  • This study aims to analyze needs for living space of residents in a farming retirement community In this study a survey was performed about desire for living space and aesthetic aspects of housing environment. Results of the study are as follows; 1. Most residents desire permanently formed dwelling unit rather than assembled temporary structure so that they comfortable in noise-prevented space. 2 The retirement community residents do not desperately prefer individually separated room because open space provides better observsation function for emergencies. 3. They hope their dwelling units are grouped like regular neighborhood and the units have traditional designs such conventional kitchen and sink and wooden floor. Finally in this study it is proposed that Korean rural retirement community be established with maximum use conventional dwelling resources so that the residents benefit old fashioned living tradition even in the recently moved retirement society.

  • A cursory study of small mammals on and near five military compounds where Korean Hemorrhagic Fever patients had been reported indicated that Mus musculus was more closely associated with man than all other mammals ccmbined. Therefore, there is a greater probability that Mus musculus is associated with the disease than any other species. Rattus rattus was common in villages and farm houses but was not abundant on military compounds. The two shrews, Crocidura lasiura and C. suaνeolens were uncommon, but they were often found in close association with hemorrhagic fever patients. Other small mammals were rare or lived in such places as to come in contact with man rarely.

  • In East Asia, regional identity can be expected to obtain popular consent more successfully when it is firmly based on historical-geographical reality. This study is an attempt to apply a broadened concept of place to the identification of East Asia as a cultural region. Cultural mixture within places at various scales, rather than cultural integration across those places, would give greater coherence to East Asia as a cultural region. This cultural mixture varies from one place to another, depending on the relative position in power relations. It could appear in the form of either domination or resistance, and even entanglement. The concept of a "mountain as a contested place" is proposed as an experimental effort to search for the basis for cultural identity within East Asia. This concept of place should be extended to the individual studies of such spatial units as houses, gardens, villages and cities. These individual studies, if accumulated, would result in improved theories of East Asia as a region that has a distinct cultural identity in historical-geographical terms.

  • This paper attempts to analyze the changes of the contents in foreign area research carried out by Korean geographers, and discuss the task of the new regional geography in a global-local context. As compared with domestic area research, only a scant of foreign area research has been carried out. In the 1990's, the research interests are paid to how an open economy affects the regional economy, especialy the production technique, division of labor, industrial mix, market strategy, industrial location and organization, and so on. Unfortunately, however, the boundaries between economic geography and regional economy are gradully disappearing.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the geomorphic characteristics of two erosional basins with same geological conditions. The study areas, the Okcheon basin ($36^{\circ}\;14'{\sim}36^{\circ}\;20'\;N,\;127^{\circ}\;32'\;30"{\sim}127^{\circ}\;37'\;37"\;E$) and Jincheon basin($36^{\circ}\;48'{\sim}37^{\circ}\;03'\;N,\;127^{\circ}\;22'{\sim}127^{\circ}\;36'\;E$), are located on middle part of the Geum river. The geological maps, a summit level map, and a drainage network map are created and analyzed the geomorphic characteristics. The main results are as follows: 1) The Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin are typical erosional basin, in which basin floor are composed of granite. 2) The formation of Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin resulted from differencial erosion after upwarping. 3) Okcheon basin and Jincheon basin are available for specialized agriculture area and a site of new settlement with satisfactory to accessibility.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate land cover classification of PyeongTaeg area by Landsat Thematic Mapper Data June, 1997. This study was also to make more correct reference data using DGPS, aerophoto, and topographical chart etc.. The result of the area of paddy and upland were estimated 4,949 $\textrm{km}^2$ and 16,157 $\textrm{km}^2$, respectively. Correctness of estimation by using DGPS, aerophoto, topographical chart were shown over 90% correct in case of rice paddy field, water, and sea, while upland, vinyl house, forest, grassland, village were shown low correctness. Total average accuracy was shown to be 85.8%. Correctness of paddy field showed high value of 92%, showing that use of remote sensing data was proved to be effective methods to estimate spatial distribution and cultivation status of paddy field. Classification result of sea, water area, downtown had higher correctness, while upland, vinyl-house, grassland were proved to be relatively low correctness because of it's small area and mixed distribution.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the formation process and spatial structure of the mountainous village in the historic process as the case study on Yowon-village, Gyeongbuk province. The findings are summarized as the follows. The traditional location of the Yowon mountain village has been strongly influenced by local topology, drinking water, the form and time of the early setters. The spatial structure of the village was changed by the construction of road and accessibility to the road after the introduction of commercial agriculture. The form of the village consists of small scale of concentrated villages and dispersed. villages. Specifically, Yowon 1 ri has been restructured as a small scale of concentrated village and Yowon 2 ri as a dispersed one. The facilities both located in the center of the traditional village and related to communal life were moved outside while those for commercial agriculture were located in the center of the village. In sum, the village had been traditionally life-oriented and closed, but it was production-oriented and open particularly after the introduction of commercial agriculture.

  • In principal, the original form of Eupchi landscape in Naepo reflects a traditional idea regarding direction as a connection with one's fortune and naturalization strategy of power. In reality, the weight for the landscape inside the castle town was distinct by locality according to the conditions of natural geographies and main function of the castle town. In other words, the traditional Eupchi landscape was shaped under the fixed principles but it was simultaneously reflecting the local temporality and spatiality. As Chosun Dynasty went under the Japanese colonization, Eupchi in the traditional period started to evolve into a modem city. That is to say, the traditional Eupchi as a political place became to change into the center of capital accumulation, stronghold of economy and education, and center of town beyond the function as a place for government and administration. Therefore, the process of change from the landscape of Eupchi to a modem city was a kind of revolution in the form and function, and it was also a very rapid rearrangement of social space. The disparate element of landscape and double social space worked as a vital inertial element in the urban structure of Naepo area until the post independence and evolution of landscape.

  • Summarized results of this study that examined the characteristics of farm household in suburban areas classified by the fanning types are as follows. When it was looked into with the side of farm household and his family, the type of the farm household in suburban areas are related to the quality of fanning labor rather than the quantity of it. Regardless of the type of the farm household, it depends upon the family labor (usually men and wives). And the age of farm manager is an important part in the quality of fanning labor. The size of the farm household is related to the individual fanning labor. The size of self-sufficient crops(mainly rice) farm household will be small as the farmer gets to be old. But the size of commercial crops farm household has less tendency to change in terms with the age of farm manager. The fanning commercialism takes an important part in the maintenance and development of suburban agricultural areas. But, in fact, there is a shortage of farming labor. So the physical condition of farmland is the most important part in agricultural durability. After this study, we can conclude that we won't have enough chance to solve the problem of family member separation and shortage of fanning labor even though it is in the suburban area or in the profitable farm until we give them more enough chance to get a job(except fanning) and the better education infrastructure. To make matters worse, the aggravation of farm house-hold's economy due to unstable price of farming products' threatens the agricultural durability. Consequently, in order to get a development of agriculture and rural community, a qualitative change with improvement of agricultural conditions and of products distribution system is needed.

  • The purposes of this study were to reveal the backgrounds, process, and evaluation of the "Forest Survey Project(1910)" and to determine the influence of the "Comments on the Classification of Forest Land Ownership in Korea(1910)", which was based upon the results of the project, on forest policy in the early period of the General-Government of Korea. The forest survey project was conducted by two Japanese, Kiuchi and Saito, to understand the forest distribution in the Korean Peninsula by ownership and stand. However, the accuracy of the project was very low due to the lack of budget and time. Especially, village forests and special easement forests in the northern peninsula were classified into the Nation Forest without Administration caused by the informality and arbitrariness of the survey. Nevertheless, the General-Government of Korea used the results of the survey for establishing the forest policy on the classification of the forest land ownership in Korea at that time. The "Comments on the Classification of Forest Land Ownership in Korea(1910)" was based upon the results of the survey as mentioned above. The comments was realized as colonial forest policy through the Forest Ordinance in 1911 and a series of policies consolidating the modern forest ownership. To conclude, the "Forest Survey Project" was used to establish colonial forest policy in the early of the General-Government of Korea while its accuracy was truly low. Moreover, the "Comments on the Classification of Forest Land Ownership in Korea" had a great influence on the formulating the directions and details of colonial forest policy in Korea under the rule of Japanese Imperialism.
