancies among malocclusion groups (p > 0.05). And there was also no significant difference between the male and female groups (p> 0.05). Overbite and the incisal edge thickness of maxillary anterior teeth have little relationship with true anterior discrepancies. Multiple regression analysis showed that true anterior discrepancy was mainly determined by anterior Bolton ratio, upper incisor to occlusal plane angle after treatment. interincisal angle after treatment. and upper right lateral incisor width.

  • Data derived from odontometric studies are useful in many areas. Especially crown diameter of primary teeth is important in not only anthropology but also clinical dentistry. The purposes of this study were to compare diameters of primary molars of Korean children with those of preformed stainless steel crown, and examine racial characteristics of primary molars of Korean children. The mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters of primary molars were measured on dental casts taken from 235 children(male 105, female 131), with digital calipers. And the data were compared with those of preformed stainless steel crowns. The results were as follows; 1. No significant difference was observed between the right and left members of antimeric teeth and all primary molars of male were larger than those of female. 2. The diameters of primary molars of Korean are smaller than those of Austrailian aborigines and there was significant difference between diameters of primary molars of Korean and those of other populations. 3. There were size differences between diameters of maxillary, mandibular first molar and preformed stainless steel crown than other primary molars, relatively.

  • Aim of this study is to examine correlation between size of the coronal pulp cavity and chronological age in adult. Total 716 teeth (218 mandibular canines, 230 first premolars, 268 second premolars) free from pathologies and dental restorations were selected from 276 patients (111 males, 165 females), ranging from 20-69 years. Using periapical X-ray, the height (mm) of the crown (CH=coronal height) and the height (mm) of the coronal pulp cavity (CPCH=coronal pulp cavity height) of the teeth were measured. The tooth-coronal index (TCI) after Ikeda et al (Jpn. J. For. Med. 1985;39:244-250) was computed for each tooth and regressed on real age. With increasing age, the TCI was relatively decreased, indicating the reduction of length of the pulp chamber. Even reduction of the TCI with aging was found in combined group rather than in each sex and type of tooth separately. The most definite reduction was in canine of combined group. The correlation coefficient was strongest when measurement from canines of females (r2=0.247).

  • The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between obesity and dieting to dental care in a convergent manner. This is a secondary analysis study using data from National Health and Nutrition Survey(2008 & 2018), and the subjects of the study are those with permanent treatment experience. The data in this study were t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis using SPSS /WIN 24.0. As a result of the study, The experience of permanent tooth caries according to gender was high in woman(M=.76, W=.83), and the experience of permanent tooth caries according to the educational level showed that the caries experience of high-educated level(College or higher=.92). In the difference according to the subjective body type recognition, it was confirmed that obesity was associated with the experience of permanent tooth caries. Among the weight control methods, fasting was the most influential on the permanent tooth caries experience. The experience of permanent tooth caries according to the weight change was found to have an effect on both weight loss and increase, In future studies, not only studies of sugar intake related to obesity, but also proper oral health education study that informs about the risk of dental caries in the diet that is progressing in line with the current trend should be continued.

  • Individual dental age is used as an index of chronological age estimation and is an important indicator of the child's growth stage. Dental age does change greatly over time, but it changes constantly. And updating information about this change is important. The purpose of this study was to provide information about tooth eruption stage using diagnostic model analysis and to investigate tooth eruption sequence and estimate chronological age based on this information. Tooth eruption stages were measured on a diagnostic model from 488 patients in 5 - 13 year old children. Based on the information on eruption stage, eruption sequence in maxilla was first permanent molar, central incisor, lateral incisor, first premolar, canine, second premolar and second permanent molar. Eruption sequence in mandible was first permanent molar, central incisor, lateral incisor, canine, first premolar, second premolar and second permanent molar. There were significant differences between males and females in the eruption stage of canine, first and second premolar, and second molar at several ages. The chronological age of male and female was estimated by the coefficient of determination of 0.816, 0.826 respectively.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between removable denture and depression. This study aims to investigate the relationship between depression and each group by dividing them into a group that were using removable dentures and a group that needed removable dentures but were not using removable dentures. Materials and methods: This study was conducted using raw data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). By using variables related to the state of the prosthesis and the need for prosthesis among oral examination data, the oral examination data were classified into two groups; group using removable denture and group in need of removable dentures. In addition, the variables of depression were classified into normal (0-4), mild depression (5-9), moderate depression (10-19), and severe depression (20-27) using the values of PHQ-9. For statistical analysis, logistic regression analysis was performed using SAS 9.4. Results: In the group in need of removable dentures, the risk of severe depression was statistically and significantly higher than the group using removable dentures. Conclusion: In patient who have lost multiple teeth, rehabilitation of the missing area with removable dental prosthesis is expected to decrease the occurrence of severe depression.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to confirm the correlation between oral frailty and health-related quality of life (HINT-8) among older adults in Korea. Methods: The data of 1,318 individuals aged ≥65 years who participated in the eighth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019) were analyzed using complex sample statistical analysis. Results: Chewing discomfort was found to decrease the HINT-8 scores by 1.246, 1.324, and 1.089 times in the physical, social, and mental domains, respectively. Speech discomfort was found to decrease the HINT-8 scores by 1.275, 1.449, and 1.175 times in the physical, social, and mental domains, respectively. The HINT-8 scores of participants with ≤19 natural teeth were lower in the physical and social domains. Similarly, the HINT-8 scores of participants with brushing frequency of ≤2 were lower in the positive health domain. Non-use of oral hygiene products led to a reduction in the HINT-8 score in the social health domain. Conclusions: Oral frailty in older adults reduces the health-related quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to formulate policies to manage oral frailty in this population and develop specialized programs for the management of oral frailty.
