  • This study researched changes over time regarding the location and spatial characteristics of modern meteorological stations, and examined the characteristics of modern meteorological station construction using the location and spatial characteristics of the Busan Meteorological Station. First, meteorological stations were located in port areas, and then moved to high altitude areas for stable meteorological observation beginning in the transition phase. Here, office buildings and residences were joined, but were separated due to the increase in functions from the stabilization phase. Second, as for spatial composition, in the establishment phase, existing buildings were used, and the scale of newly constructed buildings differed according to time and area. However, after the Japan-Korea Annexation, with increased funds and increased observation equipment, floor plans subdivided by function started to appear. In the stabilization phase, space was subdivided with redundancy due to the increase in functions. In the wartime transition phase, '一' shaped floor plans with redundancy became the norm. Meanwhile, the location of the maritime customs where the first meteorological observations took place after the opening of the ports, and the location and construction of the Busan Temporary Observatory built in the meteorological observation transition phase (1905) were investigated. Also, through the investigation of the Busan Meteorological Observatory, newly constructed before 1934, the location and spatial characteristics of modern era meteorological observatories were studied.

  • As the first step to estimate the potential natural vegetation distribution of the globe, the best spherical interpolation method was developed to the temperature and precipitation which have close relation to the distribution pattern of world natural vegetation. For developing the interpolation method, a named Light Climatic Dataset composed of 1,060 stations around the globe was randomly divided into halves of feeding side and target side. The discrepancy between the observed and estimated values at the target stations was compared with combinations of parameters and methods. The estimated values were calculated to each combination which is all-out, constant radius and constant station methods in the selection of the feeding stations, n square reciprocal and negative exponential functions in weighting function of distance between feeding stations and each target, and oval weighting in direction of the feeding stations from each target. As a result, it turned out that the spherical interpolation with negative exponential weighting function fed from the constant radius stations ovally weighed yields the best estimates both for temperature and for precipitation. The parameters for temperature are $30^{\circ}$ in constant radius, 0.78 in negative exponential function and 0.4 in oval weighting, and for precipitation are $30^{\circ}$, 0.53 and 0.4, respectively.

  • The optimum global natural vegetation mapping(GNVM) system was selected as a series of the study to estimate potential forest area of the globe. To select the system, three types of GNVM systems which are simple system with Light Climatic Dataset(LCD), altitude-allowed system with LCD and altitude-allowed system with Heavy Climatic Dataset(HCD) were established and compared. The three GNVM systems spherically interpolate such spotty climate data as those observed at weather stations the world over onto $1^{\circ}{\times}1^{\circ}$ grid points, product vegetation type classification, and produce a potential natural vegetation(PNV) map and a PNV area. As a result of comparison with three GNVM systems, altitude-allowed LCD system represented natural vegetation distribution better than other versions. The difference between the simple system versus the one with altitude allowance indicated that the simple version tends to over-represent the warmer climate areas and under-represent cold and hostile climate areas. In the difference between altitude-allowed versions of LCD and HCD, HCD version tended to overestimate moist climate areas and to underestimate dry climate areas.

  • The frequency band above 20GHz is the great radio resource which has not been used. But the attenuation by atmosphere is so large that the radio systems using this frequency band must have shorter hops. There are few studies of optimal hop length for these millimetric wave radio links in Korea. In this paper we analyzed the millimetric wave propagation characteristics in atmosphere and estimated rain attenuation which have a great effect on hop length. Furthermore, we present a rainfall rate(mm/h) of the cities including Seoul and Pusan using the data collected by several rainfall gauges. This paper presents a method of obtaining the optimum hop length for millimer wave radio links based on the rain rate date.

  • Recently the pysically based precipitation model was developed by Geogakakos and Bras(1984) for the storm event. This is a modified version of the model. In a different way from the model, in this paper, it is emphasized that the hyderometeor size distribution(HSD)is subject to rainfall intensity and effects on the productivity of precipitation. The to HSD functions are applied to the equation of the outflow after mass through the cloud top and base, products of rainfall rate at the ground level, storage of cloud layer. As an input we put the meterological data observed at Chonju in Korea in our models and adjust the parameters included in it. The result show that in the model there is significant deviation between the hourly calculated rainfall rate and the observed data, while it is very small in the our model based on the two HSD.

  • In general, attenuation at frequencies over 20GHz is mainly due to absorption by satmospheric gases, rain, and snow. Among this factors rain become an important limiting factor. Rain attenuation is highly influenced by rainfall-intensity and it varies over time and space. Thus it is requeired to obtain spatial and temporal data of rainfall-intensity for precise prediction of rainfall attenuation. In this paper, rainfall intensity of thiry-two measurement sites in South Korea excluding JeiJdo Islands over recent ten years is obtained and the regional relation between rainfall-intensity and percent of time is analyzed. Also we present the new method about rainfall-intensity cumulative distribution.

  • The objectives of this study are to adopt a snowmelt model for coupling a rainfall-runoff model and to study snowmelt effects for long-term runoff analysis on the northeast mountaneous area in Korea. The NWS temperature-index snowmelt model was selected and tested on the 1,059+,6 km$^2$ Naerinchen basin. It can be observed that the time variations of the computed areal extents of snow cover from the model are well agreement with those of the observe station snowfall records on the Inje meteorological station. It is also evident that the computed soil water contents and river flows indicate quite different behaviors with or without snowmelt model. It is concluded that the snowmelt model works well and the snowmelt effects for multi-decadal river flow computations are important on the study area.
