  • This study aims at providing the basic data to help establish the right identity of dental hygienist and develop the work of dental hygienists, and thereby investigating the effect of patients' perception of dental hygienist on their social demand of dental hygienist, by conducting a survey of 300 patients visiting dentists around Busan-Gyeongnam region from April 7, 2012 to April 25, 2012. The collected data is statistically analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science 14.0. SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). First, I analyzed the frequency by suggesting the demographic and descriptive characteristics of data, and conducted t-test and One-Way ANOVA at 5% of significance level to figure out the degree of perception and social demand of dental hygienists depending on customers' reason for visiting dentists, and also conducted regression analysis to find the effect of the perception of dental hygienist on patient's social demand of dental hygienist. The result suggests that as the perception of the dental hygienists' role, the social demand for dental hygienists' image increases, but as perception of dental hygienists' image increases, the social demand of dental hygienists' image decreases. Therefore, it suggests that as the knowledge about dental hygienists increases, patients demand their service more, while the perception of their image lowers the social demand for their image. It turns out that as the knowledge of dental hygienists increase, the social demand for the knowledge also increases.

  • This study was conducted using structured questionnaire to 103 dental hygienists who agreed to research among dental hygienists working at Ulsan-based dental clinics in an attempt to analyze the impact of dental roles and social support on emotional labor. Statements of collected data were performed on t-test and ons-way ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression using the SPSS Statistics ver 18.0 for windows program. The study found that the higher role conflicts and greater role ambiguity in relation to direct trade and emotional labor, the higher the intensity of emotional labor, and the more social support, the lower the intensity of emotional labor. The emotional labor of dental hygienists can be solved at a personal level by trying to improve their relationship with members at a dentist's office and by making clear and more professional work segmentation according to their working characteristics. This will help develop a plan to manage the emotional labor of dental hygienists.

In this study, 214 newly appointed dental hygienists in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, were surveyed from September to October, 2013 through the structured questionnaires, and the collected data were electro-statistically computerized under SPSS 17.0 program and analyzed based on the frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results of analysis showed that the dental hygienists with less than 3-year experience had the lower role conflict compared to other groups in relation to the job stress factors based on the clinical experience, and there was a significant difference. A negative(-) relation was found among the job stress, organization commitment, and job satisfaction, while a positive(+) relationship with the turnover intention was found. Moreover, it turned out that the job stress of newly appointed dental hygienists had a significant effect on the organization effectiveness. Thus, it is considered necessary to explore the specific measures that can help reduce the turnover rate of newly appointed dental hygienists and improve their adaptation to the organization in a more effective manner.

  • Advances in the dental medical field now provide high quality medical service, and thus, it has become important to identify the role of dental hygienists. However, the professional status of dental hygienists has not been acknowledged, and this has resulted in problems such as dissatisfaction and high turnover rates at dental hospitals. This study was undertaken to identify factors that influence dental hygienist job satisfaction and turnover rates. To achieve this we used a synthetic approach incorporating individual (optimism), job (professionalism), and organizational (perceived organizational support) characteristics. Our results showed that optimism, professionalism, and perceived organizational support were positively related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, job satisfaction was found to be negatively related to turnover intension and to partially mediate the effect between POS and turnover intention. We believe the results of this study could be used by dental hospitals to address dental hygienist dissatisfaction and high turnover rates.
