Objectives: The purpose of this study was to systematically analyze and examine the relationship between the number of lost teeth and quality of life (QoL) among elderly. Methods: Papers published in Korean and English between 2000 and 2020 were searched. Relevant papers were selected by two independent readers according to predefined exclusion criteria. Quality assessment and consistency tests were conducted using ROBIS. Results: Twelve of the 854 studies were targeted, and the analysis confirmed that tooth loss was related to a decrease in the QoL in 11 studies. Tooth loss negatively affected the QoL among the elderly. However, one study indicated that the QoL and number of teeth were not related. Rather, dry mouth affected the QoL, and cavities caused by oral dryness led to tooth loss. Most of the selected studies indicated that the QoL of elderly individuals with a single tooth was higher than that of those with no teeth. Conclusions: This study provides strong evidence that tooth loss in the elderly is associated with impairment of QoL.
Objectives: This purpose of this study was to examine the trends in interventional research and analyze the contents and results of intervention through a systematic literature review of the domestic research literature, suggesting the effect of an oral care program on elementary school students. Methods: A total of 262 articles were retrieved initially, and the duplicate articles were then removed, excluded after screening titles, abstracts, and full-text articles. Finally, a total of 16 papers were used in the review. Results: The study included 9 articles with the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design and 7 with the one-group pretest-posttest design. All articles were of non-randomized studies. The most common index of the interventional effect was dental plaque. Further, oral health behaviors and knowledge, perception, self-efficacy, and DMFT index were common indices. In the quality assessment, in the "blinding of outcome assessment" among six items of ROBANS, 12 studies showed a high risk of bias. Conclusions: In order to develop an interventional oral health care program for elementary school students and evaluate the effectiveness, a strict research design and qualitative improvement of research reports are required, and continuous research should be conducted to develop a systematic protocol.
Purpose: This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis designed to evaluate the effects of breastfeeding individual visit program. Methods: Based on the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA), a systematic search was conducted using four core electronic databases from October 28, 2018 to November 14, 2018. The topics of breastfeeding individual visit program were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the effects of intervention were meta-analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3 software. Results: A total of 13 studies were included in the review and 12 were included for meta-analysis. Breastfeeding individual visit programs were found to be more effective in breastfeeding rates, attitude, skill and self-efficacy compared to group education or non-education. Conclusion: Effective breastfeeding education can help mothers to start and sustain breastfeeding. Breastfeeding individual visits programs that are more effective than group education to maintain breastfeeding for pregnant women should be developed and applied.
Purpose: The purpose of this review was to analyze the characteristics and effectiveness of online-based intervention for infertile women. Methods: We established the PICO (Participant-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome) strategy and conducted a systematic review of 7 literatures retrieved from 3 electronic databases of Ovid-Medline, Ovid-Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Two investigators independently extracted the data and assessed the quality of included studies using Cochrane risk of bias. Results: The pregnancy outcome showed that higher total risk scores (TRS) about lifestyle behavior was significantly associated with lower chance of pregnancy (aHR 0.79, 95% CI 0.72~0.85). Stress was significantly decreased in experimental groups receiving online-based interventions (p<.05). Depression score was significantly lower in groups receiving additional interventions besides on-line interventions than those who used online-based intervention only. The other outcomes, including anxiety, self-efficacy, helpfulness of intervention, perceived social support, and knowledge scores were not significantly different within and between groups in overall. Characteristics of the interventions were heterogeneous. Conclusion: There is evidence that online-based intervention in infertile women enhances the pregnancy and reduces stress levels.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify nursing interventions for the postpartum breast care of mothers and determine the effectiveness of interventions for breast pain and engorgement by systematic review. Methods: Eight national and international databases were reviewed to retrieve and collect randomized controlled trial and controlled clinical trial literature published up to March 2015. Two reviewers independently selected the studies and performed data abstraction and validation. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane criteria. A meta-analysis of the studies was performed to analyze the data. Results: The meta-analysis showed that breast massage, along with routine breast care, resulted in a 3.52-point reduction in pain on a 10-point visual analogue scale. Meta-analysis of therapy with cold cabbage leaves and routine breast care showed a pain reduction of 0.54 points. Meta-analysis of cold cabbage leaf application in the experimental group versus cold compress therapy in the comparison group showed a pain reduction of 0.44 points. Meta-analysis of cold cabbage leaf application and routine breast care showed an engorgement reduction of 0.67 points. Conclusion: The results of the analysis of 12 articles showed that hot and cold compresses, breast massage, and cabbage application were effective for postpartum breast pain and engorgement.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify trends of nursing research on disaster for nursing students in Korea through a systematic review. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across international and domestic electronic databases, and 13 of 506 studies were identified for this review. Results: The most commonly used variables in the study were 'disaster nursing competency (23.5%)' and 'disaster awareness (20.6%)'. In addition, the major factors influencing the disaster nursing competency of nursing students were analyzed as 'disaster preparedness'. However, many tools were developed for the needs of researchers rather than those that were sufficiently valid and reliable. Also, most studies did not use the theoretical framework. Conclusion: There is necessary to develop an instrument with confirmed reliability and validity to measure disaster nursing competency of nursing students. Finally, disaster education and research should be conducted based on the theoretical framework to enhance the disaster nursing competency of nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reduce loneliness through a systematic review by analyzing the effectiveness, composition and method of non-face-to-face services on the elderly living in the local community. Methods: From June 11 to 15, 2021, related papers were searched using six databases: Ovid-Medline, Ovid-Embase, Cochrane library, KISS, Koreamed, and RISS. Two authors independently assessed the quality of selected studies and data was synthesized. Results: Non-face-to-face services promoted loneliness and social isolation, social support and quality of life, other emotional responses, attitudes and usability, and diet and exercise. As the composition and method of services are being tried in various ways, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive service using ICT to provide systematic intervention to the elderly in the local community. Conclusion: Reflecting the difficulties in implementing face-to-face services due to COVID-19, it is expected to be used as basic data for developing comprehensive non-face-to-face services that meet the major needs of the elderly people and maintain the continuity of care.
Purpose: This study aimed to systematically review the contents and effectiveness of education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcer among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Korea. Methods: Six electronic databases were searched using search terms, and 748 articles were identified. Ten articles were eligible based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Article quality was evaluated using a critical evaluation checklist for manuscripts before performing the systematic review. Results: Although education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcers have been continuously studied for 20 years, the number of studies is small, and to our knowledge, there have been no studies reporting on the subsequent prevalence of foot ulcers or amputations. While the effect of these education programs on knowledge (ES=1.23) and self-management behavior (ES=.96) was shown to be statistically significant, it was not shown to be significant in preventing diabetic foot ulcers (ES=.03). Conclusion: The actual preventive effect on the prevalence of foot ulcers, through education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcer could not be determined. Our findings highlight a potential need for studies aimed at developing effective programs to improve education on preventing diabetic foot ulcers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish the foundations for the application of appropriate programs for pain reduction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: The literature on patients with rheumatoid arthritis were found on an electronic search site for South Korean academic papers. The search terms "rheumatism" and "rheumatoid arthritis" were used independently. The combined terms "rheumatism and pain" and "rheumatoid arthritis and pain" were also used. For the meta-analysis, the R version 3.5.1 program was utilized. Results: The meta-analysis of eight papers showed a large effect size of -4.11. The programs were most effective in the order of aquatic exercise, aromatherapy, self-help education, muscle strength exercises, and tai chi. Conclusion: This study could provide the basis for presenting appropriate programs for pain management in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Purpose: This study aims to systematically clarify and enhance the understanding of osteoporosis prevention interventions based on Health Belief Model (HBM). The analysis includes HBM constructs, intervention characteristics, and outcomes from prior studies. Methods: We extensively searched eight electronic databases to identify peer-reviewed studies that implemented HBM-based interventions for osteoporosis prevention until June 2023. Results: Initially, 638 articles were identified, and after a rigorous evaluation process, 11 articles were included in the evidence synthesis. The analysis revealed that HBM-based interventions significantly improved likelihood of taking action including knowledge, HBM constructs and adopting preventive behaviors such as calcium intake and exercise. However, most interventions included in this study did not fully encompass all five HBM constructs or specify the particular components adopted. Conclusion: There is a need for additional research and intervention refinement for a more comprehensive understanding of osteoporosis preventive interventions. This should involve a concerted effort to incorporate all HBM constructs into the context of osteoporosis prevention. Thus, more effective interventions promoting optimal preventive behaviors and reducing the burden of osteoporosis can be developed.
