This study was conducted to observe the spawning behavior and early life histroy of elegant blenny, Omobranchus elegans reared in the laboratory. The elegant blenny were caught at Dolsan lsland, Yeosu-si, Jeollanamdo from June in 2012. As a result of observeation, male fish attracted female continuously and guide lead to spawning site and clean the surface of inner pant in oyster shell or barnacle shell. Female left after spawning and male protected their eggs until they had hatched out. The fertilized eggs were spherical in shape (mean diameter: 1.06 mm; mean oil globule diameter: 0.24 mm) and transparent. Larvae hatched at 203 hrs 40 mins after fertilization at
The present survey was conducted to provide basic information on Hanwoo calf management. Eight hundred and sixty-two Hanwoo breeding farms from all nine provinces were surveyed via personal interviews. The percentages of farms categorized by herd size were 30.5%, 32.8%, 26.0% and 10.7% for <50 heads, 51-100 heads, 101-200 heads, and >200 heads, respectively. More than 50% of farms offered calf starter at 6-10 days of age, showing that calf starter was offered relatively at an earlier age. Calf starter was replaced every three days by 30.1% of farms. The percentages of farms replacing starter weekly (19.2%) were even higher than those of replacing starter daily (18.8%), suggesting that the frequency of replacing starter needs to be increased to maintain starter freshness and to increase starter intake. About one-third of farms offered forage at 6-10 days of age and 21% of farms offered even at 1-5 days of age although it has been well known that forage does not contain either nutrient density or nutrient profile necessary to stimulate rumen papillae development, especially before weaning. Furthermore, about half of farms used rice straw with calf starter. Water was offered relatively at an earlier age (1-5 days of age) by 55% of farms. Deciding when to wean calves should be based on starter intake rather than age but less than 50% of farms decided weaning age by starter intake. In conclusions, to reduce weaning age of Hanwoo calves by rapid rumen papillae development it is necessary to provide fresh starter and water by increasing frequency of starter replacing and water trough cleaning and not to feed forage before weaning.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of two dry matter levels of liquid swine manure on dry matter yield and nutritive value of Italian ryegrass, rye and oats, and the chemical characteristics of soil in Jeju. This experiment tested in split plot design. Three forage crops (Italian ryegrass, rye and oats) were the main plot and four fertilizers (no fertilizer=T0, chemical fertilizer=T1, liquid swine manure with DM 2.7%=T2 and liquid swine manure with DM 5.9 %=T3) were the sub plots. Yield and nutrient contents of forage crops and soil properties were determined. Application of liquid swine manure containing 5.9% dry matter resulted in highest DM yield in all three forage crops species compared with the other treatments (p<0.01). Crude protein content(%) and crude protein yield(kg/ha) of forage crops were highest in rye compared with the other forage crops species(p<0.01). K and Mg contents of soil were higher(p<0.01) in rye than in the other species while Na contents was higher(p<0.01) in Italian ryegrass than others. Mg content of soil appeared higher in rye than in the others and higher(p<0.05) in forage crops applied with liquid manure containing 2.7% DM compared with the other species.
The authors developed 28 needs assessment tools for integrated assessment centered on needs, which is the core element in care management for the elderly in home. Also, the authors collected the assessment data of 676 elderly persons in home from 120 centers under the Korea Association of Senior Welfare Centers by using the needs assessment tools, and finally developed needs extraction algorithm through decision tree analysis in data mining to identify their actual needs and provide social welfare service suitable for such needs. The needs extraction algorithm for 28 needs of the elderly in home are summarized in
