  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transmission of candida in denture by dental polishing lathe. Materials and Methods: Maxillary complete dentures made from the same model were infected with Candida albicans. Polishing wheels were keep in various chlorhexidine solution and distilled water for an hour. The infected dentures were polished by prepared dental polishing lathe with sterile pumice and distilled water. And then sterile maxillary complete dentures were polished with same method. Polishing surface was wiped with a cotton swab and the sample was regrown for checking Candida albicans. Results: All polishing wheel with chlorhexidine resist fungal infection. But the polishing wheel with distilled water is infected with Candida albicans. Conclusion: A chlorhexidine is highly efficient in fungal infection prevention on dental polishing lathe.

The infected dentures were polished by dental polishing lathe with sterile pumice and distilled water. And then sterile maxillary complete dentures were polished with same method. Polishing surface was wiped with a cotton swab and the sample was checked for Candida albicans. The polishing wheel at room temperature was checked for Candida albicans every 24 hours for 3 days. Results: A considerable number of Candida was found on the polished sterile dentures. And the Candida albicans in polishing wheel was detected at up to two days. Conclusion: An anti-infection measure is urgently needed when dental polishing lathe is used for denture polishing, because of the possibility of fungal infection.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of surface polishing and fabrication method on the flexural strength of temporary restorative resin. Materials and Methods: Each of four fabrication methods was used to make 30 temporary restorative resin specimens and the specimens were divided into two groups depending on whether they were polished by mechanical polishing. Specimens were stored in 37℃ thermostat for 24 hours. Flexural strength was measured using a universal testing machine (UTM). The data obtained through the experiment were analyzed with Two-way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test and Paired t-test. Results: CAD/CAM milling group showed the highest flexural strength regardless of surface polishing. In decreasing order, the flexural strength of the other fabrication method group was as follows SLA 3D printing, DLP 3D printing, and Conventional method group. Conclusion: Surface polishing did not affect flexural strength of the temporary restorative resin (P > 0.05). However, there were statistically significant differences in flexural strength depending on fabrication method (P < 0.05).

  • Although the finishing of ceramic restorations affects overall results of prosthetic procedures, the importance of finishing procedures has been underestimated. Finishing procedures have influence on the esthetics, and strength of ceramic restorations, and attrition of opposite tooth. For achieving the appropriate results of these factors, the overall understanding related to the finishing procedures of ceramic restoration is necessary.

  • This study aimed to compare the color stability and surface roughness of three-dimensional (3D) printing resin according to polishing methods. 3D-printed resin specimens were fabricated at TC-80DP (Graphy, Seoul, Korea) with a stereolithography 3D printer, and the specimens were divided into three groups, each of which was not polished, was polished using Enhance®, and was polished using a Sof-LexTM disc. The CIE L*a*b* value and the surface roughness of each group were measured and immersed in artificial saliva and orange juice after 0, 1, 7, 30, and 60 days, and the color difference (ΔE*) was calculated. As a result of the study, no noticeable color change was observed in artificial saliva, but a noticeable color change was demonstrated in orange juice after 60 days of immersion, and the difference was significant. In the Sof-LexTM group, surface roughness according to the solution was found to be significantly higher in the orange juice than that in artificial saliva. No significant difference in color change was found according to the polishing method, but surface roughness was significantly lower in the Sof-LexTM group than both that of the unpolished group and that of the Enhance® group. Nevertheless, all groups exhibited clinically acceptable properties regardless of their higher surface roughness than the threshold for plaque accumulation. Overall, this study recommends utilizing Sof-LexTM for polishing 3D printing resin when used in primary anterior tooth coverage.
