  • In order to investigate the shear characteristics of earth structure after construction. Four sample soils with different gradation were selected and compacted under the optimum moisture content and the maximum dry density. And the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test were performed with those sample soils under various pre-compression loads. The results were summarized as follows; 1. With the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, the cohesion of soil increased regularly and the internal friction angle of soil decreased with slow ratio. 2. The pre-compression increased the shear strength of compacted cohesive soil. The increase of cohesion was very apparent but the internal friction angle didn't show such regular tendency. 3. With the increase of pre-compression load, the slope of stress-strain curve showed steep at the early stage of horizontal strain. The vertical strain was small at the compression stage and big at the expansion stage. 4. When the vertical stress of shear test with increase in the horizontal strain was small, stress ratio(shear stress vs. vertical stress) of sample showed the largest value and the slope of stress ratio curve showed also steep. 5. When the sample was had the same condition, the cohesion of soil showed bigger value in the triaxial compression test and the internal friction angle of soil showed bigger value in the direct shear test.

  • Many study have been performed to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings that generally concentrated on the monotonic loading condition and concentric web opening. The findings of the studies led Darwin to propose formulas for the design of beams with web openings considering local buckling. While the formulas are simple and useful in real situation, more studies arc needed on their cyclic loading condition. In this experimental study, 12 H-shaped beams with web openings under cyclic loading condition were investigated. The dimension criteria based on the formulas proposed by Darwin were examined. The suitability of existing design formulas and the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings and of local buckling around web openings on the beam strength under cyclic loading were also studied. This was done by observing their behavior with various dimensional openings, eccentric per cent, and stiffeners.

  • Statement of problem: There is a reduction of dentin bonding strength when the bonding procedure is carried out immediately after bleaching with peroxides. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate a proper time interval for in-office bleaching technique using 35% hydrogen peroxide. Material and methods: Fifty extracted non-caries human third molars were used in this study. Buccal enamel of each tooth was removed and polished by 600 grits silicone carbide paper. They were randomly divided into five groups and bleached 35% hydrogen peroxide except control group. All groups were bonded with Single Bond/Z 350 after each time intervals ; Group-A: control, no bleaching treatment. Group-B: resin bonding immediately after bleaching. Group-C: resin bonding 1day after bleaching. Group-D: resin bonding 2 days after bleaching. Group-E: resin bonding 7days after bleaching. Shear bond strengths were measured with a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min using an Instron machine. The data of results were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test.(P=.05) Results: There were significant decreases in mean shear strength in immediately bonding group after bleaching. The reduction of bond strengths was 78% compared with the group of no bleaching treatment. Group C showed the recovery of 51%, and Group D showed recovery of 63%. Both of them have no statistical difference with non-bleaching group. Group E showed no statistical difference with no bleaching treatment group. Conclusion: Dentin bonding strength is significantly reduced when bonding is performed immediately after bleaching for in-office bleaching regimens using 35% hydrogen peroxide, and increases as time goes by. One week of elapsed time between bleaching and resin bonding significantly increases bonding strengths for the in-office bleaching technique.

  • Recently, numerous studies were dedicated on the HVFA concrete using high volume CCPs. In initial studies, main topics are dependent on material properties of HVFA concrete, but several studies were dedicated on the structural behavior of HVFA concrete such as elasticity modulus, stress-strain relationship and structural behavior nowadays. Therefore, in this paper, on the basis of recent studies on the structural behavior, 2 large-scale test members were manufactured with 7.5m span length and fly ash replacement ratio 50%, concrete compressive strength 50MPa in order to apply to the practical structure and evaluate possibility of application. From the test results, although there were small differences between test results and existing research results on the stress-strain relationship, the application to practical structure is not hard. In flexural test, as the produced pattern of displacement and strain were similar to those of general concrete without fly ash, the difference between 50% fly ash concrete and general concrete is very small. And the concrete shear strength obtained by test was similar to that of design code, so existing design code will be also able to apply.

  • Derivation procedures of exact dynamic element stiffness matrix of shear deformable nonsymmetric thin-walled straight beams are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of dispalcement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions or results of the analysis using ABAQUS' shell elements for the thin-walled straight beam structure in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

  • Recently, an interest on joint behavior between adjacent concrete slab tracks has increasing due to large application of such track system. Dowel bars are widely used to improve load transfer capacity across the joints. Dowel bars reduce the deflections and stresses by transferring the load between the slabs. This study proposes the lumped shear spring model to efficiently model dowel joints of adjacent slabs. This model includes bearing stiffness between dowel bar and concrete as well as dowel gap. Strength of the proposed spring model is evaluated based on Concrete Capacity Design method under the assumption of shear failure mode in the joints. Experiments are also performed up to failure to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. It has been observed that the proposed model is able to predict initial nonlinearity due to dowel gap, and capture material nonlinearity of the test slabs. Thus, it is recommended that the proposed model can be effectively applied to the dowel joints of concrete slab track.

  • The failure of composite sandwich joints was experimentally investigated. A total of 30 joint specimens of 5 different types were tested with various fastening methods and core materials. In the NomexTM core sandwich joints, the core shear buckling was commonly observed in all the specimens which was followed by the slope change of the load-displacement curve. After the shear buckling, however, the joints carried additional loads of 50~200% over the buckling loads and then finally failed in the upper face breakage. The joints of PMI foam core showed the shear failure of the core instead of shear buckling and experienced the sharp drop of the carried load. Considering the failure modes, while both the core and face properties are important in the $Nomex^{TM}$ core joints, core shear strength seems to be the critical factor for the foam core joints.

  • This paper is a preliminary study to apply the lightweight concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bars to the bridge deck slabs or some other concrete structures. So, some different behaviors between the conventional steel reinforced concrete slab and the lightweight concrete slab reinforced with GFRP bars were investigated. For this purpose, a number of slabs were constructed and then the three point bending test and numerical analysis for these slabs were performed. The flexural test results showed that the lightweight concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP bars were failed by the shear failure due to the over-reinforced design. The weight and failure load of the GFRP bar reinforced lightweight concrete slabs were 72% and 58% of the steel reinforced concrete slab with the same dimensions, respectively. Results of the numerical analysis for these slabs using a commercial program, midas FEA, showed that the load-deflection curve could be simulated well until the shear failure of the slabs, but the applied loads and the deflections continuously increased even beyond the shear failure loads.
