  • This study aims at providing the basic data to help establish the right identity of dental hygienist and develop the work of dental hygienists, and thereby investigating the effect of patients' perception of dental hygienist on their social demand of dental hygienist, by conducting a survey of 300 patients visiting dentists around Busan-Gyeongnam region from April 7, 2012 to April 25, 2012. The collected data is statistically analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science 14.0. SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). First, I analyzed the frequency by suggesting the demographic and descriptive characteristics of data, and conducted t-test and One-Way ANOVA at 5% of significance level to figure out the degree of perception and social demand of dental hygienists depending on customers' reason for visiting dentists, and also conducted regression analysis to find the effect of the perception of dental hygienist on patient's social demand of dental hygienist. The result suggests that as the perception of the dental hygienists' role, the social demand for dental hygienists' image increases, but as perception of dental hygienists' image increases, the social demand of dental hygienists' image decreases. Therefore, it suggests that as the knowledge about dental hygienists increases, patients demand their service more, while the perception of their image lowers the social demand for their image. It turns out that as the knowledge of dental hygienists increase, the social demand for the knowledge also increases.

A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 212 high school teachers in Gwangju, South Korea. The questionnaire contained subject's general characteristics, images of dental hygienists, and career advice. We performed an independent t-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, and logistic regression analysis using the IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 software. Using a five-point scale, the average of all the dental hygienist images was 3.50, with personal images receiving the most positive rating at 3.83 and social images receiving the least positive rating at 2.86. The images of dental hygienists were significantly more positive in instances where the subjects recognized the dental hygienist or received treatment within one year. There were positive correlations among different kinds of images. Through multiple regression analysis, occupational images were associated with business and social images. Business images were associated with occupational and personal images. Personal images were associated with business images, especially in cases where the subjects recognized the dental hygienist. Social images were associated with occupational images, especially in cases where subjects received treatment within one year. Through logistic regression analysis, career advice was associated with social and occupational images. Therefore, our study provides suggestions on how to enhance positive recognition of social images of dental hygienists.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the formation of dental hygienist images based on the pathways of obtaining occupational information and to establish a foundation for the correct perception and positive promotion of the dental hygienist profession. Methods: A survey was distributed to 305 college preparatory students in the metropolitan area. The questionnaire consisted of 34 items, including general characteristics(3 items), pathway-related questions(3 items), dental hygienist image-related question(2 1items), application-related questions(2 items), and admission-related questions(5 items). The images of dental hygienists based on general characteristics, perception pathways, and admission were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The survey results from all participants showed that the overall image of dental hygienists was 3.75 points. Personal image scored the highest at 4.18 points, while social image was the lowest at 3.20 points(p<0.05). The overall image of dental hygienists was higher for the 'online' group (3.88) compared to the 'offline' group, and statistically significant differences were observed among groups in overall, personal, and professional images(p<0.05). The overall image of dental hygienists was higher for those who learned offline (3.87), and the only significant difference between groups was seen in the personal image. When it came to admission, the 'admitted' students gave a higher overall score (4.00) compared to 'non-admitted' students (3.64), with significance found in all areas except for social image (p<0.05). Conclusion: It is believed that effective utilization of online pathways can inform more people about the importance and expertise of dental hygienists, thereby contributing to promoting oral health and enhancing the perception of the profession. Properly valuing and educating about the role of dental hygienists through promotion and education can help improve the image of the profession.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand how a dental hygienist is viewed by students in terms of both image and job /employment perception using structural equations. This together with the incorporation of available online information would help in collating the necessary data for ensuring adequate manpower of dental hygienists' in the future. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 24.0 and AMOS Graphics 21.0 statistics packages. It was found that students who perceive employment positively have a positive image of a dental hygienist even if a new infectious disease were to occur. They appreciate that a negative image of a dental hygienist's job during an epidemic could cause a negative perception of employment as a dental hygienist. Those who think negatively of the internet as a source of information believe that the internet has a lot of false information, is harmful, promotes anxiety, and has been shown to promote negative perceptions about employment as a dental hygienist. Those who think positively of internet information think that dental hygienists are susceptible to infection and can transmit infection, which has been shown to negatively affect their perception of employment. In conclusion, it is important to form an image of a dental hygienist through the recognition of the correct internet information in the period of new infectious diseases.
