  • The experimental research on a high-altitude environment simulation of space launch vehicle is important for securing independent technologies with launching space vehicles and completing missions. This study selected an altitude of 65 km for the experiment environment where it exceeded Mach number of 6 after the launch of Korean Space Launch Vehicle(KSLV-II). Shock tunnel was used to replicate the flight condition. After flow establishment, in order to confirm aerodynamic characteristics and normal and oblique shockwaves, the flow verification was carried out by measuring stagnation pressure and heat flux of a forebody model, and shockwave stand-off distance of a hemispherical model. In addition, a shock-free technique to recover free-stream condition has been developed and verified. From the results of the three verification tests, it was confirmed that the flow was replicated with the error of about ${\pm}3%$. The error between the slope angle of inclined shockwave of the scaled down transition section model using the shock-free shape and the slope angle of the horizontal plate model, and between the theoretical and the experimental value of the static pressure of the model were confirmed to be 2% and 1%, respectively. As a result, the efficiency of the shockwave cancellation technique has been verified.

  • This study analyzed the cause for mooring chain cut in a naval ship moored, in preparation for a typhoon approach, to a buoy in a shelter. The result of the analysis led to a very interesting fact. That is, while officers usually understood the cut results from the fact that the wind and the tide were stronger than what the mooring chain can hold, according to the study, it was analyzed the impact power at the point where the mooring chain and the ship's body met was a main factor in the cut. Also, it was confirmed that the analytic result of the study is more logical from the point of mathematical analysis and that the cut corresponds to what the then-witnesses stated about the situation.

  • In this study, the dynamic analysis is performed fur predicting the transmitted force to flexible human body induced by prototype HIF(High Impulsive force) device operation, which is partially assembled by major parts. A beam-mass model and a shear-structure model are used for the flexible mount structure and their dynamic behavior are investigated by experimental results under rigid/flexible mount conditions using a general purpose device. From the test result of prototype device in rigid mount condition, the transmitted force to human body which can not be measured directly, is estimated based on the proved mount structure model.

  • This paper presents a study on the analysis of impact responses taking into account sensor dynamics. The contact force between impacting bodies is modelled by using Hertz force-displacement law and linear damping function. Since the real impact force and acceleration at the contact surface of two colliding bodies are measured indirectly by the sensors, the measured outputs can be a little different from the real impact responses. Therefore, in this study, the importance of consideration of sensor dynamics in the impact problems of two colliding bodies is emphasized. In order to verify the appropriateness of the proposed contact force model, the drop type impact test using two kinds of sensors is carried out. Through the numerical analysis and experiment, the effect of sensor dynamics and characteristics on the contact force model is investigated.

  • A three dimensional finite model of a human neck has been developed in an effort to study the mechanics of cervical spin while subjected to vertical impact. This model consisting of the vertebrae from C1 through C7 including posterior element and ligaments was constructed by 2mm thick transverse CT cross-sections and X-ray film taken at lateral side. Geometrical nonlinearity was also considered for the large deformation on the disc. ABAQUS package was used for calculation and its results were verified comparing with responses of a model under static loading condition with published in-vitro experimental data. There were more cervical fracture in the restrained (compression) mode than in the nonrestrained (flexion-compression and extension-compression) mode. Upper cervical(C1-C2) injuries were observed under compression-extension modes, while lower cervical injuries occurred undjer compression-flexion modes. Posterior ligament distraction without bony damage at the upper cervical spin(C1-C2) were observed secondary to C5-C7 trauma in compression-flexion modes.

  • To successfully explore the moon by lunar lander, it is essential to guarantee the safe landing of lunar lander. Therefore, efficient shock absorption system of lunar lander should be designed in order to reduce landing impact force. Also, for more practical design of lunar lander, it is important to consider the effect of lunar regolith. In the line of thought, finite element model of lunar lander considering the effect of lunar regolith is developed. To reduce landing impact force, optimization of shock absorption system for lunar lander has been carried out. In optimization, sequential approximate optimization method based on meta-model is used. Through the result of optimization, it is verified that landing impact force on lunar lander can be efficiently reduced by the present optimization procedure.

  • In this study the occlusion of dural-sac, the outer membrane of spinal cord in the lumbar region, was quantitatively analyzed using one motion segment finite element model. Occlusion was quantified by calculating cross sectional area change of dural-sac far different compressive impact duration(loading rate) due to bony fragment at the posterior wall of the cortical shell in vertebral body. Dural-sac was occluded most highly in the range of 8∼12 msec impact duration by the bony fragment intruding into the spinal canal. t=400 msec case 4% cross sectional area change was calculated, which is the same as the cross sectional area change under 6 kN of static compressive loading.

  • The impulse response functions (force-strain relations) for Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams are considered. The response of a beam to a transverse impact force is numerically obtained with the convolution approach using the impulse response function obtained by Laplace transform. Using this relation, the impact force history is determined in the time domain and results are compared with those from Hertz's contact law. The parameters of timpact force model are identified using the recovered force and compared with the Hertz's contact model. In order to verify the proposed algorithm, measurements were done using an impact hammer and a steel ball drop test and these results are also compared with the simulated values.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical investigation of the landing impact characteristics of sport shoes to the landing mode. In most court sport activities, jumping and landing are fundamental motions, and the landing motion is largely composed of forefoot and rearfoot landing modes. Since the landing impact may, but frequently, lead to unexpected injuries of players, the investigation of its characteristics and the sport shoes design for reducing it are of a great importance. To investigate the landing impact characteristics to the landing mode, we construct a shoes-leg coupled model and carry out the numerical simulation by an explicit finite element method.
