  • In this study, the perceptions on SW education of K-12 students and teachers were surveyed and analyzed. At the primary school level, there was no significant difference in SW attitude based on school location. However, at the secondary level, students from metropolitan areas showed significantly higher SW attitude scores. In the case of gender, male students showed higher SW attitude scores both in primary and secondary schools. With regard to attitude differences based on prior experience of SW education, students with prior experience showed higher attitude scores in SW education in both primary and secondary schools. The awareness survey among teachers showed that both primary and secondary school teachers showed positive responses to SW education. For the successful induction of the SW education at K-12, four factors (participants, curriculum, teaching-learning method, and support from inside and outside of school) were highlighted.

  • This study examines whether there is discrepancy between elementary and middle school mathematics teachers' beliefs and practices in constructed-response assessment and how their beliefs and practices are interrelated. Analyzing the responses of 212 elementary teachers and 189 middle school mathematics teachers to the questionnaire, we found that there is lack of consistency among elementary and middle school teachers' beliefs, practices, and expected benefits regarding constructed-response assessment. In addition, there was a weak correlation between each group of teachers' beliefs and expected benefits about constructed-response assessment. The results from this study imply that such inconsistency in elementary and middle school teachers' beliefs and practices regarding assessments may determine the effects of constructed-response assessment.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify whether readability formulas based on linguistic factors are suitable for secondary and older primary age texts. A comparison among fomulas for primary age texts, some for both primary and secondary age, and some for secondary age revealed that exclusive ones for narrow age range were more effective. A model estimating readability scores from the average number of sentences in paragraphs or a model with two factors, the average number of sentences and paragraphs in texts was found to be good one for secondary age. While a model based on total number of unique syllables or a model from total number of unique syllables and new syllable occurrence ratio was good for primary age.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare by learner groups(K-12, geology-related majoring students, science teachers) how geologic fieldwork education cases in domestic and foreign papers for recent 20 years reflect the elements of inquiry in field geology. The total number of analyzed cases is 53(58 for double counting), and the analysis was conducted on the elements of inquiry in field geology and their sub-element. As a result, there was a clear difference between the cases of geologic fieldwork education for K-12 and college students majoring in geology-related disciplines, in the way of reflecting elements of inquiry in field geology. Because most of K-12 target fieldworks were designed based on the curriculum, it mainly included 2-3 elements of observations, representations, and/or abductive reasoning. On the other hand, because fieldworks for geology-related major students aim to train geologic experts, it diversely contained four or five of the elements of inquiry in field geology, including spatial thinking and diachronic thinking in a high proportion, and also frequently used activities that require specialized skills such as geological mapping. Fieldworks for science teachers were found to have mixed features of K-12 and geology-related major students. Considering the diversity of included inquiry elements, similarities with the activities performed by geologists, and the autonomy of learners, it was analyzed that geologic fieldwork for geology-related major students was more close to authentic geologic inquiry than fieldwork for others. Based on the results of this study, we suggested implications for improving geological fieldwork as authentic science inquiry.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the importance of systematic database education in elementary and secondary schools in Korea. The authors compared the curriculum for database education in elementary and secondary schools of Gyeongsangbuk-do province in Korea with that of Arcola schools in the state of Illinois, US. The database industries of both countries were also compared to suggest the significance of database education in Korea. We have shown that it is urgent to include database education in IT curriculum for elementary and secondary schools in Korea considering importance of database itself as well as the magnitude and growth rate of database industries in 21st century. Contrary to our research results, however, it is shown the IT curriculums of elementary and secondary schools in Korea is hardly adequate to provide systematic database education required in information society. Based on these results, we conclude that IT curriculums should be revised to accommodate systematic database education for elementary and secondary schools in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the utilization status of the Comprehensive Support System for Reading Education and other Online tools to draw implications for its improvement. The levels of utilization of the system before and after the COVID-19 were compared, in order to analyze the degree of support and the level of contribution of the system to school library education in the COVID-19 situation, where the online platform utilization has been maximized in elementary and secondary education. A questionnaire survey was conducted among teacher librarians to compare the perceptions of the overall online tools and the utilization of the system in the school library education before and after the COVID-19. Requirements for the better system primarily based on teacher librarians' opinions were analyzed. Based on these, it was possible to discover necessary implications for the improvement of the system in order for the system to function as an online platform for school libraries.

Recently, requirements for e-learning using internet in the educational aspect have a great influence on the changes of school educations. Cyber Home Learning System, in particular, has been implemented throughout the nation for the purpose of reducing private expenditure for education and promoting substantial improvements in quality of public education. However, there have been exposed many problems with respect to quality of operations and managements of the system comparing to its quantitative growth, and so, at this point in time, researcher conducted analysis of actuality of perceptions of both elementary and middle school teachers with a focus on the case of S System in K province. To test this, total 278 participants were sampled from the elementary schools (139 teachers) and the middle schools (139 teachers) located in K province and were asked to complete a survey and the results therefrom were analyzed accordingly. Results from the analyses revealed that elementary school teachers responded more positively than other respondents in the most areas, including supply of a variety of learning contents of S System, quality of contents, and providing for helps insomuch as to complement school works, etcetera. In addition, researcher has found out that, to make the system become all the more efficient, it shall be required to establish a strategy in order to induce students' interest in the system, as well as to construct infrastructure for facilitating the use of computer. And that there are also needs for continuous supports from both the school and the education authority concerned, and for method of flexible operation of curriculum.

  • This study aimed to examine character evaluation criteria and components for selecting creative convergent talents in college admissions. In this study, pre-college students' perceptions were surveyed on various issues related to character education and evaluation implemented in K-12 school system. It was found that the character education programs intended to enhance students' care for others, interpersonal skills, and honesty were most actively operated within the secondary educational systems. The results of the study also indicated that the programs for fostering interpersonal skills, care for others, and sincerity were perceived as the most effective programs. Based on the results of the study, we discussed ways to improve the quality of character education programs operated in school curriculum and to improve the credibility of character evaluation in the college admission process.
