Upgrade of $TiO_2$ by Carbon Reduction of Ilmenite (Ilmenite의 炭素還元에 의한 $TiO_2$ 品位 向上 硏究)

  • It has been carried our for establishing the methodology to upgrade $TiO_2$ by carbothermal reduction of iron oxide in ilmenite. Based on present experimental results, the possibility for substitution with rutile has been investigated. It could by proposed that the 2 wt.% $FeCl_3$ of sample and carbon of 2 equivalents are optimum conditions as a feeding materials. And also appropriate reducing temperature and reduction time were about $1100^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes. The product obtained by the processes of carbon reduction and magnetic separation may be used the substitute mineral of rutile.

Study on Color Formation of Cheolhwa Buncheong Stoneware Glaze by Pigment Raw Materials of Iron Oxides and Firing Conditions (철산화물 안료 원료와 번조조건에 따른 철화분청사기의 유약 발색 연구)

  • In this study, reproducing specimens were made from mixing domestically produced magnetite, clay and non-plastic raw materials to reproduce the pigments used in the manufacture of traditional cheolhwa buncheong stoneware. In order to reveal the color fomation of glaze, 30 specimens with good color development were analyzed scientifically. Magnetite, which is the main raw material of the pigment, is a pigment capable of creating a dark black color in a reducing environment at 1,200℃. However, it reacts with the additionally added lime component and discolors to greenish yellow color in oxidizing environment at 1,230℃. Hematite is not significantly affected by the firing temperature and environment, but develops a dark black color when mixed with clay with iron content of more than 10%. The fluidity of the pigment is determined by R2O3/RO2 value, which also affects the color development. In the microtexture observation, the color formation of the glaze layer and the iron oxide crystals identified some differences depending on the particle size of the pigment and the firing environment. Reproduced specimens made of magnetite are present in the form of aggregates of iron oxide in the interface between glaze layer and slip layer in the oxidizing environment at 1,200℃. However, in the reducing environment, aggregates of iron oxides do not exist in the reproduced specimens, and they are homogeneously distributed in the glaze layer and formed a dark black color. In contrast, hematite-based specimens form dendritic structures in the glaze layer in an oxidizing environment and develop black.

  • 대부분의 기계장치는 철을 주재료로 하여 만들어진다. 철은 본래 순수 금속으로서는 존재하지 않고 주로 다른 원소와 결합하여 산화물로 존재한다. 철 산화물이나 철광석을 재련하면 순수금속(free metal)이 얻어지는데 성능을 개량하기 위해 소량의 다른 원소를 첨가하게 된다. 그러나 금속철을 철산화물로 되돌리려는 자연의 힘이 막강하여 유용한 금속이 못쓰게 된다. 이는 마치 인간이 철광석에서 유용한 금속을 만들어내는 것을 자연이 다시 환원시켜 인간의 성공에 반항하는 것 같다. 미국에서만 매년 철 종류의 부식에 대처하기 위해 사용되는 물질이 60억달러 이상 소요되는 것으로 추산되고 있으며 철 종류 50톤중 1톤이 매년 산화물인 녹으로 바뀌어 지고 있는 실정이다.

  • 원자력 발전소의 2차계통수에는 pH를 조절하여 부식을 억제하기 위해 pH제어제로 약염기성 화학물질을 첨가하고 있다. pH 제어제로 암모니아를 사용하였으나 pH가 낮아 부식생성물이 생성되어 증기발생기의 전열관에 슬러지의 퇴적으로 전열관의 부식이 촉진되므로 pH 제어제를 에탄올아민으로 바꿈으로 슬러지의 생성 및 이동을 억제하고 있다. 그러나 에탄올아민은 암모니아와 물리화학적 성질이 다르므로, 증기발생기에 유입되는 부식생성물의 용해와 흡착, 이온성 불순물의 잠복현상에 미치는 영향이 다르다. 본 연구는 암모니아와 에탄올아민이 온도가 점차 높아짐에 따라 부식생성물에 대찬 용해와 흡착, 이온성불순물의 잠복현상에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 이 실험의 결과로 2차 계통수의 pH 제어제는 ETA가 암모니아보다 증기발생기 슬러지의 철산화물에 더 흡착되어 더 많이 용해되어 퇴적된 슬러지 양을 감소시키므로, 슬러지에 흡착된 불순물의 양을 감소시저 잠복 현상을 억제할 것으로 조사되었다.

  • In this study, $Fe_2O_3$ was added as a flux to decrease melting temperature and refine during melting of Cu powder from scraped surface of the waste PCB (printed circuit board). The effect of $Fe_2O_3$ ratio to Cu powder and temperature on the recovery of Cu and content of impurities were investigated. It was found that the recovery of Cu was increased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and reaction temperature. The contents of O, Si and Fe in Cu phase were also decreased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and temperature. The formation of fayalite ($2FeO{\cdot}SiO_2$) and iron oxides phases in the slag was confirmed by XRD analysis after reaction with $Fe_2O_3$. Therefore, it was considered that the decrease of melting temperature and viscosity of slag by formation of fayalite slag contributed remarkably to the Cu recovery.

  • The eutectic Mg-23.5%Ni alloy was casted by melting and solidification. The powders of Mg-23.5%Ni and (Mg-23.5%Ni)-10% iron oxide were prepared by mechanical grinding of casted Mg-Ni alloy and casted Mg-Ni alloy+oxide, respectively. As milling time increases, hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg-Ni and Mg-Ni-oxide alloy powders increase. The additions of iron oxide to Mg-Ni alloy and Mg-Ni-oxide increase hydriding rates and slightly decrease dehydriding rates.

Material Characteristics of Smelting Slags Produced by Reproduction Experiment of Ancient Iron Smelting : According to Ca Content (고대 제철기술 복원실험에서 산출된 제련재의 칼슘함량에 따른 재료학적 특성)

  • In the ancient iron-making process, a slag former was often added so that iron and other minerals in the ore could be smoothly separated. However, there are insufficient data for judging whether a slag former was added. Thus, in this study, we conducted a smelting experiment to understand the material characteristics of a steel structure that differed depending on the addition of a slag former. It was found that the steel structure produced in the first experiment had a total Fe content of 39.45-52.94 wt%, which decreased to 34.89-38.92 wt% in the second and third experiments. CaO compounds such as calcite, gehlenite, and hercynite appeared, in addition to iron oxides, after the addition of a slag former. As a result of an assessment of whether a slag former was added by comparing the ratio between the components, it was found that the ratio of $CaO/SiO_2$ was 0.42. From a comparative analysis of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ and $CaO/SiO_2$, it was judged that the ratio of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ can be utilized as an index to judge similar systems of smelting process (ore, furnace wall, and fuel).

  • In EAF steelmaking industries, MgO content in slag increases due to the addition of dolomite flux to protect refractory lines of furnaces and improve the desulfurization capability of slag. In addition, coal powder is injected in the molten steel bath to increase the energy efficiency of the process. In this regard, the utilization of waste MgO-C refractory material as a flux was examined because it has high amounts of MgO (>70%) and graphite carbon (>10%). A series of experiments were carried out using industrial EAF slag with added light burnt dolomite and waste MgO refractory material from a Korean steel company. The results for the addition of the two fluxes were similar in terms of slag basicity; therefore, it is expected that waste MgO-C refractory material can successfully replace dolomite flux. In addition, when the waste MgO-C refractory material was added as flux, slag foaming phenomenon was demonstrated because of the reaction between the graphite from the refractory material and iron oxides in the slag.

Adsorption Characteristics of Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) Ions onto Cation Exchange Resin - Application to the Demineralizing Process in a Primary Coolant System of PWR (양이온교환수지에 대한 Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III), Fe(III) 이온의 흡착 특성 - 원자로 일차 냉각재 계통내 탈염 공정에의 적용)

  • Characteristics of Amberlite IRN 77, a cation exchange resin, and the mechanisms of its adsorption equilibria with Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) ions were investigated for the application of the demineralizing process in the primary coolant system of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The optimum dosage of the resin for removal of the dissolved metal ions at $200mgL^{-1}$ was 0.6 g for 100 mL solution. Most of each metal ion was adsorbed onto the resin in an hour from the start of the reaction. Each metal adsorption onto the resin could be well represented by Langmuir isotherms. However, in the case of Fe(III) adsorption, continuous formation of Fe-oxide or -hydroxide and its subsequent precipitation inhibited the completion of the equilibrium between the metal and the adsorbent Cobalt(II) and Ni(II), which have an equivalent electrovalence, were adsorbed to the resin with a similar adsorption amount when they coexisted in the solution. However, Cr(III) added to the solution competitively replaced Co(II) and Ni(II) which were already adsorbed onto the resin, resulting in desorption of these metals into the solution. The result was likely due to a higher adsorption affinity of Cr(III) than Co(II) and Ni(II). This implies that the interactively competitive adsorption of multi-cations onto the resin should be fully considered for an efficient operation of the demineralizing ion exchange process in the primary coolant system.
