  • The characteristics of a helical turbine to be used for tidal stream energy conversion have been numerically studied with varying a few design parameters. The helical turbines were proposed aiming at mitgating the well known poor cut-in characteristics and the structural vibration caused by the fluctuating torque, and the basic concept is introducing some twisting angle of the vertical blade along the rotation axis of the turbine. Among many potential controling parameters, we focused, in this paper, on the twisting angle and the height to diameter ratio of the turbine, and, based on the numerical experiment, We tried to propose a configuration of such turbine for which better performance can be expected. The three-dimensional unsteady RANS equations were solved by using the commercial CFD software, FLUENT with k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model, and the grid was generated by GAMBIT. It is shown that there are a range of the twisting angle producing better efficiency with less vibration and the minimum height to diameter ratio above which the efficiency does not improve considerably.

  • The basilar membrane (BM), one of organs of cochlea, has the specific positions of the maximum amplitude at each of related frequencies. This phenomenon is due to the geometry of BM. In this study, as the part of the research for the development of fully implantable artificial cochlea which is based on polymer membrane, parametric studies are performed to suggest the desirable artificial basilar membrane model which can detect wider range of frequency separation. The vibro-acoustic characteristics of the artificial basilar membrane are predicted through finite element analysis using commercial software Abaqus. Simulation results are verified by comparing with experimental results. Various geometric shapes of the BM and residual stress effects on the BM are investigated through the parametric study to enable a wider detectable frequency separation range.

  • In this paper, a gas sensor using a modified $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler structure with conducting polymer which operates at 2.4 GHz is represented. Conducting polymers are used to the gas sensing material in proposed sensors. The conducting polymer varies its electrical property, such as work function and conductivity corresponding to the certain gas. To verify this variation of electrical property of conducting polymer at microwave frequencies, the conducting polymer is incorporated with the $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler structure, and this proposed sensor operates as reflection type variable attenuator and variable phase shifter. The conducting polymer is employed as impedence-variable transmission lines that cause a impedance mismatching between the general transmission line and conducting polymer. The experiment was conducted with 100 ppm ethanol gas at temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 85 %. As a result, the amplitude deviation of $S_{21}$ is 0.13 dB and the frequency satisfying ${\angle}S_{21}=360^{\circ}$ is shifted about 2.875 MHz.

  • The borehole radar reflection survey can image the underground structure with high resolution, however, we cannot get any information on the orientation of the reflectors with dipole antenna alone. The direction-finding antenna system is commonly used to give the solution to the problem. However, the interpretation of the data from direction- finding antenna may be time-consuming, and sometimes have ambiguities in the sense of precise determination of the azimuth. To solve the problem, we developed the automatic azimuth finding scheme of reflectors in borehole radar reflection data using direction-finding antenna. The algorithm is based on finding the azimuthal angle possibly showing the maximum reflection amplitude in the least-squared error sense. The developed algorithm was applied to the field data acquired in quarry mine. It was possible to locate nearly all of the reflectors in three dimensional fashion, which coincide with the known geological structures and man-made discontinuities.

  • In this study, a structure satisfying the fatigue constraint is designed by applying the topology optimization based on the phase field design method. In order to predict life based on the stress value, high cycle fatigue failure theory in which stress acts within the range of elastic limit is discussed and three fatigue theories of modified-Goodman, Smith-Watson-Topper and Gerber theory are applied. To calculate the global maximum stress, a modified P-norm stress correction method is used. As a result, it is possible to obtain topology optimization results that minimize the volume while satisfying the fatigue constraints. By applying the phase field design method, a simple shape with a minimized gray scale was obtained, and the maximum stress value acting on the optimization result became very close to the allowable stress value due to the modified P-norm stress method. While previous studies does not consider the stress correction factor, this study proposes the determination method regarding the stress correction factor considering loading effects related to axial stress components.

  • This paper presents a new implementation method of the pulsed NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance) apparatus, which contains a single coil in a magnet console, to detect a NMR signal. Applying an RF magnetic field of 5MHz to the magnet console which is designed to have Larmor frequency of 5MHz for hydrogen atom, the hydrogen NMR signal was obtained from the glycerin which was put in the magnet console as a sample. The DC magnetic field in the magnet console was implemented with a permanent magnet of 1168 gauss and the RF magnetic field was generated appling an RF signal with the frequency of 5MHz and the current magnitude of 8A to a coil of 5.73${\mu}$H. The magnitude of the NMR signal was maximum when the RF magnetic field was generated for 2.8 ${\mu}$sec, and the period of generating the RF magnetic field was designed to 100msec for detecting the NMR signal repeatedly. The NMR signal, radiated from the sample in the magnetic console, was appeared as an amplitude-modulated signal with a frequency equal to the Larmor frequency. The signal, induced in the coil, was amplified in the tx/rx separation circuit, preamplifier and intermediate amplifier by a factor of 20.7dB, 36dB and 40dB, respectively, and the signal was detected by a synchronous detection circuits, then the NMR signal was obtained.

  • A new weighing sensor for the automatic diameter control system of the crystal growth is developed in this study. This weighing sensor measures the frequency of the vibrating element which is lineally changing with respect to weight. The signal and the power of this system are transmitted without any physical contact, so that this sensor offers high accuracy and resolution. This system consists of a string, a sinusoidal wave generator, an automatic amplification adjusting circuit, signal transformers and a PCB. 4 kinds of programs are developed for checking DAC, weight calibration and controlling growth process. The measurements of the standard deviation and the resolution show $\pm0.10g$(measured at every second) and $5{\times}10^{-5}$, respectively, This weighing sensor is effective under high pres-sure of 200 atm, high temperature and vacuum condition. The weighing system can control the temperature in the accuracy of $\pm0.025^{\circ}C$ with the 'signal divider'. The optical quality single crystals of $(YGd)_3Sc_2Ga_3O_{12},\;Er-Y_3Sc_2Al_3O_{12},\;and\;Bi_{12}GeO_{20}$ have been grown by Czo-chralski method using this auto-diameter control system.

  • A 3.5 kHz or chirp sub-bottom profiling survey is widely used in the marine geological and engineering purpose exploration. However, swells in the sea degrade the quality of the survey data. The horizontal continuity of profiler data can be enhanced and the quality can be improved by correcting the influence of the swell. Accurate detection of sea bottom location is important in correcting the swell effect. In this study, we tried to pick sea bottom locations by finding the position of crossing a threshold of the maximum value for the raw data and transformed data of envelope or energy ratio. However, in case of the low-quality data where the sea bottom signals are not clear due to sea wave noise, automatic sea bottom detection at the individual traces was not successful. We corrected the mispicks for the low quality data and obtained satisfactory results by picking a sea bottom within a range considering the previous average of sea bottom, and excluding unreliable big-difference picks. In case of trace by trace picking, fewest mispicks were found when using energy ratio data. In case of picking considering the previous average, the correction result was relatively satisfactory when using raw data.

  • Electromyogram (EMC) signal generated by voluntary contraction of muscles is often used in a rehabilitation devices such as an upper limb prosthesis because of its distinct output characteristics compared to other bio-signals. This paper proposes an EMG-based human-computer interface (HCI) for the control of the above-elbow prosthesis or the wheelchair. To control such rehabilitation devices, user generates four commands by combining voluntary contraction of two different muscles such as levator scapulae muscles and flexor-extensor carpi ulnaris muscles. The muscle contraction is detected by comparing the mean absolute value of the EMG signal with a preset threshold value. However. since the time difference in muscle firing can occur when the patient tries simultaneous co-contraction of two muscles, it is difficult to determine whether the patient's intention is co-contraction. Hence, the use of the comparison method using a single threshold value is not feasible for recognizing such co-contraction motion. Here, we propose a novel method using double threshold values composed of a primary threshold and an auxiliary threshold. Using the double threshold method, the co-contraction state is easily detected, and diverse interface commands can be used for the EMG-based HCI. The experimental results with real-time EMG processing showed that the double threshold method is feasible for the EMG-based HCI to control the myoelectric prosthetic hand and the powered wheelchair.

  • An objection of this study is to develop a measuring circuit of a gauge using radioisotope for compaction control. The gauge developed in this study makes use of radioisotope with the activity exempted from domestic atomic law and consists of measuring circuits for gamma-rays and thermal neutrons, a high voltage supply unit, and a microprocessor. To obtain meaningful numbers of pulse counts, parallel five and two circuits are provided for gamma-rays and thermal neutrons, respectively. Being simple in electrical characteristics of G-M detector for gamma-rays, pulses are counted through only a shaping circuit. Very small pulses generated from He- 3 proportional detector for thermal neutrons are amplified to the maximum of 50 [dB] and a window comparator accepts only pulses with meaning. To minimize effects of natural environmental radiation and electrical noise, circuits are electrostatically shielded and pulses made by ripples are eliminated by taking frequency of high voltage supplied to the circuit and pulse height of ripples into consideration. One-chip microprocessor is applied to process various counts, results are stored and the gauage is made capable to communicate with PC. Enough and meaningful numbers of pulses are counted with the prototype gauage for compaction control.
