It is widely accepted that the shape and structure of bone are closely related to the activity of attached muscle. Numerous clinical and animal experimental studies indicated the significant effects of masticatory muscle function on maxillofacial morphology. Recently, the development of ultrasonography has spread throughout different fields of medicine. In the clinical examinations, ultrasonography is a convenient, inexpensive technique to apply with accurate and reliable results. The aim of this study is to assess the thickness of the masseter muscle and its correlation to maxillofacial skeleton by examining 35 male and 15 female dental students at Kangnung National University. The masseter muscle thickness of the subjects were measured by ultrasonographic scanning with a 7.5MHz linear probe, and their maxillofacial morphology were investigated by lateral cephalometric radiographs. The relationship between the masseter muscle thickness and maxillofacial morphology of normal adult was statistically analyzed, and the following results were obtained. 1. The average thickness of male masseter muscle was 13.8${\pm}$1.71mm in the relaxed state and 14.8${\pm}$1.77mm at maximal clenching state, while that of female was 11.6${\pm}$1.58mm and 12.4${\pm}$1.47mm, respectively. Ethnic difference in thickness of the masseter muscle and maxillofacial skeleton was found when the results of many researchers were compared with those of this study. 2. The thickness of the masseter muscle in both sexes increased significantly at maximal clenching state than in relaxed state(P<0.05). 3. The masseter muscle thickness of male was greater than that of female both in the relaxed state and maximal clenching states(P<0.05). 4. In males, the thickness of the masseter muscle was negatively correlated with the mandibular plane angle and positively correlated with the mandibular ramus height and anterior cranial base length(P<0.05). It may suggest that the male with thicker masseter muscle has smaller facial divergence. 5. No significant correlation was found between the masseter muscle thickness and maxillofacial morphology in females(P<0.05). Therefore, these data suggest that ultrasonography can add valuable information to the conventional examinations of masseter muscle function.

This study was conducted to reveal the relationship between the oral health status and their Knowledges about the oral health of the freshman of colleges in Taegu city. The evaluation for the oral health status through the oral examinations and their analysis of their knowledges on the periodontal disease were done on 216 males and 205 females from 1st to 30th April, 1993. The obtained results were as follows: The oral health status of 421 subject showed that 35.7% was good, 59.1% fair, and 6.2% poor, respectively. In case of the oral health status of females, 41.9% was good and 4.4% poor, and then in males 27.8% was good, 7.8% poor. The oral health status of the females was better than that of the males(p=0.006). The 52.1% among the good oral health status group answered that the dental plaque is the bacterial membrane causing dental disease, and the 23.1% among the poor oral health status group answered same as the above. The 91.8% among the good oral health status group answered that the periodontal diseases can be prevented, and the same answer came out from 15.4% of the poor group. It was found that the better oral health status group had the better knowledges about periodontal disease(p=0.001). For the question about their experiences in scaling the 30.1% of good oral health status group and the 23.1% of poor group answered that scaling is very helpful to periodontal health(p=0.001). About the experience of the education for tooth brushing, the 53.2% of good oral health status group and the 7.6% of poor group had the experiences to receive the education for tooth brushing(p=0.001). About the frequency and the time of tooth brushing, the 53.4% of good oral health status group brushed their teeth more then 3 times a day and 41.8% of good group brushed their teeth after every meal(p=0.001). The result of multiple regression analysis according to the simplified oral health index indicated that the variable having an effect on the oral health status was the tooth brushing frequency, knowledge of periodontal disease prevention, experience in education of tooth brushing and time of tooth brushing(p=0.001).
The purpose of this study was to delve into the factors associated with the oral health promotion behaviors of college students. The subjects in this study were 453 students who attended three different colleges in Gyeonggi province. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSSWIN 12.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning the basic oral health care of college students, 54.1 percent had ever visited dental clinics over the last year, and 53.4 percent hadn't received any preventive treatment during the same period of time. 2. As to their self-perception of oral health status, 80.1 percent didn't find themselves to be in good oral health. 3. Regarding the influence of their general characteristics, their self-efficacy was statistically significantly different according to their gender (p = .022). Their control of oral health varied statistically significantly with their major(p = .000), and whether or not they smoked (p = .004) made a statistically significant difference to that as well. Their oral health knowledge differed statistically significantly with their gender (p = .000), major(p = .000) and age group(p = .000), and whether or not they smoked(p = .006) made a statistically significant difference to that as well. 4. As for correlation among the variables, better oral health promotion behaviors were found among those whose self-efficacy was higher, whose control of oral health was better and who had more knowledge on oral health. 5. Preventive treatment, control of oral health and self-efficacy were identified as the variable that affected their oral health promotion behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the vital signs and anxiety reactions during scaling to patients who had received the dental hygiene treatment at department of Dental Hygiene in a university. A total of 189 patients were participated in the study. The level of anxiety was assessed through a dental anxiety questionnaire consisting of dental fear survey scale and dental anxiety survey scale. The vital signs were measured before and after scaling. The obtained results were as follows. The level of anxiety before scaling was 2.16 and after scaling was 1.96. This was significantly higher in women. The pulse and systolic blood pressure after scaling significantly decreased from 77.48 times to 74.36 times per minute and from 124.96 mmHg to 122.50 mmHg respectively. These changes are within the normal physiological variations. Individual changes in respiration, pulse, blood pressure, body temperature are affected by age, gender and previous dental experience, but previous scaling experience. The level of anxiety was significantly explained by respiration before scaling and pulse after scaling. As a result, scaling was associated with dental anxiety reactions and changes in vital signs.

For each course, systematic reviews were made by subject name, core competency, achievement goals, lecture hours, weekly themes, and learning goals. Three experts in the dental hygiene evaluated and analyzed the association of competency and goals. Results: Each course was operated by the goal from one to twenty two competencies of dental hygiene. Achieving one item of competency in a course required 13 hours on the average from minimum 2 hours to maximum 30 hours. More than 20 courses were operated and more than 900 hours were necessary for achieving the competency. The competency included the contents of 'Be able to utilize basic medical and dental knowledge in dental hygiene care and patient care' among the dental hygiene competencies. Conclusions: Competency based dental hygiene education will provide theoretical background for defining the identity of dental hygienist as a health care worker and to encourage professionals who contribute to the recognition of healthy society. Further research should be continued for improving the competency-based dental hygiene curriculum and education methods for implementing the curriculum within the paradigm of health care services.
The aim of this study is to investigate the detection rate of putative periodontopathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Actiobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, related to cardiovascular diseases(CVD). Plaques were sampled from 15 subjects (4 sites of denture base and/or tooth) with sterilized explorers and were transported in IX PBS. The detection of periodontopathogens was performed by polymerase chain reaction with species-specific primers based on 16S rDNA. The PCR products were cloned into pGEM-T easy vector and its nucleotides were sequenced in order to confirm the specificity. Our data showed that the detection rate of P. gingivalis and T forsythia in denture base of edentulous patients was 25% and 75%, respectively. And the detection rate of P. gingivalis and T.forsythia in denture base of patient having one more tooth was 91%. The results indicate that plaque of denture base may serve as reservoirs of oral bacteria related to CVD.
