  • A thermal vapor compressor in which the subsonic/supersonic flow appears simultaneously, has been accurately designed through the CFD analysis for the various shape parameters such as the primary nozzle shape, converging duct shape, mixing tube diameter, and so on. The performance of the developed thermal vapor compressor has been experimentally verified to be installed in a Multi Effect Desalination(MED) plant as an important element. In this paper, the effects of each parameter are discussed on the basis of CFD results and the experimental results for various boundary conditions(motive pressure, suction pressure, and discharge pressure) are presented in compared with CFD results. The two results show a good agreement with each other within 2 % accuracy with regard to the entrainment ratio.

  • A high motive pressure thermal vapor compressor(TVC) for a commercial multi-effect desalination(MED) plant is designed to have a high entraining performance and its robustness is also considered in the respect of operating stability at the abrupt change of the operating pressures like the motive and suction steam pressure which can be easily fluctuated by the external disturbance. The TVC having a good entraining performance of more than entrainment ratio 6.0 is designed through the iterative CFD analysis for the various primary nozzle diameter, mixing tube diameter and mixing tube length. And then for a couple of TVC having a similar entrainment ratio, the changes of the entrainment ratio are checked along the motive and suction pressure change. The system stability is diagnosed through the analyzing the changing pattern of the entrainment ratio.

  • In this study, the evaluation and the analysis of the correlation between rheological properties and pumpability of high performance concrete, C80A which was applied to the height of from 200 m to 350 m in a super tall building, was carried out by measuring pumping pressure and flow rate, testing concrete properties at before and after pumping. As the results, C80A had satisfactory properties of fresh and hardened concrete to the requirements even after pumping and the maximum pumping pressure showed increase of 10~15% at every 50m higher pumping and the average flow rate showed the above $25m^3$ per hour which means proper productivity. Additionally it was verified that pumping pressure and friction factor in pipeline are inversely proportional to slump flow and showed a tendency to increase according to the higher T-500 value.

  • In this paper, the performance analysis and the experiment of the brake system using the small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump were performed. Initially, the 3-D modeling of the brake load components was performed for the construction of the brake system. Subsequently, modeling using the commercial program AMESim was performed. A floating caliper model was used as a load for modeling the brake system. Through the AMESim simulation, load pressure, check valve displacement and flow rate under no load state were calculated, and performance analysis and changes in dynamic characteristics were confirmed by adding brake load. A jig for use in fixing the brake load during performance test was manufactured. The flow rate was assessed under no load condition and load pressure formation experiments were performed and compared with simulation results. Experimental results revealed the maximum load pressure as about 73bar at 130Hz and the maximum flow rate as about 203cc/min at 145Hz, which satisfied the requirement of small- and medium-sized UAV braking system. In addition, simulation results revealed that the load pressure and discharge flow rate were within 6% and 5%, respectively. Apparently, the modeling is expected to be effective for brake performance analysis.

  • A theoretical study on oxygen flow is fundamental to comprehend the practical production of an oxygen respirator and its stability. In this study, an orifice-type pressure-reducing component was designed for the newly developed oxygen respirator, using the commercial CFD tool, COMSOL Multiphysics, which increases its operational time compared to the existing component. The orifice was optimized by changing the length by 3, 6, and 9 mm within the entire computational domain of the oxygen respirator. Based on an oxygen flow rate of 0.028 kg/s, the oxygen respirator equipped with the newly developed orifice satisfied the flow rate within 33% for a respirator inlet pressure of 300 bar, and within 32.7% for 50, 75, and 100 bar. In terms of component manufacturing, the orifice length was selected as 3 mm, which removes additional changes to the existing component.

  • Recently, research on high-efficiency refrigeration cycles that apply an ejector to basic cycles has progressed actively. The role of the ejector and the performance of refrigeration cycles are subordinate to ejector locations. In this study, the performance of three refrigeration cycles with different ejector locations is compared and analyzed. The results showed an increased COP in all cycles due to the application of the ejector, with the highest increase of 44% compared to a basic refrigeration cycle. The ejector refrigeration cycle proposed in this study presents the highest COP, 3.47. Moreover, the decrease in condensation capacity in Bergander's cycle, Xing's cycle, and our proposed ejector refrigeration cycle went up to 21%. In refrigeration cycles applying the ejector, the pressure ratio of the ejector, the vapor fraction of discharge, and compression ratio are important factors for COP enhancement. For this reason, detailed and accurate control of these is significant.

  • A numerical study was conducted to determine the optimal design for a vehicle vacuum pump. The degree of vacuum was examined for different design factors such as the angle of vanes, number of vanes, angle and position of the pump inlet-outlet pipe, and angular rotational speed of vanes. The results show that there is a little difference in the degree of vacuum when the angle of vanes are changed, but an angular change in the outlet pipe reduces the pump loss. As the rotational speed is increased, the mass flow rate increases, but a high rotational speed does not result in the maximum degree of vacuum. In addition, when the number of vanes is increased, the scattering range of mass flow rate decreases and pressure drop is abated.

  • Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine is of great economic importance. A motor-driven cylinder lubricator for Sulzer RT-flex large two-stroke diesel engines developed by authors is in need of mounting a quill system to lubricate cylinder parts for smoother operation. In order to apply the common-rail lubricating system to the developed cylinder lubricator as the second research stage, the quill system with a progressively quantitative distributor is improved in the electronically controlled quill system with an accumulating distributor. In this study, the effects of lubricator motor speed, plunger stroke and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate, maximum discharge and delivery pressures are experimentally investigated by using the electronically controlled quill system with an accumulating distributor in the developed cylinder lubricator. It is found that the oil feed rate of the electronically controlled quill system with an accumulating distributor is larger than that of the quill system with a progressively quantitative distributor because of the increase of delivery speed and volume by changing the location of accumulator in the same experimental condition.

  • Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke marine diesel engine is of great economic importance. In Korea, authors first developed a motor-driven cylinder lubricator for a Wartsila Switzerland large two-stroke diesel engine. The characteristic of the developed product is that can control automatically the oil feed rate with a load fluctuation by the motor drive and the offset cam. For manufacturing the reliable and useful products, however, it is necessary to investigate further characteristics and to improve performances as a cylinder lubricator. In this study, the effects of pump motor speed, plunger stroke and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate, maximum discharge and delivery pressures are experimentally investigated by using the electronically controlled quill injection system and distributer in the developed cylinder lubricator. It is found that the oil feed rates of electronic control and mechanical type quills with the in-cylinder back pressure are differently characterized by the role of accumulator, the viscous resistance of contact area, etc. It can be also shown that the maximum discharge pressure of the electronic control quill is lower than the mechanical type one but the maximum discharge pressure difference of two types decreased as plunger stroke is small, and the maximum delivery pressures of two types increased as plunger stroke, motor speed and back pressure are elevated but the maximum delivery pressure of mechanical type is higher than the one of electronic control type.
