  • A practical application of flight-axes/attitude control thrusters to the space launch vehicle and their design development localization are investigated and analyzed. Hydrazine thrusters are mostly used in a final stage of space launch vehicles on account of its higher specific impulse and reliability necessary for the precise attitude control attaining the orbit insertion with higher accuracy.

  • An effective control of the axial thrust of a turbopump is one of the critical issues for its operational stability. In order to assure the stability of a turbopump-type fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine, an axial thrust measurement system was developed and a series of axial thrust tests were performed in water environment. In the tests, the axial thrust of the fuel pump at the design flowrate satisfied the axial force condition of the bearing of the pump. Also, it was found that by using orifices with different geometries in the secondary flow passage the overall axial thrust of the pump could be controlled.

  • The third stage of the KSLV-II is equipped with the reaction control system that performs three axis-control during non-thrust coasting phase and performs a roll axis control during thrust phase. Toxic propellants such as hydrazine have been used for conventional rocket propulsions, however, recently, more studies have been conducted on the use of non-toxic eco-friendly propellants such as ADN and HAN. Especially, hydrogen peroxide has received a growing focus as an emerging propellant. It is considered an alternative of the toxic propellants because of economic advantage in producing the system, conducting operation test, and evaluation of the test result. In this paper, we describes the design, prototype, testing and evaluation of the test results with the 50 N-level hydrogen peroxide monopropellant thruster system which is currently under development.

  • In this study, triaxial velocity is analyzed for COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) configuration, which is generated when thrusters are used to dump wheel momentum. Since COMS is designed to periodically change the thruster set in order to uniformly decrease the performance of thrusters, triaxial velocity would be different during the change of thruster set. So, the triaxial velocity generated due to the change of thruster set is optimized.

  • An effective control of the axial thrust of a turbopump is one of the critical issues for obtaining its operational stability. Axial thrusts of the fuel pump for the 75-ton class rocket engine under development were measured with water as a test propellant at a room temperature. According to the test results, the axial thrust of the fuel pump seemed to satisfy the axial force condition of its bearing. Also, the thrust was increased as a whole when the flowrate of the pump was decreased. Furthermore it was found that the thrust and the leakage flowate were modified when the gaps between the floating ring seals and the impeller were changed.

  • The thrust axis alignment of the launch vehicle is very important because of the misalignment causes the unstable attitude control and results in mission failure. Generally, optical methods such as digital theodolite and laser tracker and mechanical method such as turn table method are used to align thrust axis to vehicle axis. This article deals with the simple method of thrust axis alignment of Kick Motor.

  • This paper deals with attitude control design for a thruster system which is mainly used as a control system of space vehicles. Attitude controllers are designed based on a simple blowing-down thruster system structure. In order to consider severe time-delay effects of the thruster system during controller design, the control design problem is defined based on the corresponding limit cycle analysis. Optimal roll controllers and optimal pitch/yaw controllers are resulted from co-evolutionary optimum design processes for each flight phase. The control performances are verified by computer simulations.

  • A high-speed centrifugal pump requires more attention to the control of its axial thrust due to the high discharge pressure than a conventional industrial pump. Vanes employed toward the rear cavity of the impeller can be an effective device to control the axial thrust of the pump. The vanes disturb circumferential flow of the cavity and it can modify the axial force acting on the impeller. In this paper, three types of vanes are installed in the high-speed centrifugal pump for liquid rocket engines and the thrust of the pump is measured with an additional thrust measurement unit. According to the results, shapes of cavity vanes have effects on the axial thrust of the pump. As the height of vanes increases, the outlet pressure of the rear floating ring seal decreases which results in a decrease of the thrust. On the other hand, head of the pump is almost same regardless of cavity vanes. Also, the pressure drop of the bypass pipeline increases when vanes are removed.

  • The thrust axis alignment of the launch vehicle is very important because the misalignment causes the unstable attitude control and results in mission failure. Generally, optical methods such as digital theodolite and laser tracker and mechanical method such as turn table method are used to align the thrust axis. This article deals with the simple method using inclinometer based on the gravitational direction. The inclinometer indicates zero degree when that is located on the perpendicular plate to gravitational direction. This method needs two inclinometer, such as standard and alignment ones and uses the angle difference as the reference data to adjust the TVC actuator offset.
