This study was conducted to estimate genetic effects on economically important traits for genetic improvement in Hanwoo by using the real-time ultrasound measurements for longissimus dorsi muscle area (LMA), backfat thickness (BFT), and marbling score (Marb). The phenotypic data were obtained from 1,648 pedigreed cows, and general linear models were applied to test the effects of age, region, and body condition socre. The cows between 50 and 60 months of age had the greatest scores for LMA and BFT, and Marb (P<0.05). The cows in region C had the greatest scores for body condition socre, LMA and BFT, while in region J Marb was the lowest (P<0.05). There was positive relation with LMA, BFT, and Marb according to increase body condition socre. Heritabilities for LMA, BFT, and Marb were estimated as 0.136, 0.351, and 0.236, respectively. These results would provide primary information for the efficient implementation of genetic improvement schemes in Hanwoo.

Purpose: A recently introduced phacoemulsification system, the WhiteStar $Signature^{(R)}$ PRO, has demonstrated improved nucleus followability and cutting efficiency via an improved pump regulator with a higher reaction response and an automatic occlusion sensing system. In this study, we compared various phacoemulsification parameters between the new system and an older version of the device. Methods: A total of 80 eyes of 68 patients with cataracts who had undergone phacoemulsification by a single surgeon were included in this study. Forty eyes of patients underwent phacoemulsification using the older $Signature^{(R)}$ system (WhiteStar); these patients were classified as the control group. Another 40 eyes of patients underwent phacoemulsification with the newer enhanced system, the WhiteStar $Signature^{(R)}$ PRO; these patients were assigned to the experimental group. During the operation, operative parameters, including the effective phaco time (parameter of effective phaco time with a specific coefficient for the transversal movement expressed in seconds, EFX), ultrasound time (seconds [s]), effective phacoemulsification time (EPT, s), average phacoemulsification power (AVG, %), and balanced salt solution usage, were measured to determine the performance enhancement offered by the updated system. Central corneal thickness was measured before and after surgery to compare corneal edema. The relationships between the two groups were analyzed using an independent t-test. Results: The Signature $PRO^{(R)}$ system showed a lower EFX (p < 0.001), a shorter EPT (p < 0.001), and a smaller AVG (p < 0.001). Postoperative corneal thickness did not differ significantly between the two groups. Conclusions: Comparing the efficacy of the improved reaction speed of the device and automatic occlusion sensing system in performing phacoemulsification, the updated Signature $PRO^{(R)}$ system demonstrated superior followability and cutting efficiency regardless of nuclear cataract hardness.

This paper is studied on the influence of machining conditions on weldability obtained by ultrasonic machining. The weldability estimation of dissimilar Ni-Cu sheets with the optimization of one-wavelength horn is confirmed by the use of ultrasonic machining. The optimal welding condition with tensile test by setting the ultrasonic machining parameters is suggested and the weldability is estimated by SEM observation and EDX-ray analysis. Experimental studies are worked with the measure of tensile strength and the analysis of SEM photograph after the ultrasonic machining of workpiece. Machining parameters of machining time, pressure, and amplitude are also applied to this paper.

The design formular of optical focusing systems cannot be applied to ultrasonic B scanners, which use broadband pulses instead of continuous wave. In this paper, a calculation method is studied for analyzing the propagation of ultrasonic broadband pulse excited by ultrasonic array transducers. Using the results, seveial design parameters such as the number of transducer elements, delay time, and the focal point are determined to obtain high resolution in the ultrasonic dynamic focusing system. A dynamic focusing system with low-noise switching characteristics; which attains lateral resolution of 2-3mm all along the axial direction up to 18 cm with a 3.5 MHz linear array transducer, was implemented.

Breast and prostate tumors or cancers tend to be stiffer than the surrounding normal tissue. However, the difference in echogenicity between cancerous and normal tissues is not clearly distinguishable in ultrasound B-mode imaging. Thus, imaging the stiffness contrast between the two different tissue types helps to diagnose lesions quantitatively, and such a method of imaging the elasticity of human tissue is termed ultrasound elasticity imaging. Recently, elasticity imaging has become an effective complementary diagnostic modality along with ultrasound B-mode imaging. This paper presents various elasticity imaging methods that have been reported up to now and describes their characteristics and principles of operation.

This research was conducted to evaluate the changes in allergenicity of shrimp by physical treatments using competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Ci-ELISA). Shrimp was subjected to physical treatments such as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), sonication, autoclave and microwave. Heat-stable protein (HSP) purified from raw shrimp was used as a major allergen. The binding ability of monoclonal IgG and shrimp-allergic patients' IgE to HSP treated with HHP decreased, increasing the pressure up to 400 MPa. Especially, it became less than 50% at 400 MPa. The binding ability of mAb to HSP treated with sonication (10, 20, 30 and 60 min) decreased with the treated time. Especially, it became less than 60% with the treatment for 60 min. The allergenicity change of HSP treated with autoclave and microwave little decreased. The binding ability of mAb to HSP during the treatment for 20 min became more than 70%. The results suggest that allergenicity of HSP in raw shrimp be more easily lost by HHP or sonication treatment than by autoclave or microwave treatment.
Coronal discoloration is a common sequela to traumatic injuries. In subluxation cases, although the injury is not strong enough to rupture the apical vessels, discoloration may appear by tearing thin walls or occluding small capillaries. In absence of infection pulpal regeneration can occur, and as a result discoloration may completely or partially subside. But judging pulpal status by coronal discoloration can be dangerous and it may lead to unnecessary treatment. This case presents coronal discoloration and recovery following traumatic injury of maxillary anterior teeth. In diagnosing traumatized teeth routine cold tests or electric pulp tests are known to be unreliable, but with the aid of ultrasound doppler imaging, assessing pulp vitality of traumatized teeth can be more accurate.

Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial application with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristics of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents a new attempt to detect the bond strength of friction welds by ultrasonic. Instead of looking for a flaw or cracks at the interface, the new approach evaluates the coefficient by reflection which provides a single quantitative indicator involving the acoustic energy reflected at the interface. The objective of this study is to find the relationship between the reflection coefficients and the weld strength. Results of the bar-to-bar friction welding of aluminum to copper and stainless steel and such relationship investigation are presented and interpreted.

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the disinfection of clinical ultrasound probes using the vapor fumigation method, which can quickly achieve high-level disinfection. Upon the inspection of the microbial contamination level of clinically used ultrasound probes, nine different types of bacteria were detected. The disinfection efficacy of 7.5% and 35% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was comparatively tested for the detected microbes. The 35% H2O2 demonstrated superior efficacy per disinfection duration. No significant change was observed in the rubber component of the ultrasound probes as a result of the 35% H2O2 disinfection treatment. The probes were contaminated with the microbes detected in the microbial contamination level inspection and subsequently disinfected using the novel medical disinfector that utilizes the vapor fumigation method. As a result, the disinfection using the novel device achieved 100% eradication of the microbes from the probes. This study demonstrates that the novel vapor fumigation method-based disinfector provides a faster and more powerful means of disinfection than the conventional disinfection methods. Therefore, the novel disinfector has the potential to be used as a convenient ultrasound probe disinfector in clinical settings.
