This study proposes seismic response analysis technique of a two-mass rack system which sustains heavy loads with frictional behavioral characteristics. In order to deal with the nonlinear frictional characteristics of the mass on the rack system, the equations of motion of the system has been derived and the appropriate numerical simulation technique has been developed. In order to examine the seismic performance of the proposed system, we consider two parameters that are expected to have great influence on the seismic performance of the system. One is the ratio of the two masses of the load and the rack structure, and the other is the friction coefficient between rack and loaded mass. A number of numerical simulations of the seismic response of structures with various natural frequencies for both parameters have been performed in order to investigate the seismic safety of the rack structures. From the simulated results. it is observed that the maximum displacement of the rack system tends to decrease drastically as the natural frequency of the structure increases regardless of the two parameters of mass ratio and friction coefficient. The proposed study provides important reference data to guarantee the seismic safety of the rack system by considering nonlinear frictional behavior of the loaded mass.

In this study, we examined the seismic isolation effects due to the difference between the center of mass of the building and the center of stiffness of isolation layer. Because the base isolation technique is a technique that is highly dependent on the performance of seismic isolation devices installed on the seismic isolation layer, we have to examine the horizontal stiffness of seismic isolation devices after making them. If difference between the design stiffness and the actual stiffness of the seismic isolation device occurred, a big problem may be generated in the upper members on the seismic isolation layer. The analytical results show that the more eccentricity increases, the more maximum response acceleration, story shear and the member forces of the upper part of the structure increases, and the damage is expected to be in excess. Therefore, it is recommended that if possible, isolation devices have to be designed to coincide the center of mass of the building with the center of stiffness of isolation layer. If not after making isolation devices, they need to be relocated to prevent the eccentricity.

Autonomous driving technologies have been gradually improved for road traffic owing to the development of artificial intelligence. Since the truck platooning is beneficial in terms of the associated transporting expenses, the Connected-Automated Vehicle technology is rapidly evolving. The structural performance is, however, rarely investigated to capture the effect of truck platooning on civil infrastructures. In this study, the dynamic behavior of bridges under truck platooning was investigated, and the amplification factor of responses was estimated considering several parameters associated with the driving conditions. Artificial intelligence techniques were used to estimate the maximum response of the mid span of a bridge as the platooning vehicles passing, and the importance of the parameters was evaluated. The most suitable algorithm was selected by evaluating the consistency of the estimated displacement.

In this study, fluctuating wind velocity for time history analysis is simulated by a single variate, single-dimensional random process using the KBC2022 spectrum about across-wind direction. This study analyzed and obtained the inelastic dynamic response for structures modeled as a single-degree-of-freedom system. It is assumed that the wind response is excellent in the primary mode, the change in vibration owing to plasticization is minor, along-wind vibration and across-wind vibration are independent, and the effect of torsional vibration is small. The numerical results, obtained by the Newmark-𝛽 method, shows the time-history responses and trends of maximum displacements. As a result of analyzing the inelastic dynamic response of the structure with the second stiffness ratio(𝛼) and yield displacement ratio (𝛽) as variables, it is identified that as the yield displacement ratio (𝛽) increases when the second stiffness ratio is constant, the maximum displacement ratio decreases, then reaches a minimum value, and then increases. When the stiffness ratio is greater than 0.5, there is a yield point ratio at which the maximum displacement ratio is less than 1, indicating that the maximum deformation is reduced compared to the elastically designed building even if the inelastic behavior is permitted in the inelastic wind design.

This study presents the nonlinear responses of a hinged-clamped beam under broadband random excitation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system or nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the joint moments of response coordinates. Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure schemes are used to close the infinite coupled moment equations. The closed equations are then solved for response statistics in terms of system and excitation parameters. The case of two mode interaction is considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. Monte Carlo simulation is used for numerical verification.

The capacity spectrum method (CSM) is a simple and graphical seismic analysis procedure. Originally, it has been developed for buildings, but now its applicability has been extended to bridge structures. It is based on the capacity curve estimated by pushover analysis and demand spectrum reduced from linear elastic design spectrum by using effective damping or strength reduction factor. In this paper, the inelastic demand spectrum as the reduced demand spectrum is calculated from the linear elastic design spectrum by using the several formulas for the strength reduction factor. The effects of the strength reduction factor for the capacity spectrum analysis are evaluated for 3 types of symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures. To investigate an accuracy of the CSM which several formulas for strength reduction factor were applied, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM are compared with the results obtained by nonlinear time history analysis for 8 artificially generated earthquakes. The maximum displacements estimated by the CSM using the SJ formula among the several strength reduction factors provide the most accurate agreement with those calculated by the inelastic time history analysis.

Under transverse earthquake shaking, arching action of bridge structures develops along the deck between the abutments thus providing the so-called deck resistance. The magnitude of the arching action for bridge structures is dependent on the number of spans, connection condition between deck and abutment or piers, and stiffness ratio between superstructure and substructure. In order to investigate the arching action effects for inelastic seismic responses of PSC Box bridges, seismic responses evaluated by pushover analysis, capacity spectrum analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis are compared for 18 example bridge structures with two types of span numbers (short bridge, SB and long bridge, LB), three types of pier height arrangement (regular, semi-regular and irregular) and three types of connection condition between superstructure and substructure (Type A, B, C). The arching action effects (reducing inelastic displacement and increasing resistance capacity) for short bridge (SB) is more significant than those for long bridge (LB). Semi-regular and irregular bridge structures have more significant arching action than regular bridges.

Two methods for the dynamic analysis of fixed offshore structures subjected to random waves are studied. They are the frequency domain method using the equivalent linearization of the nonlinear drag force, and the time domain method utilizing the Monte Carlo simulation technique for time series of random wave particle velocities and accelerations. Example analyses are carried out for two structures with different structural characteristics and for various wave conditions. A comparison has been made between the results obtained by two methods.

Probabilistic seismic risk analysis was performed. Exceeding probabilities of combined stress and maximum horizontal displacement of steel piled pier due to surface ground motion which was transferred from base rock motion was expressed as seismic fragility curves. Occurrence probability of peak ground motion was calculated by using the seismic hazard map on design code for harbor and fishery structures of Korea. Finally seismic risk of pier structure was found by combining the fragility and the hazard and those were presented through numerical analysis.

In this study, feature point detection and displacement measurement performance depending on feature extraction algorithms were compared and analyzed according to environmental changes and target types in the feature point-based displacement measurement algorithm. A three-story frame structure was designed for performance evaluation, and the displacement response of the structure was digitized into FHD (1920×1080) resolution. For performance analysis, the initial measurement distance was set to 10m, and increased up to 40m with an increment of 10m. During the experiments, illuminance was fixed to 450lux or 120lux. The artificial and natural targets mounted on the structure were set as regions of interest and used for feature point detection. Various feature detection algorithms were implemented for performance comparisons. As a result of the feature point detection performance analysis, the Shi-Tomasi corner and KAZE algorithm were found that they were robust to the target type, illuminance change, and increase in measurement distance. The displacement measurement accuracy using those two algorithms was also the highest. However, when using natural targets, the displacement measurement accuracy is lower than that of artificial targets. This indicated the limitation in extracting feature points as the resolution of the natural target decreased as the measurement distance increased.
