This study evaluated the toxicity of the burning gas from the synthetic wood products used in housings or warehouses. The combustion products of five materials, viz. impregnated laminated board, MDF, Douglas fir plywood, core plywood, and Lauan retardant, were analyzed using SEM, FTIR and a Cone Calorimeter. For the Lauan retardant, 256,965 ppm of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and 1,475 ppm of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) were measured, which are 2.5 times and 3.6 times as high as their lethal concentrations of 100,000 ppm and 400 ppm, respectively. For the impregnated laminated board, 1,569 ppm of nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) was measured, which is 6 times as high as its lethal concentration of 250 ppm. For MDF, 795 ppm of ammonia ($NH_3$) was measured, which is higher than its lethal concentration of 750 ppm. As a result, most internal-finishes generated toxic combustion products at levels higher than their lethal concentrations, which underlines the importance of the selection and manufacturing of internal-finish materials.
Polyclads (Stylochus ijimai and Pseudostylochus obscurus) which damage oyster were treated with calcium hypochlorite to determine the TLm concentration. In this experiment the TLm and the extermination density as well as the growth of the oyster after the treatment were checked with following results: The higher the temperature and the longer the period of the treatment is, the lower the TLm is. The greater the concentration of sea water is, the higher TLm is because of the weakened action of calcium hypochlorite. When the oyster is treated by calcium hypochlorite at the oyster farm, its extermination concentration is 2.4-7.1 times higher than that of TLm in fresh water. The growth rate was not affected after the treatment.
It may occur health hazards or death by suffocation or acute poisoning in case of oxygen deficiency in ambient or exposure to harmful gas. As a part of accident prevention, we studied the change of activity and lethal dose by changing the concentration of several hazardous gas with inhalation exposure chamber and laboratory animals. We investigated the lethality and motility change during either the 4 hrs whole body exposure to oxygen, nitrogen, toluene, $H_2S$, CO and 48 recovery. As results, it is estimated that 5% oxygen concentration as lethal concentration and 5.5% as $LC_{50}$ (rat, 4 hrs) with statistics for dose-response. The results of lethality in oxygen deficient condition (approximately 6%), the lethalities were 40%, 20% with 20 ppm $H_2S$, 600 ppm CO respectively, and was not increased the lethality with 8% CO. Thus, it was confirmed that the $H_2S$, CO had influence to lethal dose, while toluene had low fluence.
We have examined the effects of low concentrations of MNNG, alkylating agent, in survival and mutagenesis in Aspergillus nidulans. Pretreatments of cells with nontoxic and submutagenic doses of MNNG did not reduce the cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of exposure to a high concentration of drug. The results imply that adaptive responses on survival and mutagenesis for MNNG treatments do not occur in Aspergillus nidulans. In the first mitotic cell cycle during germination, the sensitivity to MNNG has been investigated at hourly time interval, and compared with that for UV irradiation. In both UV and MNNG treatments, the sensitivity increased till S cell stage, and decreased while DNA replication continued. Different from that show for UV irradiation, lethality to MNNG reached to the maximum at G2 cell stage.
The mosquito, Aedes albopictus is important vector of humen phatogen such as dengue fever. And Aedes albopictus has widly distribution in oriental regions. This study was conducted to investigate the biological effects of cooper on the development of the Asian tiger mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus (Skuse). Aedes albopictus was affected with pupation ratios, mortalities, and wing lengths of the 3th and 4th instars by exposure to different concentration $CuCl_2$ (0.0, 2.5, 25.0 and 50.0 ppm) for 24 h and 48 h depending on dose and exposure period. The lowest $LC_{50}$ (median lethal concentration) value of $CuCl_2$ was 18.1 ppm at the 3rd instars for 48 h exposure. The pupation ratio of the larvae exposed at 50.0 ppm for 48 h was 14% which was much lower than those exposed to other treatment groups Changes of adult wing length showed significant decreased by Cu treatment. In conclusion, the most prominent effects of high concentration and longer exposure period were to reduce in the survival and pupation rates of larvae and wing length of Ae. albopictus.
This study building materials by relates to human hazard assessment in accordance with the combustion gas SEM, the flame-retardant foam FTIR and cone calorimeter to configure the Forest products of MDF and preservative treated Lauan two kinds of Retardant styrofoam, Styrofoam, Urethane foam and gypsum board four kinds of plastics material by the combustion gas were each analyzed. MDF was burned to the structure of the wood and the glue evenly mixed combustion area preservative treated Lauan, kept constant even in the form of high heat to penetrate deep into the wood flame retardant agents. Retardant styrofoam is due to feed my Dropped dissolved inorganic flame retardant without the fire-stick and confirmed that the weak form of gypsum board, but keep the column. In MDF ammonia ($NH_3$), lethal concentration (750 ppm) compared to 795 ppm, preservative treated Lauan is carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) that was greater than 2.5 times the lethal concentration (100,000 ppm) to 256,965 ppm, the lethal concentration (500 ppm) of hydrogen chloride (HCl). The Urethane greater than 697 ppm, 434 ppm also greatly exceeding the nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) lethal concentration (250 ppm) in Retardant styrofoam and 398 ppm was released. It is confirmed that the human body is extremely harmful gas emitted from most of the materials to be utilized as basic data for evaluating the hazard-specific human future building material.
Entomopathogenic nematodes were effective in the control of the cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica Saunder. P. indica mortality was significantly different depending on nematode species, treatment concentration, and instar. S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain was more effective against P. indica than S. glaseri Dongrae strain, S. longicaudum Nonsan strain, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan isolate, and H. bacteriophora Hamyang strain. When S. carpocapsae was treated with the rate of > 20 infective juveniles (ijs)/larva, mortality was ca. 100% at the 1st-4th instars of P. indica in 72h. $LC_{50}$ of entomopathogenic nematodes were significantly different depending on nematode species. The lowest $LC_{ 50}$ value was obtained by S. carpocapsae with 4.9-8.2 ijs in the 1st-prepupa while the highest $LC_{50}$ by Heterorhabditis sp. with 5.5-21.9 ijs, the shortest LT$_{50}$ value of P. indica was induced by S. carpocapsae when 20 ijs/larva were inoculated. The $LT_{50}$ s were 3.4-9.2h against the 1st-prepupa. The mortality of P. indica in fields was significantly different depending on field condition, nematode concentration, and leaf location. Mortality of P. indica by S. carpocapsae was higher at greenhouse,$ 3$\times$10^{9}$ ijs/ha and upper leaves than at field, 1$\times$10$^{9}$ ijs/ha and lower and middle leaves, respectively.
Effects of temperature and dose-size on infectivity and reproduction of Korean entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema longicaudum Gongju strain were examined. The greater wax mea Galleria mellonella larvae were exposed to 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 infective juveniles/larva in $60{\times}15$ mm petri dishes and kept in $13^{\circ}C$, $18^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$ incubators. Each petri dish contained one larva weighed from 180 to 200 mg. Infectivity was observed everyday for 14 days and reproduction for 30 days. The infectivity of S. longicaudum was more influenced by temperature than by dose-size. Mortalities by S. longicaudum were lower at $13^{\circ}C$ at all concentrations but higher at $24^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ even at lower concentrations, 5 or 10 infective juveniles/larva. Lethal time was also shorter with increasing temperature and dosages. All host larvae died at $24^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ in 2 days at the rate of 160 infective juveniles per host while 83.3% of tested larvae died at $24^{\circ}C$ in 10 days and 90% at $30^{\circ}C$ in 6 days at the rate of 5 infective juveniles. Reproduction was also better with increasing temperature and dosages. The highest number of progenies was obtained at $30^{\circ}C$ in 6 days at the rate of 80 infective juveniles. However, progenies were not produced from cadavers at $13^{\circ}C$. Reproductive period was the shortest at $30^{\circ}C$ of all temperatures by 6 to 9 days. The results indicated that optimum temperatures for infectivity was $24^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ for reproduction.
The susceptibility of the different larval stages of Spodoptera litura to nine insecticides was evaluated using the perilla leaf-dipping method. Median lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) was increased with larval development in the range of 0.5 ppm to 5.6 ppm, 9.9 ppm to 27.9 ppm, 9.6 ppm to 125.1 ppm and 24.3 ppm to 546.6 ppm in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar, respectively. The tolerance ratio (TR), which is the TR of 90 percent lethal concentration (LC/ sub 90/) to the recommended concentration, was 0.04 to 0.8 in the 1 st, 0.2 to 7.5 in the 2nd, 0.7 to 115.3 in the 3rd and 1.2 to 485.4 in the 4th instars. Lower D$LC_{50}$ and DTR, which is the difference between the $LC_{50}$ and the TR of 4th and other instars, respectively, were observed in chlorfenapyr, chlorpyrifos and EPN while higher ones were lufenuron, chlorfluazuron and teflubenzuron. These results mean that insecticides with lower D$LC_{50}$ and DTR are effective in controlling larva of S. litura collected in Milyang, Korea.
