  • Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

  • This paper proposes an optimal design method of linear viscous dampers for the seismic performance of two adjacent structures with different heights. Accordingly, connection method using diagonal bracing between two floors and connection method between two structures are considered, and the effectiveness of the latter method is confirmed through the comparison of the frequency response functions with respect to damping capacity. Moreover, optimal damping to minimize the response of the adjacent structures in the frequency domain is found. The sensitivity of natural frequency and modal damping according to the damper capacity at each floor is obtained for the optimally designed system. From the sensitivity analysis, the modal damping is evaluated to be very sensitive to the damper installed at higher floor. Therefore, sensitivity-based damping distribution method is proposed. Diagonal bracing connection method, uniform distribution method and sensitivity-based distribution method are compared to each other in terms of seismic performance. The comparative results demonstrate that the proposed method is an effective seismic design method for the adjacent structures.

  • Photographic lenses and an aspheric optical pickup-lens are designed by using damped least-squares(DLS) method. We start optimization with arbitrary initial damping factor. To improve the rate of convergence and the stability in optimization, we apply the special procedure that estimates numerical adequacy of derivative increments of variables to the DLS method. When the initial damping factor is almost equal to the median of series of eigenvalues, the convergence and the stability of the method significantly are improved. Optimized lenses have the performance of each target.

• Acoustic design parameters of a half-wave resonator are studied experimentally for acoustic stability in a model combustor. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of damping factor and sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. The diameter and the number of a half-wave resonator, its distribution are selected as design parameters for optimal tuning of the resonator. Acoustic damping capacity increases as the resonators with diameter increases. The optimum number of resonators or the optimum open-area ratio decreases as boundary absorption decreases.

  • Acoustic tuning frequency of quarter-wave resonators is investigated numerically to suppress combustion instability in a liquid rocket engine. A quarter-wave resonator is adopted, which was designed from the cold acoustic test for optimal damping condition. First, in a model combustion chamber scaled down from a full-scale chamber, reactive flow filed is analyzed numerically and acoustic-pressure responses are examined. Next, thermodynamic properties in the resonators are predicted. Based on the data, frequency tuning method is studied. The optimum tuning length of each resonator is proposed and thereby, sufficient damping is produced.

  • In this study, a seismic design methodology for friction dampers based on the story shear force distribution of an elastic building structure is proposed. First, using two normalization methods for the slip-load of a friction damper, numerical analyses of various single-degree-of-freedom systems are peformed. From those analyses, the effect of the slip-load and the brace stiffness was investigated and the optimal silliness ratio of the brace versus original structure was found. Second, from the numerical analysis for five multi-story building structures with different natural frequency and the number of story, reasonable decision method for the total number of installation floor, location of installation and distribution of the slip-loads are drawn. In addition, an empirical equation on the optimal number of installation floor is proposed. Finally, the superiority of the proposed method compared to the existing design method is verified from the numerical analysis using real earthquake data.

  • This paper presents an integrated optimal design technique of a hybrid structure-damper system for improving the seismic performance of the structure. The proposed technique corresponds to the optimal distribution of the stiffness and dampers. The multi-objective optimization technique is introduced to deal with the optimal design problem of the hybrid system, which is reformulated into the multi-objective optimization problem with a constraint of target reliability in an efficient manner. An illustrative example shows that the proposed technique can provide a set of Pareto optimal solutions embracing the solutions obtained by the conventional sequential design method and single-objective optimization method based on weighted summation scheme. Based on the stiffness and damping capacities, three representative designs are selected among the Pareto optimal solutions and their seismic performances are investigated through the parametric studies on the dynamic characteristics of the seismic events. The comparative results demonstrate that the proposed approach can be efficiently applied to the optimal design problem for improving the seismic performance of the structure.

  • The role of the injector as an acoustic resonator is studied for the high performance rocket engine adopting the gas-liquid scheme injector. Acoustic behavior in the combustor with single injector is investigated numerically adopting linear acoustic analysis for cold condition. Acoustic-damping effect of the injector is evaluated by damping factor as a function of the injector length. From the numerical results, it is found that the injector can play a significant role in acoustic damping and the optimum length of the injector corresponds to half of a full wavelength of the longitudinal mode with the acoustic frequency to be damped in the chamber. In baffled chamber, the optimum lengths of the injector are calculated as a function of baffle length for both cold and hot conditions.

  • Acoustic cavity as a stabilization device to control high-frequency combustion instabilities in liquid rocket engine is adopted and its damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. Geometric effects of acoustic cavity on damping characteristics are analyzed and compared quantitatively. Satisfactory agreements have been achieved with linear acoustic analysis and experimental approach. Results show that the acoustic cavity of the largest orifice area or the shortest orifice length was the most effective in acoustic damping of the harmful resonant frequency finally, it is proved that an optimal design process is indispensable for the effective control of combustion instabilities.
