State and Prospects of Organic Waste Composting in Korea (유기성 폐기물의 자원화 가능성 및 퇴비 이용 전망 평가)

  • Generation and recycling potential of organic waste in Korea were estimated. Status of organic waste composting and compost utilization also were surveyed to promote the recycling of organic waste. From 1994 to 1997, generation of garbage decreased gradually while recycling rate increased due to positive governmental strategy. During the same period, livestock waste increased 11.2%. Municipal wastewater sludge was generated 3,500 ton/day which was 0.03% of wastewater treated in 1996. The energy Potential of industrial organic waste was estimated to 288 million TOE which was 1.75% of the nationwide first energy consumption in 1996. Recycling of industrial sludge was low to 31%, while recycling of animal waste, plant scraps, and wasted paper were relatively high over 50%. Industrial sludge should be recycled more as it was the most part of industrial organic waste. Conventional composting materials were mainly livestock waste, food processing waste, fishery waste, sawdust, and nightsoil. Garbage and sludge have been composted recently. 420,000 tons of compost in 1996 were produced by 288 makers, the most of which were utilized in agriculture. It was suggested that separated collection, compost standard, and quality management should be provided to promote the composting of organic waste.

Studies on Growth and Biomass Production of Deciduous Tree Seedlings under Different tight Environment (광환경 차이에 의한 활엽수종 유묘의 생장과 물질생산에 관한 연구)

  • The study was carried out to determine the growth and biomass production of deciduous trees including Betula pendula, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Cornus controversa subjected to artificial shade treatment of three levels in nursery field. The results were as follows; The height growth of seedlings was no difference subjected to artificial shade treatment. The root collar diameters of the relative growth rates of seedlings grown in full sun showed 29-32% as compared with those subjected to the shade treatment of 7-10% light intensities of full sun. Corrus controversa of the root collar diameters of the relative growth rates were better in the seedlings grown in 26-34% light intensities of full sun. Total dry mass including the dry mass of leaves, shoot and root were as a whole decreased with shade treatment. The ratio of the dry mass of leaves and stem increased the dry mass of root. T/R ratio of the seedlings increased by decreasing the relative light intensity. And the T/R ratio of 7-10% light intensities of full sun was ranged from 1.00~2.27 were greater in the full sun light was ranged from 0.51~l.13. Light intensity by artificial shade treatment decreased in deciduous trees when compared on the whole, it showed tendency that SLA increases, increased that seeing resemblant tendency in LAR and LWR and changed of light intensity is strong, it increased that showed difference as statistical.

  • Light Naphtha is distillated from crude oil unit and separated into the methane, ethylene and propylene by boiling point difference in sequence. This separation is conducted using a series of binary-like columns. This separation method is known that the energy consumed in the reboiler is used to separate the heaviest components and most of this energy is discarded as vapor condensation in the overhead cooler. In this study, the first two columns of the separation process are replaced with the Petlyuk column. A structural design was exercised by the stage computation with ideal tray efficiency in equilibrium condition. Compared with the performance of a conventional system of 3-column model, The design outcome shows that the procedure is simple and efficient because the composition of the liquid component in the column tray was designed to be similar to the equilibrium distillation curve. The performance of the new process indicates that an energy saving of 12.1% is obtained and the cost savings of 44 million won per day based on gross domestic product is reduced under same total number of trays and the initial investment cost is saved.

A Study on the Validity of Rural Type Low Carbon Green Village Through Case Analysis (사례분석을 통한 농촌형 저탄소 녹색마을 타당성 검토)

  • This study examined the overall feasibility of low carbon green village formed in rural area. The check method is analyzing its environmental and economic feasibility and energy self-reliance. The biomass of the villages was set as 28 ton/day of livestock feces and 2 ton/day of cut fruit tree branches which make up the total of 30 ton/day. The facility consisted of a bio gasfication facility using wet (livestock feces) biomass and combined heat power generator, composting facility and wood boiler using dry (cut fruit tree branches) biomass. When operating the system, 540,540 kWh/yr of electricity and 1,762 Gcal/yr of heat energy was produced. The region's electricity energy and heat energy self-reliance rate will be 100%. The economic feasibility was found as a loss of 140 million won where the facility installation cost is 5.04 billion won, operation cost is 485.09 million won and profit is 337.12 million won. There will be a loss of about 2.2 billion won in 15 years but in the environmental analysis, it was found that crude replacement effect is about 178 million won, greenhouse gas reduction effect is about 92 million won making up the total environmental benefit of 270 million won. This means, there will be a yearly profit of about 130 million won. In terms of its environmental and economic feasibility and energy self-reliance, this project seemed to be a feasible project in overall even if it manages to get help from the government or local government.

An Application of $^{13}C$ Tracer for the Determination of Size Fractionated Primary Productivity in Upper Stream of Lake Shihwa ($^{13}C$ 추적자를 사용한 시화호 상류역에서의 식물플랑크톤 크기에 따른 1차생산성 측정에 관한 연구)

  • Primary productivity was determined by using $^{13}C$ tracer according to different cell size of phytoplank-ton through in situ incubation experiments in upper stream of the Lake Shihwa. The average concentration of chlorophyll a was 14 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ demonstrating an eutrophic water. The ratio of POC/Chl-a was lower than 30, reflecting that the origin of organic matter might be mainly phytoplankton. The primary productivity was 93.9 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ at St. 1, which was about 40-fold lower than the average value of the lake (3,972 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) determined by Choi et al. (1997) before opening of gate but it was higher than the average primary productivity (3.98 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) reported by KOWACO in 1993 before constructing dam. The fractionated size (20 ${\sim}$ 53 ${\mu}m$) of phytoplankton community account for 51% of total primary productivity, indicating the highest assimilation rate. This study suggest that $^{13}C$ tracer methodology should be applied as a useful approach for the water ecological research in the future.

Seasonal Variation of Carbon Dioxide and Energy Fluxes During the Rice Cropping Season at Rice-barley Double Cropping Paddy Field of Gimje (김제 벼-보리 이모작 논에서 벼 재배기간동안의 CO2 및 에너지 플럭스의 계절적 변화)

  • Based on the results of continuous flux measurements at the Gimje paddy flux site in the southwestern coast of Korea, carbon dioxide and energy exchanges between customarily cultivated rice-barley double cropping paddy field and the atmosphere during the 2012 rice growing season (from $9^{th}$ Jun. 2012 through $20^{th}$ Oct. 2012) were analyzed. Carbon dioxide and energy (H, LE) fluxes were estimated by the eddy covariance method. Environmental parameters (net radiation, precipitation, etc.) and plant biomass (LAI, plant height, etc.) were measured along with fluxes. After the quality control and gap-filling, the observed fluxes were analyzed. The results have been showed that net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re) during the rice cropping period were -277.1, 710.3, and 433.2 g C $m^{-2}$, respectively.

Analysis of Gas Emissions and Power Generation for Co-firing Ratios of NG, NH3, and H2 Based on NGCC (NGCC 기반 천연가스, 암모니아, 수소 혼소 발전 비율에 따른 CO2와 NOx 배출량 및 전력 생산량 분석)

  • The reduction of CO2 emissions in the energy production sector, which accounts for 86.8% of total greenhouse gas emissions, is important to achieve carbon-neutrality. At present, 60% of total power generation in South Korea is coal and natural gas. Replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy such as wind and solar has disadvantages of unstable energy supply and high costs. Therefore, this study was conducted through the co-firing of natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen utilizing the natural gas combined cycle process. The results demonstrated reduction in CO2 emissions and 34%~238% of the power production compared to using only natural gas. Case studies on mass fractions of natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen indicated that power production and NOx emissions were inversely proportional to the ammonia ratio and directly proportional to the hydrogen ratio. This study provides guidelines for the use of various fuel mixtures and economic analysis in co-firing power generation.

Productive Structure and energy Storage of the Delta of Nak Dong River (낙동강 하류 삼각주지역 갈대초지의 생산구조와 에너지저장에 관한 연구)

  • In the grassland ecosystem dominated by Phragmites longivalvis in the delta of Nak Dong River, the production, decomposition, and accumulation of organic were estimated by the theoretical analysis. The amounts of organic carbon and organic matter of litter are $1020.43g/m^2\;and\;591.90g/m^2$, respectively. The amounts of organic matter and organic carbon on the grassland floor is $1154.96g/m^2\;and\;669.93g/m^2$, the ratio of annual litter production 'L' to the amount of accumulation on the top mineral soil (F, H and $A_2$ horizons) provided estimates of decay constant k. Constant k is 0.884 in the Phragmites longivalvis community. The vertical levels of organic matter and organic carbon is the highest in 120-140 cm of photosythetic system and in 0-20 cm of non-photosyntic system.

X-선에 의한 가공용 감자 내부 결함 특성 분석

  • 감자는 전세계 대부분의 국가에서 재배되고 있는 세계 4대 주곡 작물인 동시에 스낵류 시장에서도 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 우리나라의 감자 가공산업은 1990년대 초부터 활기를 띠기 시작여하 현재 2,000억불의 매출을 달성하고 있다. 이중 우리나라 농민이 직접 생산한 감자를 원료로 사용하는 천연칩 감자 가공산업은 매출액을 기준으로 144억 (1997년)에서 700억 (2001년)으로 과거 10년 동안 괄목할 만한 성장을 하였다. 우리나라의 연간 감자 칩 원료용 가공용 감자 소요량은 총 51,600톤 (2002 년)으로 그중 40,600톤은 국내생산량으로 충당하고 나머지는 냉동감자를 수입하여 처리하고 있다. 가공원료용 감자는 괴경의 크기나 모양과 같은 외부품질과 환원당이나 고형분 함량과 같은 내부품질이 좋아야 한다. 하지만 가공용 감자의 내·외부품질이 좋게 판정되어도 내부갈색반점이나 중심공동과 같은 괴경 생리장해가 발생하면 원료용 감자로서의 상품 가치가 상실된다. 국내 칩 가공원료용 감자는 봄재배에서는 약 5 ∼ 7 %, 여름재배에서는 10 ∼ 15 %의 괴경 생리장해가 발생되고 있다. 현재 위와 같은 생리장해는 가공공장에서 감자를 잘라서 골라내거나 감자 칩을 만든 후 제거하는 방법을 쓰고 있다. 이에 감자를 수확 후 감자칩으로 가공하기 전에 생리장해가 발생한 감자를 제거하여 생산 공정에서의 불필요한 가공을 줄일 수 있는 방법이 개발되어야 할 필요성이 증대되고 있다. 최근, 농산물의 비파괴적 품질 평가와 선별에 있어서 가장 실용적이고 성공적인 기술 중의 하나는 농산물의 광학적 성질을 이용한 전기-광학 기술이다. 그중 X-선과 같이 파장이 짧은 방사 에너지는 대부분의 농산물을 투과하여 내부의 질량 밀도의 변화와 상관관계를 갖는 품질 인자를 비파괴적으로 평가하는데 적합하나 아직 국내에선 X-선을 이용한 가공용 감자의 내부 결함특성에 대한 연구는 이뤄지지 않고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 가공용 감자의 내부결함 특성중 하나인 내부동공의 X-선에 의한 특성을 본 연구소에 있는 X-선 발생장비로 측정해 보고 비파괴적인 방법으로 실시간 가능성을 시험하였다. 감자는 수원 농산물 도매시장에서 2003년산 가공용 감자 (품종:선농)를 구매하여 사용하였다. 감자내 내부동공은 35 ∼ 40 kV와 5.25 mA값으로 발생된 X-선에 의해 잘 검출되는 것으로 나타나, 현장에서 충분히 활용가능 할 것으로 판단되었다. 금후, 실시간으로 내부동공을 검출할 수 있는 시스템을 개발할 계획이다.

A Study on the Application Effect of Central-Grid PV System at a Streetlamp using RETScreen - A Case Study of Gwangjin-gu - (RETScreen을 이용한 가로등의 계통연계형 태양광시스템 적용 효과 분석 - 서울시 광진구를 중심으로 -)

  • With continued economic growth, Korea has seen an increase in the nighttime activities of its citizens as hours of activity have extended into night. There is an increasing trend in energy consumption related to citizens' nighttime activities. In order to analyze ideas for an efficient replacement of the power consumption of streetlights and for profit generation by applying grid-type solar systems, this study used an RETScreen model. Through energy analysis and cost analysis, the application benefit and viability of grid-type solar street light systems were analyzed. With analysis result of a total weekly power generation of 114 kWh via a grid-connected solar streetlight system, it was shown that the net present value of a grid-connected solar street light system is 155,362 KRW, which would mean a payback period of about 5.2 years, and as such, it was shown that profit could be generated after about 6 years. In addition, if the grid-connected solar power generation system proposed by this study is to be applied, it was shown that 401,935 KRW in profit could be generated after the 20-year useful life set for the solar system. In addition, the sensitivity analysis was performed taking into account the price fluctuations of SMP, maintenance. As a result, a payback period has increased by 1~2 years, and there were no significant differences. Because the most important factor that affect the economic analysis is the cost of supply certification of renewable energy, a stable sales and acquisition of this certification are very important. the Seoul-type Feed in Tariff(FIT) connected to other institutions will enable steady sales by confirming to purchase the certification for 12 years. Therefore, if those issues mentioned above are properly reflected, Central-grid PV system project will be able to perform well in the face of unfavorable condition of solar PV installation.
