  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of an alternative fuel resource by incinerating a mix of combustible MSW (municipal solid waste) and offals after separating recyclable material at the MRF (material recovery facilities) location. We analyzed the physical and chemical properties including the 3-contents, the calorific value, and chemical compositions of the separation rejects in MRF, and compared the results with combustible MSW. Moreover, we experimented the trend of combustible properties and the concentration change of air pollutants at mixed incineration in the MSW incinerator. According to the results of the experiment, the separation rejects showed higher heating value (5,865 kcal/kg), and lower moisture and ash content than combustible MSW. Since we have incinerated MSW in the MSW incinerator mixing the offals at 30% and 50% respectively, we know that the change of the concentration of dust, $SO_2$, $NO_2$, and CO did not appear significant, and not exceed the pollutants emission regulation. But, considering the enhancement of the HCl emission concentration (max. 33.7 ppm) at the co-incineration of the 50% offals, we believe that the proper mixing ratio of the separation rejects would become within 30%.

  • The fire resistance of particulate polypropylene composite systems were investigated by using various reinforced particles such as zeolite, talc, $CaCO_3$ particles. In this study, The effect of particle size on the thermal properties of composite and the effect of reinforced particles on the fire resistance were studied. The inorganic reinforced particles used in this study were recycled zeolite(average particle diameter=85.34 $mu extrm{m}$), $CaCO_3$ (33.93 $mu extrm{m}$), and talc (18.51 $mu extrm{m}$). The fire resistance of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring limited oxygen index (LOI, ASTM D2863) and cone calorimetry (ASTM E1354, ISO 5660). Thermal stability of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring TGA. The flame retardants (DBDPO) and reinforced particles reduce the maximum heat release rate (M-HRR) in the order of Talc > $CaCO_3$ > recycled Zeolite. Comparing the cone calorimetry experimental results of the particle reinforced polymer composite system exhibited twice higher efficiency than DBDPO in polypropylene systems, and the LOI also showed similar trends to the cone calorimetry experiments. The optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to investigate the composites ash layer and the core fracture surfaces in the burning process. The reinforcing inorganic particles seemed to accumulate at the surface of ash layer, and subsequently intercept the oxygen transport and heat transfer into the core area.

  • The effects of catalysts addition on the carbonization reaction of biomass have been studied in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The sample biomasses were Bamboo and Pine. The catalysts tested were K, Zn metal compounds. The carbonization reactions were tested in the nonisothermal condition from the room temperature to $850^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate $1{\sim}10^{\circ}C/min$ on the flowing of $N_2$ purge gases. Also, the effects of catalyst on the torrefaction were tested in the temperature condition of 220, 250, $280^{\circ}C$ at 30 min. Combustion characteristic for the torrefied catalyst biomass were studied in the nonisothermal conditions of $200{\sim}850^{\circ}C$. As the results, the initial decomposition temperatures of the volatile matters ($T_i$) and the temperature of maximum reaction rate ($T_{max}$) were decreased with increasing the catalyst amounts in the sample biomass. The char amounts remained after carbonization at $400^{\circ}C$ increased with the catalyst amounts. Therefore catalysts addition can be decreased the energy for carbonization process and improved the heating value of product char. The catalysts reduced the optimum torrefaction conditions from $250^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$. The torrefied catalyst biomass have lower activated energy from 46.5~58.7 kJ/mol to 25.1~27.0 kJ/mol in the nonisothermal combustion reaction.

  • In this study, we conducted a study on characteristics of exhaust gas emissions from boiler when water-bunker oil mixed by homogenizer was burned in boiler. The results showed that NOx concentration and CO concentration of the homogenized bunker oil was decreased by 19% and 54% compared to pure bunker oil pretreatment was not being performed. And, in the case of water-bunker A oil, the NOx concentration was decreased with increasing water mixing ratio in bunker A oil. In particular, the NOx concentration in exhaust gas of 20 %water-80 %bunker A oil decrease by 45 % compared with pure bunker-A. However, the CO concentration in exhaust gas of 20 %water-80 %bunker A oil shows irregular changes. This means that the mixing of water more than a certain amount can cause a decrease in combustion performance. From this result, it can be found that critical mixing ratio of water in bunker A oil for normal combustion is 15% in this study. Deposition amount of soot that is collected in the vicinity of the chimney was decreased with increasing water mixing ratio.

  • This study was conducted to analyze thermal effects for the structure of portable butane gas stoves in accordance with the introduction of safety standard to protect gas accidents that were caused by using oversized grills. The temperatures of oversized grill, cartridge and cover of cartridge coupling part were measured with stoves that heat sink was installed the inside of cover of cartridge coupling part and had different height of tripods. The trend of measured temperatures affected by thermal effects of grill and flame was analyzed. The condition of using portable butane gas stove safely is that the distance between grill and cover of cartridge coupling part should be about 28 mm and over. In contrast, when the distance between grill and cover of cartridge coupling part would be shorter, thermal effects of not only grill but also flame could affect the cartridge directly. In this case, the danger that could cause gas accident would be higher. When heat sink was installed the inside of cover of cartridge coupling part, it was effective on reducing of thermal effects. However, it still had the danger of explosive gas accident of cartridge due to overheating.

  • The effect of sub-grid turbulence and combustion models on the mean flame height in a heptane pool fire according to the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) version (5 and 6) based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was examined. The heat release rate for the fire simulation was provided through experiments performed under identical conditions and the predictive performance of the mean flame height according to FDS version was evaluated by a comparison with the existing correlation. As a result, the Smagorinsky and Deardorff turbulence models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively, had no significant effects on the mean flow field, flame shape and flame height. On the other hand, the difference in pool fire characteristics including the mean flame height was due mainly to the difference in the mixture fraction and Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) combustion models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively. Finally, compared to FDS 6, FDS 5 provided the predictive result of a significantly longer flame height and more consistent mean flame height than the existing correlation.

  • Recently, we have a lot interest in a sudden rise of oil prices and a change weather for the earth warmming, so, development of new alternative fuels need in order to spare fossil fuel and reduce exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may be used as fuel in diesel engine of compression ignition engine. In this paper, the combustion characteristics between neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were tested using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodiesel was produced from soybean oil at our laboratory. This analysis showed that cylinder pressures, the rate of pressure rises and the rate of heat releases were decreased as the blending ratios of biodiesel to diesel oil increased because of lower heating value of biodiesel in spite of increased oxygen content in biodiesel.

  • By extending one-dimensional ZND detonation structure analysis model, a simple model for two-dimensional oblique detonation wave structure analysis is presented by coupling Rankine-Hugoniot relation and chemical kinetics for oblique shock wave and oblique detonation wave. Base on this study, two-dimensional fluid dynamics analysis is carried out to investigate the detailed unsteady structure of oblique detonation waves involving triple point, transverse waves and cellular structures. CFD results provide a deeper insight into the detailed structure of oblique detonation waves, and the simple model could be used as a unified design tool for hypersonic propulsion systems employing oblique detonation wave as combustion mechanism.
