  • This paper introduce a structure of haptic collaboration system over high resolution tiled-display, and proposes a object based efficient display method for high resolution display in integrated system. in addition, a modeling of visualization system is defined to evaluate performance of the proposed method. Both haptic system and tiled-display system have requirements of computational power. A haptic device is unstable if haptic rendering rate is less than 1kHz. A requirement of tiled-display systems is frame rate of display. It requires update of 30 frame fer sec. If we use these systems independently, we can satisfy each requirements. However, if we integrate two systems, performance of entire system significantly decreases because of lack of resources. In this paper, therefore, we propose a segmentation-based display method for ultra high resolution display in integrated system. The proposed method reduces redundancy of display data by reducing a display rate of static objects. Finally, a modeling of visualization system is defined to evaluate performance of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, a transparency analysis and network-adaptive transport scheme are proposed in order to improve transparency of EBA-based force-reflecting teleoperation. EBA guarantees stability of force-reflecting teleoperation over network delay and loss but has limitation that it cannot overcome transparency deterioration of haptic interactions. The proposed transparency analysis quantifies the force feedback distortion caused by network delay and loss. Based on the analysis, the proposed haptic data synchronization and transmission rate control schemes adapt synchronization delay and transmission rate to current network state for more transparent haptic interaction. Through Matlab/Simulink simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed analysis provides an acceptable quantification method about haptic interaction quality and that the proposed haptic data transport scheme effectively improves haptic interaction quality with respect to network delays and losses.

  • In this paper, we use VR technologies including touch processing technologies and haptic devices to offer touch of fish objects to users. The Omni, a kind of haptic device and made by Sensable Inc., is used to implement multi touch model in VR space. In addition, Matlab/Simulink and proSENSE Virtual Touch Toolbox of Handshake Inc., are used as programing tools. Functions needed to describe the movement of x, y, and z axis respectively are applied to delineate the natural movement of fish objects modeled with 3D. Such movements offer realistic physical interactions to two users controlling multi point respectively. In experiment, to perceive the appearance of 3D object by touch and to feel the respiration by touch are well conducted. We also verify that it is possible to develop games or contents through multi participation in VR Space by using multi point.

  • We propose a haptic rendering technology for touchable video. Our touchable video technique allows users for feeling the sense of touch while probing directly on 2D objects in video scenes or manipulating 3D objects brought out from video scenes using haptic devices. In our technique, a server sends video and haptic data as well as the information of 3D model objects. The clients receive video and haptic data from the server and render 3D models. A video scene is divided into small grids, and each cell has its tactile information which corresponds to a specific combination of four attributes: stiffness, damping, static friction, and dynamic friction. Users can feel the sense of touch when they touch directly cells of a scene using a haptic device. Users can also examine objects by touching or manipulating them after bringing out the corresponding 3D objects from the screen. Our touchable video technique proposed in this paper can lead us to feel maximum satisfaction the haptic-audio-vidual effects directly on the video scenes of movies or home-shopping video contents.

  • As virtual reality technology became popular, a high demand emerged for natural and efficient interaction with the virtual environment. Mid-air manipulation is one of the solutions to such needs, letting a user manipulate a virtual object in a 3D virtual space. In this paper, we focus on manipulating a remote virtual object while visually displaying the object and providing tactile information on the object's weight. We developed two types of wearable interfaces that can provide cutaneous or vibrotactile feedback on the virtual object weight to the user's fingertips. Human perception of the remote virtual object weight during manipulation was evaluated by conducting a psychophysics experiment. The results indicate a significant effect of haptic feedback on the perceived weight of the virtual object during manipulation.

  • This paper proposes a game controller that provides user motion input and tactile feedback display, in addition to the traditional button-type input. The device utilizes both an accelerometer and an infrared camera in order to estimate 3D position and to recognize user motion. The information from the accelerometer and the camera are integrated for better performance. Various tactile sensations are presented using a voice-coil type vibrator. We apply the proposed controller to a motion-based game and validate its usability.

  • This paper proposes a mobile navigation system which haptically presents the way to go to visually impaired persons. In order to convey the tactile information to the visually impaired persons, we develop a new tactile module with a solenoid, a permanent magnet and an elastic spring. Furthermore, we suggest 2D vibration flow which originates from one point and gradually propagates to other points on a surface of the haptic navigation system. The tactile module and the vibration flow method are incorporated into the proposed haptic navigation system and they stimulate the user's finger pad and palm, respectively. We conduct experiments to investigate that the proposed navigation system haptically provides the direction to the users. From the experimental results, we verify that the proposed system can generate enough tactile sensation to guide the direction to go in real-time.
