Lap joint Laser Welding of Hot Stamped Ultra High Strength Steel for Automotive Application (자동차용 핫스탬핑 고강도강 판재의 겹치기 레이저용접)

  • Recently ultra high strength steels(UHSS) has been widely applied to the structural or safety components in the automotive industry. Specially, hot stamping boron steel 22MnB5 has shown the crash-resistant characteristics when applying to bumpers and pillars. Lap joint Laser welding of the hot stamped and die quenched sheets of Boron steel was carried out using 3kW Nd/YAG laser. The appropriate Lap joint laser welding conditions were founded separately for four lap joint combinations. The lower sheest is a hot stamped sheet in common and the upper sheet is selected among the hot stamped steel and high strength steels such as SPCC, 370MPa, and 590MPa grade high strength steels. Cross bead sections and local hardening and softening were observed as well as tensile-shear test results.

Design Guideline for Press Tool Structure of Ultra-high Strength Steel Part with Shape Optimization Technique (형상최적화 기법을 이용한 초고강도강판 성형용 프레스 금형의 구조설계 가이드라인)

  • In this paper, an effective design procedure was proposed to design the rib of die structure for auto-body member with ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) having ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.5 GPa. From analysis results of the die structure, structural safety of the die was evaluated with information such as displacement and von-Mises stress. It was concluded that the casting part could be designed in order to reduce tool deformation. A design guideline of the die structure was proposed, especially for the rib structure in the casting part with an optimization scheme and local reinforcement concept. Simulation result following the design guideline fully explained that stability of the tool structure could be obtained simultaneously with weight minimization.

  • PVD 기술이 반도체나 LCD 등의 전자산업에서 주력기술로 성장하는 과정에서, 금속 Strip 소재에 연속적으로 PVD 코팅을 실시하기 위한 연구개발과 상용화 노력이 진행되어왔다. 이미 1960년대에 강판 표면에 Al을 증착시키기 위한 공정이 상용화된 실적이 있었지만, 전기도금이나 용융도금에 비해 기술의 확산이 빠르게 이루어지지 않았고, 1980년대 후반에 일본에서 전기도금을 대체하기 위한 공정으로 상용화공정을 건설하였지만, 결국은 경제성을 확보하지 못하여 도태되는 과정을 겪어왔다. 하지만, 1990년대 이후 유럽과 한국을 중심으로 연속코팅기술에 대한 연구개발이 꾸준히 진행되어 왔으며, 최근 이슈가 되고 있는 자동차용 초고강도강의 코팅기술로 PVD 기술이 재조명되고 있다.

A Study on the forming Process of Automobile Center floor Side Member using Ultra High Strength Steel of 980MPa (980MPa급 초고강도강판을 이용한 센터 플로 사이드 멤버의 성형공정 연구)

  • Ultra high strength steels(UHSS) are widely used to fill the needs of lightweight part for automobile, and the control of springback is very important (actor in sheet metal forming using UHSS. In this study, to lighten the center floor side member(CFSM) which is normally manufactured using $600{\sim}800MPa$ steel sheet, new design of the manufacturing process for CFSM using APFC980 has been proposed. To accomplish this goal, the influence of process variables such as die corner radius and die wall angle on the springback were investigated using FE-analysis. In order to insure the validity of FE-analysis, the springback results of FE-analysis was verified with prototype product.

Experimental Determination of Friction Characteristics for Advanced High Strength Steel Sheets (초고강도강판 마찰특성의 실험적 규명)

  • The friction coefficients of advanced high strength steel sheets were experimentally determined. In the friction test, the pulling and holding forces acting on the sheet for various friction conditions, such as lubricant viscosity, pulling speed, blank holding pressure, sheet surface roughness, and hardness of the sheet were measured and the friction coefficient was calculated based on Coulomb's friction law. While the friction coefficient, generally, decreases as the value of friction factor increases, the factor associated with the sheet surface roughness shows U shape behavior for the friction coefficient. Furthermore, the relationship between friction coefficient and the wear volume, which was computed for the roughness of both sheet surfaces and the friction area, is linearly proportional.

  • In the automobile industry, in order to increase the fuel efficiency and conform to the safety regulations, it is necessary to make the vehicles as light as possible. Therefore, it is crucial to manufacture dual phase steels, complex phases steels, MS steels, TRIP steels, and TWIP from high strength steels with a tensile strength of 700Mpa or more. In order to apply ultra-high tensile strength steel to the body, the welding process is essential. Resistance spot welding, which is advantageous in terms of its cost, is used in more than 80% of cases in body welding. It is generally accepted that ultra-high tensile strength steel has poor weldability, because its alloy element content is increased to improve its strength. In the case of the resistance spot welding of ultra-high tensile steel, it has been reported that the proper welding condition area is reduced and interfacial fracture and partial interfacial fracture occur in the weld zone. Therefore, research into the welding quality judgment that can predict the defect and quality in real time is being actively conducted. In this study, the dynamic resistance of the weld was monitored using the secondary circuit process variables detected during resistance spot welding, and the factors necessary for the determination of the welding quality were extracted from the dynamic resistance pattern. The correlations between the extracted factors and the weld quality were analyzed and a regression analysis was carried out using highly correlated pendulums. Based on this research, a regression model that can be applied to the field was proposed.

Analysis of Springback and Die Material Suitability in the UHSS Sheet Forming Process (초고강도 강판 성형 시의 스프링백 해석 및 금형 소재 적합성 검토)

  • In this study, formability and springback behavior of 1.5 GPa grade ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) sheet were predicted through the finite element simulation, and structural stability of the forming dies was verified by the coupled forming-structural analysis. Uniaxial tension and uniaxial tension-compression tests were performed to obtain experimental data for modeling the springback properties of the sheet material. The springback values predicted by simulation were compared with those from actual measurements. The results calculated from the kinematic hardening model were found to be much more accurate than those from the isotropic hardening model. Deformation of the forming die and springback of the product were calculated by the coupled forming-structural analysis. The higher the strength of the die material, the smaller the surface displacement of the die and the springback of the product. The internal stresses of the dies made of three materials, FC300, FCD550 and STD11 were compared with the yield stress of each material. The results provided a basis for determining the most suitable material for each part of the die set. As a result, simulation techniques have been established for predicting formability and springback in the UHSS sheet forming process.

Effect of Slide Motion Control and Friction Characteristics on Formability of Ultra High Strength Steel (초고강도강판의 성형성에 미치는 슬라이드 모션 제어와 마찰특성의 영향)

  • Although the application of high strength steel is increasing to cope with the various updated regulations of automobiles, high strength steel sheets are difficult to formulate due to the high tensile strength and low elongation of those materials. In this study, the slide motion was controlled using a servo press in order to improve the formability of the process of manufacturing ultra-high strength steel of above 1.2GPa. Also, the friction characteristics of the slid motion were investigated through a high speed friction test. The slide motion was optimized by adjusting the number of steps, the rising start position and the rise height of the slide. At the same time, it is noted that the optimal slide motion increased the forming depth by about 40%. From the results of the high speed friction test, the application of the slide motion reduces friction resistance, thereby improving friction characteristics and improving formability.

  • Currently, studies on weight reduction and fuel efficiency increase are the most important topics in the automotive industry and many studies are under way. Among them, weight reduction is the best way to raise fuel efficiency and solve environmental pollution and resource depletion. Materials such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon curing materials can be found in lightweight materials. Among these, research on improvement of bonding technology and manufacturing method of materials and improvement of material properties through study of ultrahigh strength steel sheet is expected to be the biggest part of material weight reduction. As the strength of the ultra hight strength steel sheet increases during forming, it is difficult to obtain the dimensional accuracy as the elastic restoring force increases compared to the hardness or high strength steel sheet. It is known that the spring back phenomenon is affected by various factors depending on the raw material and processing process. We have conducted analytical evaluations and studies to analyze the springback that occurs according to the cross-sectional shape of the ultra high tensile steel sheet.

Wear Life Prediction of CrN Coating Layer on the Press Tool for Stamping the Ultra High Strength Steel Sheet (초고강도강판 프레스성형용 금형의 CrN 코팅층 마모수명 예측)

  • In this study, a wear test method was proposed to predict the wear life of the CrN layer coated on the surface of the press tools for manufacturing the auto-parts with ultra high strength steel (UHSS) with a tensile strength of 1.5 GPa. The pin-on-disc type wear test was carried out to confirm the feasibility and the reproducibility of the wear amount according to the test conditions such as the normal force, the sliding velocity, and the sliding speed. The test conditions were obtained from the finite element stamping analysis and the wear simulation. With the wear amount from the wear test, a prediction model of the wear depth in the CrN coating layer was proposed according to the test conditions with the design of experiments such as Taguchi method and the response surface method. The derived prediction model was then compared to the result of the Archard wear model, fully describing that the proposed model can effectively predict the wear life of the press tools for the auto-parts with UHSS.
