Several experiments have been done to investigate the removal of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) synthetic gas from biogas streams by means of chemical absorption and chemical reaction with 0.1-1 M Fe/EDTA solution. The roles of Fe/EDTA were studied to enhance the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide because of oxidizing by chelate. The motivation of this investigation is first to explore the feasibility of enhancing the toxic gas treatment in the biogas facility. The biogas purification strategy affords many advantages. For instance, the process can be performed under mild environmental conditions and at low temperature, and it removes hydrogen sulfide selectively. The end product of separation is elemental sulfur, which is a stable material that can be easily disposed with minor potential for further pollution. As the Fe-EDTA concentration increased, the conversion rate of hydrogen sulfide increased because of the high stability of Fe-EDTA complex. pH as an important environmental factor was 9.0 for the stability of chemical complex in the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide.
Pulp made from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was bleached in element chlorine free (ECF) sequence. The peroxide bleaching process for the final bleaching process has been introduced in order to reduce the use of chlorine dioxide. Prior to peroxide bleaching, different chelating chemicals were applied. When 4.5% of the total chlorine dioxide was used, bleached SCB pulp using additional DTPA chelate stage (DEDQP) resulted in 87.0% of the ISO brightness. However, bleached pulp using simultaneous stage of DTPA chelate and chlorine dioxide (DE(DQ)P) was reached at 83.9% of the ISO brightness. The viscosity of DEDQP bleached pulp was 25.6 cPs, and the one of DE(DQ)P bleached pulp was 21.9 cPs. Decreasing of chelate effect by chlorine dioxide led to a decrease in the final brightness and a lower viscosity. But simultaneous stage of EDTA chelate and chlorine dioxide (DE(DQ)P) led to higher final brightness (87.0% ISO) and higher viscosity (25.8 cPs) than those of the $DEDQ_{EDTA}P$ bleached pulp (86.4% ISO, 25.2 cPs).

$H_2S$ is a detrimental impurity that must be removed for upgrading biogas to biomethane. This study investigates an economic method to mitigate $H_2S$ content, combining scrubbing and aeration. The desulfurization experiments were performed in a laboratory apparatus using EDTA-Fe or landfill leachate as the catalyst and metered mixture of 50-52% (v/v) $CH_4$, 32-33% (v/v) $CO_2$ and 500-1,000 ppmv $H_2S$ balanced by $N_2$ using the C city landfill gas. Dissolved iron concentration in the liquid medium significantly affected the oxidation efficiency of sulfide. Iron components in landfill leachate, which would be available in a biogas/landfill gas utilization facility, was compatible with an external iron chelate. More than 70% of $H_2S$ was removed in a contact time of 9 seconds at iron levels at or over 28 mM. The scrubbing-aeration process would be a feasible and easy-to-operate technology for biogas purification.
The purpose of this study was to find out required time for recovery of nutritional disorder by Fe-DTPA treatment in induced Fe-deficient tomato cultivars and to select stable Fe-chelate in high pH of nutrient solution. The pH levels of nutrient solution were amended with 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Then Fe-EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ferric-sodium salt), Fe-DTPA (Sodium ferric diethylenetriamine pentaacetate), and Fe-EDDHA (Ethylenediamine-N,N-bis (2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) ferric-sodium salt)) were treated as Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration. The Fe-DTPA and Fe-EDDHA were stable in the nutrient solution of pH 6.0~8.0 but Fe-EDTA in nutrient solution of pH 8.0 was to become insoluble by 25%. The Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ as Fe-DTPA was treated for recovery of Fe deficient tomato seedlings. In case of Redyoyo and Supersunroad cultivars, total chlorophyll and Fe contents of leaves were recovered as much as those of normal leaves in 5 days. The Rafito cultivar for complete recovery was taken 7 days. When Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ as Fe-DTPA was supplied to Fe-deficient tomato seedlings, in geotype, heme oxigenase recovered as much as normal leaves in 24 hours in the Rafito and Redyoyo. However, it was not remarkable difference by elapsed time in the Supersunroad.
This study was conducted to study the properties of the water-soluble natural chelating agents from garbage compost and activated sewage sludge responsible for Fe chelation, which is closely associated with the effectiveness in correcting iron chlorosis in plant. The water-soluble fraction of these materials was fractionated by menas of Sephadex gel filtration and the fractions of Fe chehates were traced by radioactive $^{59}Fe$. The fractions were examined by ultraviolet and infrared. spectroscopy and stability constants for Fe. The water-soluble fraction from garbage compost was separated by Sephadex G-25 into approximately four fractions. Most of the added $^{59}Fe$ was associated with fraction I, which appeared at the void volume. Further fractionation by Sephadex G-50 indicated that the molecular weight of water-soluble chelating agents is in the approximate range of 5000 to 10,000. The water-soluble fraction from activated sewage sludge gave six fractions by Sephadex G-25. Most of the added $^{59}Fe$ was found in the fraction I,II, and III, The molecular weights of most chelating agents associated with $^{59}Fe$ appeared to be less than 5,000 and those of fraction I that appeared at the void volume was in the range of 5,000 to 1,000. Discrepancy between radio activity count and UV absorption indicated the heterogeneity of the fractions obtained by Sephadex gel filtration. Ultraviolet absorption spectra of all fractions separated by Sephadex G-25 and containing chelating agents showed no differences. Fraction IV and V of sewage extract showed absorption maxima and shifting similar to nucleic acid components suggesting the presence of decomposition products of nucleic acid. Similarity fraction VI contained phenolic type amino acid groups. Fraction I of compost extract contained most of the added $^{59}Fe$ and showed weak but extra definite absorption in the 1230, and $1270cm^{-1}$ region, suggesting that extra oxygen groups in polyphenolic structure were probably involved in Fe chelation. In sewage extract, fraction I,II, and III in which most of the $^{59}Fe$ was found, showed strong definite polypeptide absorption in the region of $1540cm^{-1}$ due to NH deformation and C-N stretching of amide groups in the peptidebond. These extra functional groups in fraction I, II, and III appeared to be associated with Fe chelation. The other fractions, not associated with $^{59}Fe$, still have carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, suggesting that these functional groups in these water extracts may not independently form the Fe chelates. Precipitation of ferric hydroxide precluded measuring the stability constants for Fe-chelates. However, the formation constants for Zn chelates as log K values for compost extract and sewage extract at pH 4.0 from which the strength of chelation with Fe could be presumed, were 8.23, and 9.75, respectively, indicating strong complexation with metals. The chelating capacity of compost extract containing 6.5 g organic matter per liter was 0.82 mM, and that of sewage extract containing 5.3 g per liter was 0. 64 mM.

2-Hydroxybenzaldehyde-5-nitro-pyridylhydrazone (2HB-5NPH) was synthesized and its application to the spectrophotometric determination of iron was studied. The reagent reacts with iron in the pH range 6.0-7.5 to form a yellow coIored 1:2 chelate which is very stable in methanol solution. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range 0.05∼2.0 ${\mu}gmL^{-1}$ iron and separation procedure using a short column filled with Amberlite XAD-7 nonionic chelating resin is proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of traces of iron. The influence of several ions as interference was discussed. The separation of Fe(III) ion from the mix-ture solution were carried out with the buffer solution (pH 5.0) and 0.25M HCl as eluents.
Effects of iron and/or chelator addition on primary production in the equatorial Upwelling system were studied during the TOGA(Tropical oceans and Global Atmosphere) and EPOCS (Equatorial Pacific ocean Climate Studies) cruises in June and November-December of 1989. Changes in the phytoplankton biomass and the degree of iron stress were estimated using the changes in vivo fluorescence before and after the addition of DCMU, which is an inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transposer system. Nitrate uptake was measured using /SUP 45/N labeled KNO$_3$ to estimate the new production. When samples were taken from the Upwelling area where nitrate concentration was higher than 5 uM, there were significant differences between the control and cheated iron treatments in vivo fluorescence and in nitrate uptake capacity. However, CFC (Cellular fluorescence capacity) did not show any significant difference between the control and treatments until nutrient limitation becomes severse and cells become shifted-down. Outside of the Upwelling area where surface nitrate concentration was low (below 0.5 uM), there was no significant difference between the control and treatments in vivo fluorescence and CFC. It is evident that primary and new production in the equatorial Pacific Upwelling region are limited by the availability of iron. However, the physiology of phytoplankton indigenous to this region does not appear to be iron stressed judging from CFC values.

Liquid Chromatographic behavior of Pd(II) in Isonitrosoethylacetoacetate lmine, $Pd(IEAA-NR)_2$ (R=H, $CH_3$, $C_2H_5$, $n-C_3H_7$, $C_6H_5-CH_2$, $n-C_4H_9$) chelates were investigated by reversed-phase HPLC on Micropak MCH-5 column using methanol/water as mobile phase. The optimum conditions for the separation of $Pd(IEAA-NR)_2$ chelates were examined with respect to the effect of the flow rate, sample solvent, mobile phase strength and column temperature. It wass found that metal chelates were properly eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The dependence of the logarithm of capacity factor(k') on the volume fraction of water in the binary mobile phase was examined. Also, the dependence of k' on the liquid-liquid extration distribution ratio($D_c$) in methanol-water/n-alkane extration system was investigated. Both kinds of dependence are linear, which susggests that the retention of the electroneutral metal chelate is largely due to the solvophobic effect. Standard adsorption enthalpy changes (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and standard adsorption entropy changes (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) of Pd(II) Isonitrosoethylacetoacetate imine chelates on Micropak MCH-5 column were calculated by measuring capacity factor with changing temperature of the column.

Iron (Fe) is an important micronutrient for the health and growth of plants. Iron is usually provided by fertilizers, and iron-chelate fertilizers are well absorbed by plants. This study presents the plant growth-promoting effects of a new functional iron fertilizer, Fe-chelating crab shell powder (FCSP), which is generated from the chelation of Fe ions with crab shell powder. Iron chelate was derived from spent pickling liquor, which is rich in reductive iron, iron(II) oxide. To analyze the effects of FCSP on plant growth, we treated lettuce with several concentrations of FCSP in both lab- and field-scale experiments. In the lab-scale test, the treatment of 50 ppm of FCSP highly promoted growth and resulted in increases in the size, weight, number and chlorophylls content of leaves of plants compared to the treatment of crab shell powder. Fifty ppm of FCSP also increased the size and weight of leaves up to 2 times compared to the application of chemical fertilizer and/or compost in field conditions. In addition, the FCSP treatment resulted in the highest ion uptake of Fe in lettuce leaves. Moreover, FCSP led to increases in the amounts of Fe, Ca, available phosphorus and organic matter in treated soil, indicating that soil quality was improved. Taken together, our results demonstrate that FCSP promotes lettuce growth via enhancement of Fe availability and improves soil quality. Therefore, FCSP can be utilized as a new functional iron fertilizer.
