  • Low flow affects various fields such as river water supply management and planning, and irrigation water. A sufficient period of flow data is required to calculate the Flow Duration Curve. However, in order to calculate the Flow Duration Curve, it is essential to secure flow data for more than 30 years. However, in the case of rivers below the national river unit, there is no long-term flow data or there are observed data missing for a certain period in the middle, so there is a limit to calculating the Flow Duration Curve for each river. In the past, statistical-based methods such as Multiple Regression Analysis and ARIMA models were used to predict sulfur in the unmeasured watershed, but recently, the demand for machine learning and deep learning models is increasing. Therefore, in this study, we present the DNN technique, which is a machine learning technique that fits the latest paradigm. The DNN technique is a method that compensates for the shortcomings of the ANN technique, such as difficult to find optimal parameter values in the learning process and slow learning time. Therefore, in this study, the Flow Duration Curve applicable to the unmeasured watershed is calculated using the DNN model. First, the factors affecting the Flow Duration Curve were collected and statistically significant variables were selected through multicollinearity analysis between the factors, and input data were built into the machine learning model. The effectiveness of machine learning techniques was reviewed through statistical verification.

  • Vanillin is the primary flavor and fragrance compound of natural vanilla and is extensively used in the food, beverage, perfumery, pharmaceutical industries, and other applications. Vanillin can be produced by chemical synthesis, extraction from vanilla plants, microbial bioconversion of natural precursors to vanillin, and direct fermentation using glucose. Currently, most commercially available vanillin is produced by extraction from cured vanilla pods and by chemical synthesis using guaiacol and glyoxylic acid as starting raw materials. Due to environmental issues, health complaints, preference for natural sources, and the limited supply and soaring price of natural vanilla, biotechnology-based vanillin production is regarded as a promising alternative. As many microorganisms that are able to metabolize several natural precursors, including ferulic acid, eugenol, isoeugenol, and lignin, and accumulate vanillin, have been screened and evaluated, myriad strategies and efforts have been employed for the development of commercially viable production technology. This review outlines the recent advances in the biotechnological production of natural vanillin with the use of these natural precursors. Moreover, it highlights the recent engineering approaches for the production of natural vanillin from renewable carbon sources based on the de novo biosynthetic pathway of vanillin from glucose, together with appropriate solution strategies to overcome the challenges posed to increase production titers.

  • Free admission policies have been gradually extended for the public to use cultural facilities free of charge, which lowered the barriers to use those facilities and has a great effect on increasing visitor demands. However, the annual number of visitors which is open to the public isn't quite accurate and varies from institution to institution, which means just a head count. Especially people counter overestimates the number of visitors because it counts visitors in duplicate. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to prepare effective way of grasping the number of visitors using cultural infrastructure. First, comparable number of visitors should be measured by defining the notion of visitor clearly, which has been measured vaguely. Secondly, the problem of duplicate count, which is considered the most problematic, should be solved. Thirdly, the various analysis of visitor behavior should be conducted to provide a high-quality service. To work out the problems above, new measurement will be presented here. This study suggests a state-of-the-art wireless signal-based measurement that could eliminate the duplicate data by collecting MAC address -smart device's distinct signal value. And it also could analyze diverse visitor behaviors by understanding a flow of visitor traffic, duration of stay and revisitation. I would like to examine the possibility and effectiveness of this new measurement by testing it.

  • Ubiquitin signaling regulates virtually all aspects of eukaryotic biology and dynamic processes in which protein substrates are modified by ubiquitin. To regulate these processes, deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) cleave ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins from these substrates. DUBs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cancer, leading to the development of increasing numbers of small-molecule DUB inhibitors. On the other hand, recent studies have focused on the function of DUBs in metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver diseases. DUBs play a positive or negative role in the progression and development of metabolic diseases. Their involvement in cell pathology and regulation of major transcription factors in metabolic syndrome has been examined in vitro and in animal and human biopsies. UCH, USP7, and USP19 were linked to adipocyte differentiation, body weight gain, and insulin resistance in genetic or diet-induced obesity. CYLD, USP4, and USP18 were found to be closely associated with fatty liver diseases. In addition, these liver diseases were accompanied by body weight change in certain cases. Collectively, in this review, we discuss the current understanding of DUBs in metabolic diseases with a particular focus on obesity. We also provide basic knowledge and regulatory mechanisms of DUBs and suggest these enzymes as therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases.

  • Function of salivary gland and saliva composition can be an indicator of individual's health status. Recently, saliva has been thought to have a high potential for usage in the biomedical field to diagnose, evaluate, and prevent systemic health due to the technological advances in analyzing and detecting small elements such as immunological and metabolic products, viruses, microorganisms, hormones in saliva. As a diagnostic specimen, saliva has some useful advantages compared to serum. Because of simple non-invasive method, saliva sampling is quite comfort for the patient, and it doesn't require specialists to collect samples. The possibility of infection during the collection process is also low. For this reason, proteins, genetic materials, and various biomarkers in saliva are actively being utilized on studying stress, microbiomics, genetics, and epigenetics. For the research on collecting big data related to systemic health, the needs on biobank has been focused. Regeneration of salivary gland based on tissue engineering has been also on advancement. However, there are still many issues to be solved, such as the standardization of sample collection, storage, and usage. This review focuses on the recent trends in the field of saliva research and highlight the future perspectives in biomedical and other applications.

  • Ubiquitination is a post-translational modification that is involved in the quality control of proteins and responsible for modulating a variety of cellular physiological processes. Protein ubiquitination and deubiquitination are reversible processes that regulate the stability of target substrates. The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) helps regulate tumor-promoting processes, such as DNA repair, cell cycle, apoptosis, metastasis, and angiogenesis. The UPS comprises a combination of ubiquitin, ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2), and ubiquitin-ligase enzymes (E3), which complete the degradation of target proteins. Ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (UBE2s) play an inter-mediate role in the UPS process by moving activated ubiquitin to target proteins through E3 ligases. UBE2s consist of 40 members and are classified according to conserved catalytic ubiquitin-conjugating (UBC) domain-flanking extensions in humans. Since UBE2s have specificity to substrates like E3 ligase, the significance of UBE2 has been accentuated in tumorigenesis. The dysregulation of multiple E2 enzymes and their critical roles in modulating oncogenic signaling pathways have been reported in several types of cancer. The elevation of UBE2 expression is correlated with a worse prognosis in cancer patients. In this review, we summarize the basic functions and regulatory mechanisms of UBE2s and suggest the possibility of their use as therapeutic targets for cancer.
