  • This paper introduces a thruster attitude control system for the KSR-III and addresses system configuration, design condition for several components and development systems. These systems were confirmed through environmental tests, compatibility tests with other sub-systems and are planned to launch by this year. After the launch test, it can be redesigned for optimal systems using post-analysis.

  • Reaction Control System of the third stage of the Korean Space Launch Vehicle II conducts roll control and 3 axis control throughout third stage engine start, satellite separation, and collision and contamination avoidance maneuver. Reaction control system consumes its propellant in each thruster operation. Hence, loading of proper amount of the propellant is important for mission success. It is needed to have a rough estimation method of propellant consumption during the flight. In this paper, we developed a energy equation using pressure and temperature data which are acquired in the on-board reaction control system. We constructed a test system which is similar with the on-board reaction control system to verify the energy equation. Test results using deionized water were compared with estimated propellant consumption. We also conducted an error analysis of the energy equation. We also presented the propellant consumption result of a system level operation test.

  • The third stage of the KSLV-II is equipped with the reaction control system that performs three axis-control during non-thrust coasting phase and performs a roll axis control during thrust phase. Toxic propellants such as hydrazine have been used for conventional rocket propulsions, however, recently, more studies have been conducted on the use of non-toxic eco-friendly propellants such as ADN and HAN. Especially, hydrogen peroxide has received a growing focus as an emerging propellant. It is considered an alternative of the toxic propellants because of economic advantage in producing the system, conducting operation test, and evaluation of the test result. In this paper, we describes the design, prototype, testing and evaluation of the test results with the 50 N-level hydrogen peroxide monopropellant thruster system which is currently under development.

  • This paper deals with attitude control design for a thruster system which is mainly used as a control system of space vehicles. Attitude controllers are designed based on a simple blowing-down thruster system structure. In order to consider severe time-delay effects of the thruster system during controller design, the control design problem is defined based on the corresponding limit cycle analysis. Optimal roll controllers and optimal pitch/yaw controllers are resulted from co-evolutionary optimum design processes for each flight phase. The control performances are verified by computer simulations.

  • KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I is designed as a launch vehicle to enter a 100 kg-class satellite to the LEO(Low-Earth Orbit). Attitude angles of the upper-stage, including roll, pitch and yaw are controlled by cold gas thruster system using nitrogen gas. To verify the flow rate of the gas charging system and to prepare a nitrogen gas charging scenario, the development of a gas charging simulator for RCS(Reaction Control System) is required. This paper describes the orifice design, development, and test of the gas charging simulator for RCS of KSLV-I.

  • This paper deals with attitude controller design and integrated performance tests on the nitrogen gas reaction control system of KSLV-I. Some major factors which are necessarily required in designing a stabilizing controller of reaction control system are investigated, and the corresponding equations are given. Experimental configurations and test conditions for system level integrated performance tests of the KSLV-I nitrogen gas reaction control system are summarized. It is shown that, based on the experimental data, operational performances of nitrogen gas reaction control system can be analyzed in terms of gas consumption, thrusting force, time delay, and specific impulse. It is also shown that a conformance of the controller to flight can be evaluated. Finally the onboard controller of KSLV-I reaction control system is shown to perform normally with enough stability margin via the first flight test result.

Attitude angles of the upper-stage, including roll, pitch and yaw are controlled by cold gas thruster system using nitrogen gas. The thruster for the KSLV-I is the main pneumatic valve in the RCS(Reaction Control System). In this paper, the design, function tests, and environment tests of the thruster for KSLV-I are described. The developed thrusters are experimentally evaluated and successfully passed the required qualification and acceptance tests.

  • This paper summarizes results of second stage attitude control of KSLV-I third flight test. The results show that three axes attitude control at coasting phases of KSLV-I was successfully accomplished by the reaction control system, and pitch and yaw attitude control at thrusting phase where second stage kick motor burns was also normally accomplished by using the thrust vector control system. It is verified that the second stage controller performed successfully for all flight phases regardless of some disturbances due to mass center offset, slag effects, and residual thrust of kick motor. These results may provide an important basis in enhancing domestic technology level of attitude control of launch vehicle.

  • A practical application of flight-axes/attitude control thrusters to the space launch vehicle and their design development localization are investigated and analyzed. Hydrazine thrusters are mostly used in a final stage of space launch vehicles on account of its higher specific impulse and reliability necessary for the precise attitude control attaining the orbit insertion with higher accuracy.

  • The novel limit cycle analysis of the attitude control system using jet thrusters was presented based on a phase plane method by paper. It was shown in the software simulation results that the analysed results of the limit cycle was more accurate than those of the Haloulakos' method. But it was not verified in the real system. The proposed method is verified in the reaction control system for KSLV-I via an real time hardware in the loop simulation. It can be shown in this test that analyzed result of the limit cycle is very accurate.
