  • The purpose of this research is to investigate how an elementary English class is presented in terms of communicative properties using COLT and TALOS because previous studies mainly used COLT. A lack of TALOS has shown on the previous studies. Also, this study takes a close look into whether the English class is communicative or not communicative since previous studies criticized in that elementary English classes are not communicative. For the purposes of this research, COLT part B and TALOS low-inference were used to analyze one elementary English class which had won the grand prize at English class contest. The result of this study revealed that the class is communicative in terms of high quantity and quality of students utterances, high ratio of students' discourse initiation, students' unpredictable information giving utterances and extension of utterances. Findings from this study revealed the good elementary English class characteristics of this class: students' participation, focus on affective atmosphere, students-directed activities, and unconscious internalization of target expressions through repetition.

Twenty-seven students took English integrated instruction before their regular class for 10 minutes while the other students took review activity instead of it. At first, the students were asked to take the sixth grade diagnostic evaluation sponsored by C office of education in 2018 as the pre-test and ten months later, they were asked to take the first grade diagnostic evaluation of middle school sponsored by C office of education in 2017 as the post-test. Results of the study showed that the English ability and the affective attitude of the students taking English integrated instruction were improved. These results suggest that English integrated instruction can contribute to the improvement of Korean elementary students' English ability.

  • This study suggests the effectiveness of G-learning English afterschool classes implemented to elementary school students at low achievement level in English. These days, the use of games in teaching and learning, known as G-learning, has gradually expanded, so it is necessary to consider how to adapt G-learning generally in English education. A G-learning afterschool English class was implemented to 23 low-level 5th grade students in an elementary school located in Daejon for 12 weeks. This study set two hypotheses aiming to determine the effectiveness in achievement and affectiveness of the participants. Pre and post achievement tests were conducted. Also, survey and FGI (focused group interview) were carried out twice with the participants. The study found that students' spelling awareness, vocabulary recognition and dialogue comprehension ability (hypothesis 1) were all improved with statistical significance. Moreover, after the class, participants' confidence and interest toward English study showed meaningful increases.

  • Pre-service teachers have established and developed their own teaching strategies and professional language teaching skills based on their pedagogical and learning experiences. In this regard, it is conceivable that pre-service teachers' feedback may have distinct viewpoints and focuses. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze pre-service teachers' feedback to microteaching demonstrations. Participants in the study were 40 prospective elementary school teachers. They were invited to offer feedback on microteachings video-recorded by their peers. According to the findings, we identified a total of 708 comments. The majority of feedback was categorized as teacher talk(40.1%) , followed by teaching and learning activity (20.9%), interaction (12.6%), teaching materials (11.4%), classroom atmosphere and learning environment (8.9%), lesson flow (3.7%), review and evaluation (1.3%), and introduction and objectives (1.1%). The most frequent types of feedback were the teacher's use of appropriate speaking rate, tone, and intonation. This finding reflects the fact that English teachers realize the importance of the teacher's English proficiency, therefore we suggest that teacher education institutions need raise awareness not just of teachers' English skills but also of their diverse perspectives.

  • This study aims to investigate how learning materials are used in an outstanding English class and to analyze learning materials and their use in primary English classroom activities. To this end, An Analytic Scheme of Learning Materials Use (ASLMU) is used to quantify utilization patterns of learning materials. The findings are: Learning materials are most actively used in the development period, followed by introduction and consolidation. The teacher's rate of using learning materials is much higher than student's, and the rate of using materials for whole students is higher than the rate of using materials for an individual or groups. It requires developing learning materials toward more a student-centered class because the teacher's occupancy of the learning materials is fourfold compared to the student's occupancy. Also, non-language materials are used more than language materials, and English materials are used more than Korean materials. Most of the materials are used to present a question and explain. The findings of the study are expected to suggest features of learning materials in an outstanding English class and application method of learning materials to primary English teachers.
