Stratigraphy has been renewedly set up and the evolution of tectonic events related to basin formation has been exam-ined on the basis of fault-slip data analysis in the Tertiary Eoil and Waeup basins of the southeastern part of Korea. First of all, field mapping was carried out in detail for Tertiary formations and then paleostress analysis were peformed with more than 400 fault slip data collected from 11 sites in the Tertiary formations and the Yucheon Group. It is judged that both the Eoil and Waeup basins filled up with Tertiary deposits might be simultaneously formed in separate locations. The Janggi Group in the Eoil basin is divided into following stratigraphic units in ascending order: Gampo Conglomerte, Hongdeok Basalt, Nodongri Conglomerate and Yeondang Basalt, and the Bomkori Group in the Waeup basin: Waeupri Tuff; Andongri Conglomerate, Yongdongri Tuff and Hoamri Volcanic Breccia. Paleostress analysis by using striated faults reveals five sequential tectonic events: (1) NW-SE transtension (event I), (2) NW-SE transpression (event IIl), (3) NE-SW pure extension (event III), (4) N-S transpression (event IV) and (5) E-W pure compression (event V). Therefore, five sequential tectonic movements are closely associated with the formation and evolution of the Tertiary basins in the study area: tectonic event I of NW-SE extension is related to formation of the Tertiary basins during the late Oligocene to the Early Miocene, tectonic events II, III and IV caused the termination of the Tertiary basin opening and the crustal uplift in the study area, and tectonic event V upheaved the east coast or Korean Peninsula with compressive stress due to intense subduction of the Pacific plate into Asian continent since the Early Pliocene.

Estuary of River Nakdong(in south-eastern coast of Korean Peninsula) is the most representative site of delta in Korea. This study is to elucidate morpho-structural background associated with the embayment area and sedimentation processes, having allowed development of the delta. In this area, Great morphological trait of the embayment area had been formulated by differential erosion exploiting regional fracture system(NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, E-W,...) of tectonic origin. For this reason, outline of the embayment basin shows quadrangular plan, and ridges and dissected valleys of neighbouring mountains draw frequently morphological lineament pattern. At the last glacial age when delta deposit had not yet filled the actual embayment basin of the Nakdong, mechanical weathering(frost shattering) and mass-movement processes had provided detritus materials composed of blocks, boulders on bottom the basin. With the postglacial transgression in the Holocene, the basin had been submerged, then began to be filled with fluvio-marine deposits from Kimhae-Yangsan area toward actual estuarine zone, so that Nakdong delta have been formed. Analysis and synthesis of from hundreds of boring data of the delta area reveal that progression of delta formation have been accompanied with the development of barrier islands. If the barrier islands had grown as forming a plural row, then their intervals have posteriorly filled with another fluvio-marine deposits. Besides, it shows that delta deposits are essentially alluvial. However, at the periphery of the delta, intervention of fine marine deposits is frequently found.
Recently, the grounded electrical-source airborne transient electromagnetic (GREATEM) system with high power source was introduced to achieve deeper investigation depth and to overcome high noise level. Although the GREATEM is a transient electromagnetic system using a long grounded wire as the transmitter, GREATEM data have been interpreted with 1D earth models because 2D or 3D modeling and inversion of vast airborne data are complicated and expensive to calculate. Generally, 1D inversion is subsequently applied to every survey point and combining 1D images together forms the stitched conductivity-depth image. However, the stitched models often result in abrupt variations in neighboring models. To overcome this problem, laterally constrained inversion (LCI) has been developed in inversion of ATEM data, which can yield layered sections with lateral smooth transitions. In this study, we analysed the GREATEM data through 1D numerical modeling for a curved grounded wire source. Furthermore, we developed a laterally constrained inversion scheme for continuous GREATEM data based on a layered earth model. All 1D data sets and models are inverted as one system, producing layered sections with lateral smooth transitions. Applying the developed LCI technique to the GREATEM data, it was confirmed that the laterally constrained inversion can provide laterally smooth model sections that reflect the layering of the survey area effectively.

Lau basin of south Pacific, as an active back arc basin, is promising area bearing seafloor massive hydrothermal deposit that is located in a subduction zone between the Pacific ocean plate and Indo-Australian continental plate. Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute tracked from 2004 to 2006 the hydrothermal activity to the extension of the northeast Lau Basin, targeting seamount. hydrothermal activity by tracking was found hydrothermal evidences. In this study, Marine seismic survey was carried out in the Lau basin seamount of the possibility of hydrothermal deposit. In particular, Marine magnetic survey and seismic survey was carried out at the same time in TA-12 seamount and noise characteristics were found in the seamount. the main process of data processing is Bandpass filter, FK filter, Deconvolution for noise attenuation such backscatter and multiple reflections. the migration is performed to compensate for reflection points followed by seamount of a slope. In this study, bedrock and upper strata could be identified and in the Future, the comparative method with Multi Beam Echo Sounder(MBES) are likely to derive the correct velocity model, the marine magnetic survey results should be considered.

Sediment core samples recovered from the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS)-97 area were divided into two or three units according to their distinct changes in sediment colors and chemical and physical properties. Analyses of radiolarian faunas in the sediments and $^{10}Be$ ratios in each unit were performed to reveal stratigraphic and paleoceanographic history of the study area. In the upper part of the sediments, Tertiary radiolarians were mixed at various proportions with Quaternary assemblages probably by reworking process of bottom current and benthic animals. Dissolution of radiolarians was severe in deeper depth and in the Unit III, only few of the fragments of corroded Tertiary radiolarians were detectable. The mid layer of the Unit I belonged to Collosphaera invaginata Zone, the time period of 0.21 Ma. The Unit II belonged to Collosphaera tuberosa Zone with the time period younger than 0.42 Ma which was observed above the Stylatractus universus Zone. The Unit III is assigned to Tertiary, which is younger than the Late Eocene. Composition analyses of radiolarian assemblage and $^{10}Be$ ratio data indicated hiatus periods of more than 3 My between late of Middle Miocene and Pliocene resulting from erosion and dissolution caused by Antarctic Bottom Water. Stratigraphic evidence from radiolaria was well correlated with $^{10}Be$ data. Sedimentation rate during Quaternary can be suggested as 0.15-0.5 mm per 1000 years. Dominance of warm-water radiolaria species and the results reflected minimum climatic changes of tropical conditions.
Seismic reflection profiles from the eastern continental margin of Korea delineate three major Neogene sedimentary basins perched on the shelf and slope regions: Pohang-Youngduk, Mukho and Hupo basins. The stratigraphic and structural analyses demonstrate that the formation and filling of these basins were intimately controlled by two phases of regional tectonism: transtensional and subsequent contractional deformations. In the Oligocene to Early Miocene, back-arc opening of the East Sea induced extensional shear deformation with dextral strike-slip movement along right-stepping Hupo and Yangsan faults. During the transtensional deformation, the Pohang-Youngduk Basin was formed by pull-apart opening between two strike-slip faults; in the northern part, block faulting caused to form the Mukho Basin between basement highs. As a result of the back-arc closure, the stress field was inverted into compression at the end of the Middle Miocene. Under the compressive regime, two episodes (Late Miocene and Early Pliocene) of regional deformation led to the destruction and partial uplift of the basin-filling sequences. In particular, during the second episode of compressive deformation, the Hupo fault was reactivated with an oblique-slip sense, which resulted in an opening of the Hupo Basin as a half-graben on the downthrown fault block.

Thermal maturation and diagenesis of the Gyeongsang Supergroup in the Euiseong area are studied by means of organic geochemical techniques and illite crystallinity. Black mudrocks of the Singdong Group contain organic matter of $0.5{\~}2{\%}$ derived from higher plants, being compared to type Ⅲ. Thermal maturity of organic matter reached dry gas generation phase. Tmax by Rock Eval pyrolysis varies between $578^{\circ}C$ and $593^{\circ}C$ regardless of stratigraphic position and localities, and vitrinite reflectance is about 2.9 and $3{\~}4{\%}Ro$ in the Jinju and the Nagdong Formations, respectively. Vitrinite reflectance measurements indicate that the maturation is mainly due to burial and partly to be affected by post-depositional intrusions. Illite crystallinity values from the Nagdong, Hasandong, Jiniu Formations and part of the Iljig Formation are plotted around the boundary between diagenesis and anchizone, indicating dry gas generation stage. However, the values are not dependent on stratigraphic position. The values from the Iljig, Hupyeongdong, Geomgog, and Sagog Formations fall into the range of anchizone, probably resulted from the post-depositional intrusions which occur locally. Both organic geochemical and illite crystallinity data indicate thermal maturation stage of dry gas generation. Diagenesis of the Gyeongsang strata is mostly controlled by burial, and partly affected by post-depositional intrusions. Paleotemperature of the Sindong Group is estimated at around $200^{\circ}C$ on the basis of illite crystallinity.
Volcanic glass shard, which shows relatively homogeneous chemical composition in volcanic eruption materials, is used to determine ages of tephra layers and then to correlate tephra layers each other for understanding of evolution of Quaternary geomorphology. For reducing processing errors in age determination and correlation of units, amorphous glass shard should be separated carefully from soil sample through laboratory procedures such as washing, separation, and identification. Introduction of these processes in detail could be reduced errors in tephrochronology by using volcanic glass shard.

Biogenic opal crash at about 6.7 Ma was identified at both IODP Site U1447 and NGHP Site 17 in the Andaman Sea. The different biogenic opal content and general variation pattern between two sites may be attributed to the different concentration of analytical reagent and sedimentation rate estimated by the different chronological approaches. Nevertheless, this study suggests that the biogenic opal crash in the Andaman Sea is closely related to the restriction of Indonesian Throughflow and to the decreasing strength of Indian summer monsoon during the late Miocene, both of which resulted in the reduction of nutrient supply.
A commercial gas field was found in the southwestern continental shelf of the Ulleung Basin, East Sea in the late 1990s. To develop additional gas field, an exploration well was drilled through the coarse infill of submarine canyon near the gas field, but it was uneconomic to develop hydrocarbons. Using newly acquired deep seismic reflection and previous well data, we have identified additional geological structure which has hydrocarbon potentials below submarine canyons in the southwestern margin of the basin. Based on the interpretation of the deep seismic reflection and well data, the sequences of the study area can be classified into the syn-rift megasequence(MS1), post-rift megasequence(MS2), syn-compressional megasequence(MS3), and post-compressional megasequence(MS4) in relation to the tectonic events. MS1, deposited simultaneously with the basin formation before the middle Miocene, is characterized by chaotic seismic facies with low- to moderate-amplitude and low frequency reflections. MS2 comprises laterally continuous, low- to moderate-amplitude reflections, showing progradational stacking patterns due to high rates of sediment supply during basin expansion in the middle Miocene. MS3 is mainly composed of continuous reflections with high amplitude and moderate- to high-frequency which are interpreted as coarse-grained sediments. The coarse-grained sediments of MS3 sequence is widely truncated by several submarine canyons which filled with fine-grained sediment of MS4 to form a stratigraphic trap of hydrocarbon. Therefore, the reservoir and seal of the hydrocarbon trap in the study area are coarse-grained sediment of MS3 and submarine canyon filled with fine-grained sediment of MS4, respectively. A flat-spot seismic anomaly, which may indicate the presence of hydrocarbon, is observed within the stratigraphic trap.
