  • 철도(鐵道)의 역사는 레일(rail)의 발달로부터 시작되었다고 한다. 철도(鐵道)는 그 발상지인 영국에서 railway(미국 : railroad, 프랑스 : Chemins do for, 독일 : Eisenbahn, 네덜란드 : Spoorweg, 이탈리아 : Ferrovia, 스페인 : Ferrocarril, 중국 : 鐵路)라고 불려지고 있다. • For railway safety, it is very important to detect damages of rails at their early stage because any undetected damage in a rail can break the rail and cause a serious railway accident. In this paper, several NDT applicable to rail inspections are described. Major damage types in rails are discussed first and the rail inspection technology using conventional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers, which is widely adopted for damage detection of rails, is explained. Other NDT being researched or tested for rail inspection are also discussed as complementary technologies to the concurrent contact type ultrasonic inspection. Characteristics of each rail inspection technologies are evaluated in order to provide requirements for future development of a new rail inspection method.

  • An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. The main contributors to rolling noise are the sleepers, rail, and wheels. In order to analyze and predict rolling noise, it is necessary to understand the vibrating behaviors of railway tracks, as well as of the wheels. In the present paper, theoretical modeling methods for railway track are reviewed in terms of rolling noise; these methods are applied for the three representative types of domestic railway tracks operated: the conventional ballasted track, KTX ballasted track and KTX concrete track. The characteristics of waves propagating along rails are investigated and compared among the types of tracks. The tracks are modeled as discretely supported Timoshenko beams and are compared in terms of the averaged squared amplitude of velocity, which is directly related to the sound radiation from the rails.

  • An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In conventional approaches to predicting rail noise, the rail is regarded as placed in a free space so that the reflection from the ground is not included. However, in order to predict rail noise close to the rail, the effect of the ground should be contained in the analysis. In this study the rail noise reflected from the ground is investigated using the wavenumber domain finite element and boundary element methods. First, two rail models, one using rail attached to the rigid ground and one using rail located above rigid ground, are considered and examined to determine the rigid ground effect in terms of the radiation efficiency. From this analysis, it was found that the two models give considerably different results, so that the distance between the rail and the ground is an important factor. Second, an impedance condition was set for the ground and the effect of the ground impedance on the rail noise was evaluated for the two rail models.

  • Wheel/rail contact is a significant problem in railway dynamics. In this paper, the wheel/rail contact is examined analytically and numerically as a contact problem between two cylinders where torque and friction have effect. Furthermore, the contact of a real wheel and rail is investigated numerically where the normal and shear force act. This study demonstrates that the wheel/rail contact is a process that generates traction force through creep where rolling and sliding occurs simultaneously depending on the shape of the wheel and rail, and the friction coefficient between them.

  • In this paper, rail vibration and its sound radiation are investigated, then the rail noise measurement by using microphone array is explored theoretically. A concrete slab track for domestic high speed trains is modeled as a Timoshenko beam on elastic support, regarding the moving of the excitation force on the rail. From the radiation characteristics of rail noise generated by a line source, the effect of moving load on sound radiation is obtained. Also it is found that the beam angle of the microphone array is a prominent factor to measure the rail noise level reliably because the rail noise propagates as a plane wave. In this investigation, a proper beam angle for the rail noise measurement by microphone array is suggested.

  • With the advent of high-speed railways, railways are one of the most frequently used means of transportation at home and abroad. In addition, in terms of environment, carbon dioxide emissions are lower and energy efficiency is higher than other transportation. As the interest in railways increases, the issue related to railway safety is one of the important concerns. Among them, visual abnormalities occur when various obstacles such as animals and people suddenly appear in front of the railroad. To prevent these accidents, detecting rail tracks is one of the areas that must basically be detected. Images can be collected through cameras installed on railways, and the method of detecting railway rails has a traditional method and a method using deep learning algorithm. The traditional method is difficult to detect accurately due to the various noise around the rail, and using the deep learning algorithm, it can detect accurately, and it combines the two algorithms to detect the exact rail. The proposed algorithm determines the accuracy of railway rail detection based on the data collected.

  • DC feeding system is mainly floating but rail potential and leakage current are due to long parallelism between rails and ground, namely rail resistance and rail to ground conductance. Rail potential causes electric shock to human and rail leakage current causes electrolytic corrosion to nearby the buried metals. Therefore the design technologies to reduce, protect and monitor these effects are important in recent DC feeding system. Rail potential and leakage current are analysed based on propagation theory that is utilized. Monitoring and controlling rail leakage current is proposed in order to maintain rail resistance and rail to ground conductance.

  • The rail surface defects can cause the high impact load on the track and lead to the progress of the rail fatigue damage and the rail break. In case of the rail break, there is a great deal of risk for derailment, and thus the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects are of great importance. In this study, using the dynamic train-track interaction analysis program, the impact wheel loads and rail bending stresses according to the depths of the surface defects have been calculated with the input data of the rail surface irregularities measured at 43 spots with surface defects in the ballasted track of high-speed railway. Considering the irregularity of track geometry, the allowable limits of wheel load and rail bending stress have been set, and the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects was suggested by analyzing the relationship of the maximum values of wheel load and rail bending stress versus depth and width of rail surface defect. The analysis results suggest that the allowable depth of the surface defect is determined approximately 0.2mm from the limit of the impact wheel load.

  • Conventional methods for railway vehicle dynamic analysis have mostly relied on the approximate method based on 2-dimensional contact analysis. Recently, 3-dimensional approaches to achieve an accurate solution for wheel-rail contact analysis have been proposed, but are not practical to apply to actual simulation due to time-consuming processes. The main focus of this study is to present a new method of railway vehicle dynamic analysis by calculating wheel-rail contact forces based on efficient 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis. A 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis and numerical analysis of wheelset dynamic equations will be presented.
