  • As a compressed water is rapidly expanded through a nozzle, two-phase flow of vapor and liquid is formed in the nozzle due to the flash evaporation. In the present study, critical flow of two-phase fluids is analysized using an Isentropic-Homogeneous-Equilibrium model and a Leung model. Calculation results show that the choke of the two-phase flow can be two different types of continuous and discontinuous chokings. For the stagnation pressure below 10 Mpa it is found that the continuous choking, which is similar to the choking phenomenon of single-phase gas flow, is possible only when the degree of subcooling is less than 10K.

  • A computational study is performed to better understand the choke phenomenon of unsteady gas flow through a critical nozzle. The axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method. In order to simulate the effects of back pressure fluctuations on the critical nozzle flow, a forced sinusoidal pressure wave is assumed downstream the exit of the critical nozzle. It's frequency is 20kHz and amplitude is varied below 15% of time-mean back pressure. The results obtained show that for low Reynolds numbers, the unsteady effects of the pressure fluctuations can propagate upstream of the throat of critical nozzle, and thereby giving rise to applicable fluctuations of mass flow through the critical nozzle. The effect of the amplitude of the excited pressure fluctuations on the choke phenomenon is discussed in details.

  • A laboratory experiment was made of critical transition flow modes in Czocllralski convection. Numerical computation was also made to delineate the dynamic transition. The period of temperature oscillation ($t_p$) and the interval of temperature oscillation ($\Delta\theta$) were scrutinized to capture the critical transition regime. The mixed convection parameter was varied in the range of $0.134\le Ra/PrRe^2 \le3.804$. The data from calculation were in good agreement with ones from experiment. The influence of the Prandtl number on the transition was examined for Pr = 910, 4445 and 8889. To understand the transition mechanism, the detailed temperature oscillation modes, the isolines of meridional temperature and the axial velocity profiles were investigated.

  • A laboratory experiment was made of a control of temperature oscillation in Czochralski convection. Numerical computation was also made to delineate the control of temperature oscillation. The suppression of temperature oscillation was achieved by varying the rotation rate of crystal rod ($\Omega=\Omega_0(1+A sin 2{\pi}ft/t_p)$), where A denotes the amplitude of rotation rate and f the frequency factor. Based on the inherent dimesionless time period of temperature oscillation ($t_p$), the suppression rate of temperature oscillation was characterized by the mixed convection parameter ($0.217{\leq}Ra/PrRe^2{\leq}1.658$). The optimal values of A and f were also scrutinized. To understand the suppression mechanism of temperature oscillation, the controls of isotherm($\theta$) and equi-vorticity($\omega$) were investigated.

  • A numerical analysis was performed on magnetic field effects of silicon melt motion in Czochralski crystal puller. The turbulent modeling was used to simulate the transport phenomena in 18' single crystal growing process. For small crucible angular velocity, the natural convection is dominant. As the crucible angular velocity is increased, the forced convection is increased and the distribution of temperature profiles is broadened. The cusp magnetic field reduces effectively the natural and forced convection near the crucible and the temperature profiles of the silicon fluids is similar in the case of conduction.

  • An experimental simulation on the flow in Czochralski melt using a cold model was carried out to obtain the velocities of fluid flow which affects the oxygen concentration of Czochralski crystal growing system. Low melting point Woods metal with similar Pr number to the silicon melt was adopted as a working fluid. Local flow velocities at numerous positions in the melt were simulataneously measured in three dimension using incorporated magnet probe. The measured velocity field showed a non-axisymmetric pattern dominated by natural convection. The analysis on the correlation between data set of temperatures simultaneously measured at two melt positions showed that the values of correlation coefficients were smaller than those of previous study on the small size of silicon melt and these phenomena are believed to occur because turbulent behavior becomes stronger in large size of the melt.

  • A passive control method of the interaction between a weak normal shock-wave and a turbulent boundary-layer was simulated using two-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations. The inflow Mach number just upstream of the normal shock wave was 1.33. A porous plate wall having a cavity underneath was used to control the shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction. The flows through the porous holes and inside the cavity were investigated to get a better understanding of the flow physics involved in this kind of passive control method. The present computations were validated by some recent wind tunnel tests. The results showed that downstream of the rear leg of the $\lambda$-shock wave the main stream inflows into the cavity, but upstream of the rear leg of the $\lambda$-shock wave the flow proceeds from the cavity toward to the main stream. The flow through the porous holes did not choke fur the present shock/boundary layer interaction.

  • The effect of the buyancy and thermocapillarity for differnent aspect ratio of flow field on melt motion and mass transfer has been numerically investigated in magnetic Czochralski crystal growth of silicon. During the process of crystal growth, the melt depth of crucible reduces so the aspect ratio of flow field also reduces. Therefore the shape of magnetic field of the flow field changes and the flow pattern also changes significantly. Together with the melt flow which forms the Marangoni convection (or thermocapillary flow) that comes from the inside the flow field, a flow circulation is observed near the corner close both to the crucible wall and the free surface. Due to this circulation, buoyancy effect has been turned out to be local rather than global. As the aspect ratio decreases, the radial component of the magnetic field prevails compared with the axial component in the flow field. Under the influence of this magnetic field, the melt flow and the temperature distribution in a meridional plane tend to depend on the radial position. As the aspect ratio decreases, the temperature gradient near the edge of the crystal decreases yielding smaller thermocapillarity, and the oxygen concentration near the crystal and the oxygen incorporation rate also decrease.

  • Recently sapphire crystals are used in LED applications. The Czochralski (CZ) growth process is one of the most important techniques for growing high quality sapphire single crystal. A successful growth of perfect single crystals requires the control of heat and mass transport phenomena in the CZ growth furnace. In this study, the growth processes of the sapphire crystal in an inductively heated CZ furnace have been analyzed numerically using finite element method. The results shown that the high temperature positions moved from the crucible surface to inside the melt and the crystal-melt interface changed to the flat shape when the rpm was increased. Also the crystal-melt interface shape has been influenced by the shoulder shape of the grown crystal during the initial stage.

  • In this paper, we proposed the broadband polarization diversity antenna operating in the PCS, WCDMA and WiBro band for mobile base station. We designed the antenna using the dipole antenna of the square loop type and microstrip feeding structure. Additionally, we used the choke box to remove the distortion of radiation patterns by the reflector structure when operating broadband. The simulation was performed using MWS in a commercial tool of CST company and the antenna was fabricated on a teflon substrate with 3.33 of the relative permittivity. The proposed antenna has the bandwidth of 640 MHz(from 1.75 to 2.39 GHz) when VSWR is below 1.5. At the operating bands, the interisolation between the cross-pair radiators is less than -25 dB and the maximum gains for PCS, WCDMA and WiBro band are 8.9, 8.2 and 8.6 dBi, respectively.
