  • Recently, testing equipment which can run resonant column test altogether with the torsional shear test at the very highly controlled condition was developed at the University of Texas at Austin(U.S.A). With this equipment, the effects of high amplitude pre-straining vibrations on the dynamic properties of clean sands were studied. Tests showed the following results. Low amplitude shear modulus was gradually increased with little void ratio change as the number of high amplitude vibration cycles increased. Variation of volumetric strain with confining pressure for the pre -strained specimen under vibration was smaller than that of fresh specimen. Also the slope of the diagram for shear modulus and confining pressure relationship of the prestrained specimen was smaller than that of fresh specimens. These results agreed well with the analytical results.

  • A new constitutive model is proposed for normally consolidated clays. A main skeleton of the proposed model is based on the concepts of the incremental stress-strain theory by Roscoe and Poorooshasb. The equation of the undrained stress path is formulated by introducing the new pore pressure parameter(C), which is the slope of the linear line in the plot of the normalized pore pressure against the stress ratio. Once the stress increment along the constant stress ratio path (followed by untrained stress path) is know, the volumetric strains are calculated from the linear characteristics between void ratio and logarithm of the mean normal stress for any stress ratio. Then the incremental shear strains are successfully predicted by applying the flow rule derived in the modified theory by Roscoe and Burland.

  • The objective of this study is to design of a cooling system of the over-molding mold for a socket component of an automobile wiper by performing numerical analyses. Hot spots in which the temperature distributions are higher than those of other region, were estimated by an initial over-molding analysis for the initial design of the mold. On the basis of the initial over-molding analysis, two types of cooling system designs with a linear cooling channel and a volumetric heat sink, were considered to improve the cooling characteristics of hot spots. To obtain an appropriate cooling system design, the effects of the diameter and the position of the linear cooling channels on the cooling characteristics and the product qualities were quantitatively examined. In addition, the effects of the design of the volumetric heat sink on the cooling characteristics and deformation distributions in the molded product were investigated. The results of the over-molding analysis of the two types of cooling systems showed that the multi-sliced over-molding mold with a volumetric heat sink can improve both the product quality and the cooling characteristics of the mold.

  • The large underground structure under earthquake is affected more by soil dynamic characteristic and volume of structure than by structural dynamic characteristic itself. Therefore, it is the purpose of research that the aseismic analysis for caverns including various aseismic analysis factors (rock quality-Q value, soil dynamic characteristic, shape ratio $&$ volume, underground structural dynamic characteristic, and aseismic level) are applied by using the numerical analysis program (SAUS; seismic analysis of underground structures). The result of research is stated that maximum strain, maximum moment, and maximum shear are not sensitive with respect to shape ratio. However those values are sensitive with respect to Q value, volume of underground structure and aseismic level. Based on the results of this research, the assessment for the influence factors of aseismic analysis for large underground structure could be possible.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of ultra-high strength concrete columns with 100 MPa compressive strength for the requirement of ACI provisions. Eight 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the cross section $300{\times}300mm$ and the aspect ratio 4. The main variables are axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. Consequently, to secure the ductile behavior of 100 MPa ultra-high strength concrete columns, ACI provisions for the requirement of transverse steel may considered axial load level and the details of transverse reinforcement.

  • It has been pointed out that the collapses of unsaturated road embankments caused by earthquake are attributed to high water content caused by the seepage of the underground water and/or the rainfall infiltration. Hence, it is important to study influences of water content on the dynamic stability and deformation mode of unsaturated road embankments for development of a proper design scheme including an effective reinforcement to prevent severe damage. This study demonstrates dynamic centrifugal model tests with different water contents to investigate the effect of water content on deformation and failure behaviors of unsaturated road embankments. Based on the measurement of displacement, the pore water pressure and the acceleration during dynamic loading, dynamic behavior of the unsaturated road embankments with about optimum water content and the higher water content than the optimum one have been examined. In addition, an image analysis has revealed the displacement field and the distributions of strains in the road embankment, by which deformation mode of the road embankment with higher water content has been clarified. It has been confirmed that in the case of higher water content the settlement of the crown is large mainly owing to the volume compression underneath the crown, while the small confining pressure at the toe and near the slope surface induces large shear deformation with volume expansion.

  • This research is focused on the inducement of the constitutive equation considering the creep strain component and on the development of a finite element method program. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the design of construction structures or to the construction management in soft clay ground through predicting the long-term strain of construction structures reasonably bused on the above program. Modified Cam Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. And in the calculation of the creep sprain, the secondary coefficient of consolidation C. was applied for considering the volumetric creep element and the constants m, $\alpha$, A were rosed by the empirical creep equation proposed by Singh 8E Mitchell for considering the deviatoric creep element. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the theoretical solution and the experimental results. And the applicability of the developed program was found to be reliable from the sensitive analysis of each parameters used in this study. According to the results obtained from the application of the program on the field measurement data, the estimated values by the program were found with be consistent with the actual values. And from the analysis of the displacement of embankments, the case of considering the creep behavior induced much fower errors than the case of neglecting it. But the results obtained from considering the volumetric creep behavior only were slightly underestimated the results from considering the deviator creep behavior showed the slightly overestimated values. Therefore, it remains the task of further studios to develop the laboratory test devices to obtain the reliable creep parameters, and to select the appropriate soil parameters, etc.

  • The hot deformation behaviour of particulate reinforced aluminium 6061 Al composite were investigated by hot compression tests in the temperature range from 623K to 823K with strain rate of 10$^{-3}$ ~5.0 S$^{-1}$ . The effect of reinforced particulate volume fraction, mean diameter on the high temperature flow stress has also been studied. Experimental results showed that the increase in the volume fraction of reinforcement contributed to the rising of yield stress, but the stress above the yield point appeared to be steady state at all volume fractions. The apparent activation energy for deformation was 290KJ/mo1 for unreinforced 6061 Al, 327KJ/mo1 for 6061 Al-20vo1.% SiC composite and 531KJ/mo1 for 6061 Al-20vo1.%A1$_2$O$_3$composite. It appeared that $Al_2$O$_3$reinforced composites was more difficult to hot deform.

  • Rebound, storage and loss modulus, and tan ${\delta}$ were investigated on cured rubbers with various ratios of sulfur to accelerator and the volume fraction of carbon black in the cured rubbers. The rebound was increased as the sulfur to accelerator ratio and the volume fraction of carbon black decreased. The storage modulus decreased as the loading of carbon black and the strain increased regardless of the cure systems. The network structure formed by filler-filler interaction was destroyed above 6% strain regardless of the loading of carbon black, because constant storage modulus was shown at the higher strain than 3% for $40{\sim}50phr$ loading of carbon black and at the higher strain than 6% for 60 phr and above loading of carbon black. Little effect on loss modulus was found at the low loading of carbon black, but the peak of loss modulus was shown at 1% strain as the loading of carbon black was increased. Tan ${\delta}$ increased as the loading of carbon black and the strain were increased regardless of the cure system, and maximum tan ${\delta}$ was shown at 2% strain regardless of the loading of carbon black.
