A high altitude long endurance aircraft which carries out missions of environmental research communication relay or ground surveillance, should have the capacity to cruise in the stratosphere at a relatively low speed for a long dwell time without the necessity of refueling. When one considers the propulsion system for such an aircraft, a reciprocating engine with a serial turbo-charger system to boost rarefied ambient air up to sea level condition, would represent an good, informed and practical choice regardless of the cruising altitude of the aircraft. In this paper, high altitude long endurance aircraft developed by overseas research groups and research trends, regarding multi-stage turbocharger systems, are introduced.

KARI has been conducting R&D for independent development of KSLV-II since 2010. Vehicle holding device is a device for vertically standing SLV on the launch pad of launch complex and fixing the lower part of vehicle in order to firmly fix vehicle so that SLV does not fall from an external load such as a wind load. When thrust generated after the 1st stage engine ignition of SLV must exceed the takeoff weight of vehicle, and holding device should be quickly released so that it does not interfere with takeoff of vehicle like other ground equipment at the beginning of the launch. Pyro-valve is one of the key components constituting VHD, and it should have high reliability and quick response characteristics with similar functional parts applied to launch vehicle separation device and satellite separation device. Through this paper, I intend to broaden the overall understanding of the development process of pyro-valve for VHD and KSLV-II.

This paper deals with the estimation method on the initial pole position of a z-axis permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) without magnetic pole sensors such as Hall sensors. The proposed method takes account of the gravitational force at z-axis and also the load conditions. The algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is to approximately estimate the initial q-axis by monitoring the movements due to the test current at predefined different test q-axes. The second step is to estimate the real q-axis as accurately as possible by using the outputs corresponding to torques due to the test current at three different test q-axes in order to avoid the effect of load mass variations. Experimental results on the z-axis PMLSM show good estimation characteristics of the proposed method irrespective of load mass conditions.

For a design of rocket engine nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be used as an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. 10 this study, a chemical equilibrium flow analysis code was developed for the design of hydrocarbon fueled rocket engines. 10 oder to understand the thermochemical characteristics occurring in a nozzle through the expansion process, such as recombination of chemical components and the accompanying energy recovery, chemical equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the KSR-III rocket engine nozzles together with frozen flow and non-equilibrium flow analyses. The performance evaluation based on the present KSR-III nozzle flow analyses has provided an understanding of the thermochemical process in the nozzle and additionally, it has confirmed that the newly designed nozzle shape modified to have a reduced exit area ratio is an adequate design for obtaining an increased ground thrust.

In this paper, the authors introduced a new approach to find the target orbits of each satellite in order to establish a temporary reconnaissance constellation mission to minimize the average revisit time (ART) while satisfying the constraint on fuel limit. Two distinct problems are dealt with: the first is to reconnoiter the local area with discriminating fuel constraint the second is to reconnoiter ground moving target with same fuel constraint. A preliminary effort in applying a genetic algorithm to those problems has also been demonstrated through simulation study. The results show that current ARTs of each mission are reduced by 41% and 42%, respectively, by relocating the orbit of each satellite. Naturally, the final result may depend on satellite orbits, sensor characteristics, allowable fuel cost, thruster capability, and maneuver strategies.
In autonomous interventions using an underwater vehicle with a manipulator, grasping based on target detection and recognition is one of the core technologies. To complete an autonomous grasping task, the vehicle body approaches the target closely and then holds it through operating the end-effector of the manipulator, while the vehicle maintains its position and attitude without unstable motion. For vehicle motion control, it is very important to identify the hydrodynamic parameters of the underwater vehicle, including the propulsion force. This study examined the propulsion characteristics of the autonomous intervention ROV developed by KRISO, because there is a difference between the real exerted force and the expected force. First, the mapping between the input signal and thrusting force for each underwater thruster was obtained through a water tank experiment. Next, the real propulsion forces and moments of the ROV exerted by thrusting forces were directly measured using an F/T (force/torque) sensor attached to the ROV. Finally, the differences between the measured and expected values were confirmed.

The requirements for the next-generation propulsion system and for a good propellant have been summarized. The characteristics and effectiveness of kerosene, hydrogen, and methane, which are the fuels that are mainly attracting attention in Korea and abroad, were compared with each other. As a result of the comparison, methane was evaluated to be more advantageous than other fuels in reliability, cost, reusability, maintenance, eco-friendliness, safety, lifespan, technical difficulties, engine cycle selection, application of common bulkhead, and non-disassembly/reassembly delivery. And in terms of performance, the specific impulse of methane is higher than that of kerosene, so the efficiency of the launch vehicle can be increased. Methane's properties incluidng eco-friendliness, low-temperature combustion, long life, and maintenability make it beneficial for reuse and for the development of multi-purpose engines.

In rotating detonation engine(RDE), only the detonation wave is moving around the outer wall of the combustor. Neither a mechanical part nor flow is rotating in RDE. Thus, the RDE cross section is not necessary to be circular, but arbitrary closed section is possible. A RDE of tri-arc cross section is designed and As an example of an arbitrary cross sectioned RDE, a RDE of tri-arc cross section is designed in this study, and operational and performance characteristics were examined experimentally. The rotation of the detonation wave is confirmed by dynamic pressure sensor and high-speed camera, while the characteristics of the detonation wave were investigated at the concave and convex surfaces. In the present study, the thrust level of 17.0 N to 96.0 N was obtained depending on the mass flow rate.

The flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) in this study utilizes the cambered wings made of quite flexible material. Similar to the flying creatures, the present cambered wing uses three different materials at its leading edge, vein, and membrane. And it is constrained in various conditions. Since passive rotation uses the flexible nature of the wing, it is important to select an appropriate material for a wing. A three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction solver is developed for a realistic modeling of the cambered wing. Then a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance in terms of the elastic modulus of leading edge and vein. Consequently, the elastic modulus plays a key role in enhancing the aerodynamic performance of FW-MAVs.
S-STEP is a small SAR satellite mission that monitors time-limited emergency targets and military anomalies in areas of interest, achieving the average revisit in less than 30 minutes by deploying a constellation of 32 satellites in low orbit at an altitude of 510 km. The mission operation mode of S-STEP is divided into normal mode, observation mode, communication mode, and orbit maintenance mode. Further,, the attitude control mode is subdivides into initial detumbling, sun pointing, target pointing, ground station pointing, and thrust direction maintenance. Based on the preliminary mission operational scenario and the satellite's characteristics, this study analyzed the attitude control performance during initial detumbling and observation modes. It verifies that each mode's attitude control accuracy requirements within the time allotted by the scenario of the S-STEP achieved.
